Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters - Elton John

There are so many Elton songs that belong in this thread, but from the moment I first heard it, this remains my favorite. It doesn't explain itself, but even without an exact 'story' behind it, it stands as a paean to the hopeful anywhere.

It represents disillusionment with the big city (NYC) tempered by the comfort we find in the people we love.

Father John Misty can do no wrong in my opinion. An amazing composer, musician, and storyteller.

And the story is no different… the lyrics suck you right in, haunting guitar, pretty minimal, so you’re listening to the lyrics, which hit hard.

Jesus Christ, girl
What are people gonna think?
When I show up to one of several funerals
I've attended for Grandpa this week
With you, with me
But someone's gotta help me dig
Someone's gotta help me dig

I’m not even sure what it’s all about: love, death, life…

But one thing I do know for sure - this is a perfect song.

(I hate the official video of this one, but this is just the music)

He's such a pretentious arsehole.

Writes fucking good songs though.

Speaking of Father John Misty… he made this pretty amazing duet and collaboration with Lana Del Rey.

Damn, it’s a beautiful love song and the lyrics are very evocative. Especially driving around late at night or just being with your lover.

Folky and light. It’s a very beautiful song - hear this perfect song for yourself.

I tried.
I can't resist.

This is something else. Four lads from a crap town in South Wales offering up something truly special. The riff. The lyrics. The...drum machine (sore point for the band's excellent drummer). From a first album which was meant to be their only album, which railed against rave culture and dared people to think and employ critical thought.

Its fucking mint.

I saw a prisonshake and guided by voices... maybe 93 or 94. I was just outta the army the first time. They played one of those stupid exclusive Princeton supper clubs. Somehow me and my first wife got in… my friend was Prisonshake’s roadie and we got on the guest list I guess. I don’t even remember.

What I do remember is that I was so fucking drunk and I had no business driving home that nite.

And that Prisonshake absolutely blew the doors offa GbV. And I love GbV.

There are a few albums that are as great as this album - The Roaring Third. It’s a classic all the way through, and this song kicks it off in style. Stone-sy guitar, great riff, griffins snarling vocals… it was almost like punk rock had gone pure rock.

They showed up Guided by Voices that night (and GbV were really good… it’s just that Prisonshake were great!) I thought I was seeing The Rolling Stones in 1963. What a nite!!

It’s Friday afternoon and time to kick up yer heels…

With You or Without You - U2

I am not a big U2 fan - have zero albums, but they do have their great songs, and this is possibly their best.

Like most great interpersonal songs, it doesn't spell out the difficulty the singer is having with his paramour, it simply cites the pragmatic trouble that couples have - even though there is an inference of cheating.

That, and the expertise with which the song changes and undulates over the same 4 chords is a work of genius.

I took the time to read and listen to the songs in every post in this thread. I'm probably not the person to be posting here. I can't talk about the cords. I can't really talk about any music theory or anything like that.

All I really know is what "I" enjoy listening to depending on my mood. Yes the music I listen to depends on the mood I'm in at the time.

This song by Jim Croce, "Hard Way Every time", I like and I think it's a perfect song. The words tell me he may have had a rough time as he aged, but in the end of it he had to go thru it all and he's okay with it.

Most of the songs I post on the different threads here I wasn't even born when they came out. My friends all say I have an old soul. I love the songs from the late 50s thru the 80s the most. I like classical too, even opera. As I have already stated what I listen to all depends on my mood.

Anyway, here's the song and I like it!

Welcome! You don’t need to know music theory or chords for this thread. You just need to describe why a song is great or perfect to you!

This thread is for music lovers.

Feel free to post some more.

Light Night Mountains All That by Ratboys is a perfect song.

Starts out so unassuming. Slow and acoustic, quite pretty. Then the guitar kicks in. Pretty basic, not two in your face, but has a nice and good sound.

But it’s the chorus or break, I’m not sure which with the bass… that does it for me… there’s something ominous about it.

The song explodes into an orgiastic fury towards the middle…. Then somehow back into another verse and chorus before slow burning into a longish (but not too self indulgent) fade out.

Great and intense vocals, nice lyrics, tight drumming and the bass!!! In my mind a perfect song.

Post-punk perfection!

Ratboys - Light Night Mountains All That

It's cold and snowy here right now. I can't wait till April gets here! This song just sounds so great to me. Makes me think the coming months will bring some summer breezes...I hope it's soon!

Oasis at its best. Great pumping drums before the noisy guitars set in and some great lyrics
are almost screamed at the listener.

I love this song at the moment.
The main backing is a sample, and it works so well. The song is just so sexy, makes me wanna sing and makes me wanna dance

Oklahoma USA - The Kinks

One of my favorites, and most perfect songs from one of my favorite bands. Composer and lead singer Ray Davies had a habit of highlighting the everyday people in British life.

This song shows a woman of lowly means who fantasizes about something better - one of their best songs.

i have a “theory” abt English bands from the 60s.

No disrespect to the Beatles bcz they were the first, the best and probably the most innovative. (Plus I have to admit that in punk rock circles it was popular to not like the Beatles or to discount them as part of the old guard)

But to me The Stones, The Who and The Kinks are the holy trinity of English rock n roll. The stones who really are rockers. The Who who could tell a story like it was no one’s business, and the kinks, who would tell the same stories about everyday people and life.

When I was deployed I. Iraq for desert storm, my friend made me a mix tape (like on a cassette) of all kinds of good music. Mostly punk rock or shoe gaze, but this one was on it.

I’ve heard it on commercials, but it’s a prefect song.

The Kinks are my favorite English band. They were probably the original punks too. Banned from playing in US for a time. Using screwdriver in amp to get tone on You Really Got Me. When I briefly lived in UK did a nice self guided walking tour of all things Kinks. Lots of Pubs around North London. Also saw musical called Sunny Afternoon about them that was fucking brilliant. Sadly it never made it to States as far as I lnow. Even met Matt Damon earlier in day while buying tickets. That was wild.

And its sister song from the same album: People Take Pictures of Each Other

That song is insanely good and so are Ratboys in general. Penny In Lake from that same album is good. Love the guitars on their songs. They seem like they listened to a lot of Midwest Alt-Country. Maybe lots if Uncle Tupelo. Good stuff my man.

The whole village green album is amazing!!

The kinks just out out one amazing album after ankther. Every 10-12 mos.

Same timeframe,

The Who released Tommy and Who’s Next.

The stones put out beggars banquet and Let It Bleed.

I was like a baby then.

A memory song for my bf. He met and became friendly with Aaron Lewis of the band Staind. He did some work for him on a motorcycle Lewis owned. My bf is an amazing guitar player and one time in Boston the band was in a jamb and Lewis called him and asked if he could fill in for a few shows. He did it and didn’t even pee his pants. So this song is for him.

Is there a more perfect, happy and beautiful sounding pop song than “The Blues Are Still Blue?”

I can’t think of too many.

This one takes the cake for me.

Underlying, the catchy music are some fairly depressing lyrics. Mundane Everyday life… doing shit we don’t like (like the laundry). At the end, it reminds us no matter we are, what we’re doing, the blues are still blue.

Whatever it’s really about, my ears find this song really yummy!

Belle and Sebastian - The Blues Are Still Blue

You just reminded me of this. Perhaps my second all time favorite song; Fire and Rain will always be #1 but Alvin Lee’s guitar playing was the best.

The Bluest Blues
