pet peeves and irritations

On boards when a newbie tries to participate and start a thread then in short order someone posts a link to a old thread that more or less is the same subject matter.

Weather intensional or not , that hijacks the newbies thread. If the subject matter has been covered and you don’t feel like posting in the thread why not just pass it by instead of basically posting “ oh yea we already covered that subject long before you came along , so , there’s that.

New Lurkers and newbies join and view threads daily. Why discourage them instead of encouraging fresh views , new posters and new comments other then usual suspects that have covered everything under the sun after being here forever and a day.

New posters are the life blood of any board.

I'm still waiting to read about your experiences on electroplay on that thread. I can see how you view posting a link to a previous thread could come across as saying that topic has already been discussed. I also see it as a contribution of additional information though. I would hope that it is still discussed in the new thread. I personally like hearing ideas and experiences different than my own, from new people and people that have been around a while.

While I agree that new users are the lifeblood of a message board, the reality is that many knowledgeable posters have contributed to this forum for many years and there is a wealth of information here. NOT sharing the existing thread would be a disservice to a new poster.

My post said “ in short order. After a few days or a dozen posts or so I agree with your statement in regards to sharing.

That is the perfect Segway to another pet peeve of mine. Thank U :rose:

Bumping older threads. While I agree that just typing out ...bump .... and not adding a comment on a older thread isn’t participating. But a bumped thread that has a good title like this one as a example , that has been dormant. Why not as a newbie bump it with a comment instead of starting a new one.

If the older , wiser , already been here done that poster has already posted in the thread. Why complain about bumped threads ? Why not contribute a new thought or just pass in by ?

Once again, that is discouraging to new posters , virgin posters and lurkers that read threads old and new that are timid to post because of that sorta marking of territory so to speak. It’s icounter productive. Like putting personals in the wrong sections of the site.

Just a pet peeve of mine nothing more nothing less. That’s the threads theme after all.

Clarification not needed. Telling others when and what they can post is not something that flies here and we disagree (which is okay and certainly not intended to “slight all newbies” or anything like that).

Bumping old threads is against the forum rules, but with little detail and it’s handled differently in different forums. The BDSM forum is a slower moving forum and I don’t consider it disruptive to bump old threads as long as the new post is one of substance. The most common bump of an old thread is someone answering a question posed a dozen years ago by a poster who hasn’t logged on since. This does sometimes lead to deleting the thread or some of the contents if they violate current rules that weren’t in place at that time. I tend to agree that it’s often good to see those old threads and the information within, and I often smile seeing some of the users who haven’t graced this forum in a long time. If the bump is literally the word “bump” or intended to disrupt the forum, it will probably be deleted in every forum.

To answer your question , my experience on that subject matter was the same as Deep Green eyes verbatim as he stated , before he referenced the older thread. I did how ever find the subject matter interesting two fold. The second being that it was a newbie thread. My post was a knee jerk reaction . As I’ve stated in this thread it’s a pet peeve of mine. My bad.

I found this thread and felt it was the perfect spot to explain that. It's also a very good thread idea that is always a good read on boards. Kudos.

I understand. I know this is completely off topic here but the discussion that takes place on this board is what always draws me back. I learn more when I read opposing views and different experiences than when it's something that I already agree with or know about. Differences are what makes things interesting.

Newbies who bump 11 year old threads.

Lately, the spammers have been doing a thing where they'll bump an old thread (though usually months rather than years old) and make some fairly bland reply, and then a few days later they'll go back and edit in a spammy link. Seems to be a tactic to avoid spam-detection filters, I guess edits don't get the same scrutiny as the original post.

Or they'll come in and quote-reply one of the other spam accounts after the link's been added, to give it a bit more exposure.

These days when I see a newbie bumping stuff, especially if the reply seems a little off, I'll go look at what else they've posted. Posts that have been edited a couple of days after their original creation and now have advertising-type links are a giveaway.

I remember one of those where the OP was pregnant and asking for pregnancy tips. Answering twelve years later... no doubt meant well, but probably not going to help her.

Pet peeve .........Segregation in any manner .

It’s like kudzu once it takes root.

Here’s a interesting 🧐 observation. U created the thread , so nothing that U type out is off topic.

Yes U could factor in what the viewer considers “ off topic “ at any given time here in this little white box. Is it a group decision , a individual one , or as simple as not a factor at all. Rules are nothing but guidelines , here in this little white box , U make the rules :D

Don’t forget that , be a Viking

but it might help someone else in a similar situation
just my tuppence

Yes, absolutely this, which is why I typically only delete the bump posts if they are clearly intended to disrupt the forum (thankfully for me and all of us, this only really seems to happen with any frequency on the GB) or spam.

Nothing for nothing , but U could have just agreed with her post. No offense , but it’s a thread about pet peeves.. that’s ok , write ?

To contribute to a active thread,

When you ask someone a question and they ignore it and say something unrelated to keep the conversation moving.

That’s rude , and petty. Unless you’re on ignore. Well then they never saw the question in the first place. Or it’s possible in a active thread 🧵 it got piled on to a next page in like a hour. Maybe just maybe they didn’t see it that way.

Discourteous people. It only takes a second to be human to one another or be a complete fucking asshole.
