Similar but better. You could say that it's just like the difference between reading a book or listening to a book on tape (although I guess these days they're books on disk), but actually the difference is more pronounced, because a recording doesn't interact with you.

When you're talking to someone, you can draw things out more, take your time to tease and tempt; plus you have all the inflections of voice that don't come across in print.
