I think I raved about this book a while ago here on the AH, but Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' is a perfect example of that. There is a main plot, a contemporary fantasy-horror-roadmovie thing, involving many different deities of the multi-religious US.

But there is also a series of interlaced chapters that are stort stories about how different immigrants through the ages have brought different religions, folklore and mythologies with them. They have not much to do with the main story, but they add such depth to the ambience of the book, that I can't imagine how it would read without them.

I don't think I could pull that off in a novel without losing my reader along the way. But then again, I'm not the guy holding the -02 Hugo and Bram Stoker statyettes.
