[poll] forum posting worst practices

what are the worst practices in posting to a forum--either specifically to HT/HT cafe, or more generally?

Sometimes, it sucks when replies to a thread take the original discussion off topic. And sometimes, it's a good thing.

It's a tough call. Being too lazy to punctuate and use caps annoys me. Run-on paragraphs annoy me. But I think trolls are the worst. And whenever I find myself sucked into an argument with a troll, I remember this sign that was posted in the office of a building inspector in whose town I worked frequently:

"Arguing with the inspector is like mud-wrestling a pig. Sooner or later you realize the pig loves it."

bumping the thread because the recent debate over text speak on a discussion forum makes me wonder if some of these worse forum practices could/should be added to the FAQs. either by editing the original "tips on how to get along on HT", or by linking a new post (in which case, yes - i volunteer to write it).

i know there's no guarantee that all newcomers will read it, but the information might be helpful for those who are so inclined.
interesting idea, bail! heh...i'd quite forgotten about this thread!

have you ever attended a networking event when there's a presentation but you're kinda mad cuz you were having a great time chatting with someone you've met for the first time? that's what i hope is happening when a thread goes off-topic. :>

i actually agree re: trolls. i don't care half so much about the actual characters on the screen as i do about what's behind 'em.

People who feel they must declare political warfare on a sex site. It seems the General Board needs to be renamed "Politics Plus."

I don't do well restraining myself from calling people out on their bullshit. Not on here but this asshat at another board, he's so full of it. I'm so sure, someone would have to have lived 2 lifetimes to do all the shit he says he's done and the careers he's claimed to of had. I hate know-it-alls, no matter what the topic, they're the "expert".

It sounds like you ran into my ex boyfriend from early on in graduate school who claimed to be only 21 at the time. However with that claim he also seemed to have a very long string of things he had done that didn't make sense. I'm hard pressed to figure out how someone of such a young age could even physically have worked in a morgue, been drafted by the army (That one makes me laugh since there has been no draft since Vietnam.), Supposedly have also worked for the government, and yet never would get a driver's license because he didn't like the government. That left me scratching my head. The fact he only wanted to be called by his online name and not his real name made me really wonder if he was trying to hide from someone or something. When I finally dumped the bastard he told me if he ever saw me again, he'd kill me. During the relationship he had been verbally abusive as well. Apparently verbal abuse and compulsive lying went hand in hand with this nut.

As for the topic of this thread...
I hate chat speak. HATE it.
I also hate it when people use ALL CAPS. Gah!
