one syllable names suck... and they're often redneck names. earl, merle, wayne, etc. btw, this isn't to say that abbreviated names (like steve for steven) fall into that category.

I believe Ed would fall into a short form for Edward...so is acceptable.

I like made-up names, too, or incredibly uncommon ones. Once I find out someone has a name that I like, it's no longer as special or cool to me.

Anyhow I like unique names, something different. Jane, Julie, Amy are all boring. Give me a woman with a different name any day. Besides being named differently builds character.
