And where is Sassy?

People are gonna start saying we are the same person.

'cause when I am here she is not.

It would be a sara/sassy snuffleupagus sesame street scandal.

Had some problem finding this thread. Buried a bit, unfortunately.

But, hey. New life, y'know. Or old. "Needles and Pins." Song by Jack Nitzsche and former congressman Sonny Bono, of all people.
Great song, though:
  • Perhaps the best version is the first, by Jackie DeShannon. Thank you, Dick Clark.
  • The version I really know is by The Searchers. Only one year later, but I was 11, so I guess that made a difference.
  • Oh, yeah. The Turtles did a version. No, I don't know why.
  • More different was this version by The Ramones. Kind of sedate for them, actually.
  • I've included these guys because, well, they look like me. I'm not left handed, though.
  • Sir Cliff Richard. He's a knight, you know.
  • Willy DeVille's version is either soulful or skanky, depending on how you feel about him.
  • I love this guy's version. Because it's a great garage band song, because he sings only slightly better than I can, because he has "LOVE" on his guitar, because he seems to be tuned slightly flat.
I love YouTube.

AND he lets his 11-year-old daughter experiment on his hair. How adorable is that?

Nice revival, T. Not everyone could pull off a whole set with nothing but a single song.

Here's my rather random set for today.

a very yummy Style Council. I like the piano player - if you didn't know he was playing the piano, you'd think he was having really hot sex.

And Level 42. Very underrated band. I once tried to learn bass guitar just so I could play along with them.

Lest you think I'm thoroughly stuck in the 80's (okay, well, I am, but still), have some Cake. One of the better covers I've ever heard.

Speaking of excellent covers, here's one that's in my top ten covers of all time.

And I've been all on Soul Coughing lately too. I'll dedicate this one to Sri Shankara-ji. Hope he stops by soon...

eat your music, kids. It's no good cold.

Ye gods when Devo started I thought my speakers weren't on so turned them up a notch
*picks bits of brain off the walls*

I can't really get my head around Soul Coughing. It's like half their songs are cool and the other half make me want to grind the CD to flinders. I don't get it.

That is indeed interesting. Which effect does "True Dreams of Wichita" have?

and is this one any better?

Okay so I got exposed to a shitload of new music last night, buncha bands I hadn't heard of, mostly Brit groups and mostly pop but they were all pretty excellent. I'm still exploring, but I'm putting a set together as soon as I get time to listen to more stuff.

On the list (man I felt old that I hadn't heard of ANY of these):

Girls Aloud
Sugababes
The Saturdays (I've heard of the Sundays, so does that count?)
Mark Ronson
N.E.R.D.
Basement Jaxx

Stuff I had heard of but hadn't explored yet:
Lily Allen (frickin LOVE her so far - here's one...) She's so saucy. The kind of Smart Angry Grrrl I find irresistible.
Goldfrapp
John Legend

So. Music people. Who's got the skinny on these bands? I'm wading through the interwebz but I'd love some recommendations.

A lot of the list is unfamiliar, but a few names stand out. I was wondering, is N.E.R.D(S?) the same duo that Pharrell Williams comes from (producers, but they recorded too), or is this a different artist/group?

Lilly Allen....I like her...kind of dark, and bubbly at the same time. Freaky combination, but it works.

I was into John Legend a lot more when he first came out. I haven't been following him as closely these days, though I am in love with Green Light at the moment.

To give you a little background on Mark Ronson, (dj/producer), he has twin sisters that share the limelight with him.....C. (Charlotte) Ronson (fashion designer) and Samantha Ronson who's also a dj (and Lindsay Lohan's gf of the moment.) If you like Amy Winehouse at all, MR has done some cuts for her upcoming album.

It's not bad. Pretty cool.

eh.

I do like this one

Umm, Goldfrapp is about the only one that I have comment on. It can be good. Very good, in fact. Not heard enough to give a consistency review though.

Annie, we know how you are... it's okay...

Tess, nice set!

Okay, been finding some music.

Basement Jaxx. All about censorship. AND it's way poppy and reminds me of Cameo.

While I still haven't had the patience to find out much about them (sorry sexy Sassy) I did listen to some N.E.R.D. Out of courtesy to the more operatic tastes, I've passed up the really hard hip hop cuts, (although "Spazz" was completely kickin and I could definitely, um, dance to it) here's a very fine groovy one that I enjoyed: Yeah You. I could dance to this one too. For sure.

See, it's topical, really, because in my own methods I find that a song I can groove on is also a song I can write to. Last Monday we gathered at the little coffeehouse as usual for a study session, and this mix from which I've gathered all the new band names was playing over the low, amiable crowd noise. My pen was fairly flying over the pages.

Maybe it's a simple case of displacement. If I can't be fucking to a song, I write to it.

And vice versa.

I dig that Basement Jaxx video. Poppy or not, I like it. Liked the video too.

I

But, please God, if there is anything like reincarnation, let me come back as a steel guitar player.

Please?

I can certainly understand that.

I totally dare you to write one of those poem-thingies about that metaphor.

Green light is what got me started on John Legend, at least after I'd seen the sexiness on the Colbert Xmas special.

After watching PUNCH FIGHT FUCK I am a fan.

Loved that. Hilarious!

I mean yeah, III is a big mess. But how can he help it, really?

The ruby slippers are gathering dust in the back of the closet, because I have no desire to be anywhere other than exactly where I am.

Life is damn fine. And you, darlin'. How you been?

Stop by the bistro for a drink sometime. The crowd is still a little sparse, and we're still redecorating (I think someone let a herd of goats in there to roam around while I was gone) but it's all good.

xo

i'm fine and dandy . . . busy -- i am a little fuckin' tired of being busy, but it beats boredom, i suppose. ;)
