LITS #1 Story....

"Daddy," I Whispered: A Critique of the self-proclaimed "Lit's #1 Story"
________________________________________
As a person one fell semester short of a bachelor's degree in English, Creative Writing , and an author  who has won awards for original fiction and poetry outside of Literotica as well as within, I feel that I am as qualified as the next reader to bandy about big words such as "character development" and "misuse of apostrophe." As someone who has been repeatedly, aaaah, dragged into little self-serving faux press-releases after a request that this behavior cease, I feel that I am due a measure of satisfaction since pistols at dawn cannot happen on the Internet.

I  have a long and storied history of critique at Literotica. The story feedback forum is where I shed my dew claws. I owe Literotica and the many writers that offered their stories to me my maturity as an author. Thank you, scouries, for this unknowing opportunity to further my growth as writer. I appreciate your selflessness.

The story I have chosen from scourie's library is the one frequently noted in those infomercial quality press releases as "the #1 Story in Literotica's History," "Daddy," I Whispered?

Oh look, a book cover for a short story

And it's not number one, not even with all the circus hype. It number 13 or so on the favorites list. Why no one knows but it is.

Scouries, you wanted feedback and you got it. Sorry that it didn't fit into your fantasy world. Pull up your big boy panties and go on about your business. It's no ones fault but your own. Self proclaimed greatness always draws the truth from people who believe in such things.

Be careful or someone will post the real and complete review, not the doctored one you posted above.

Heres the link :nana: boy.

km on scouries

I'll believe if you check you'll find the boss quoted km verbatim. Even you, one of the "old ones" and another of the km boy toys, obviously found the words of km the boss quoted offensive. You couldn't believe they were hers!

Unfortunately miss muffin hasn't been able to produce anything of note in years. Sad really...

Grand_High_Poobah is an alt of scouries and is better known as Gabby the Blowup Doll. She's the brains of scouries fantasy world and only comes out when someone lays the truth on scouries. He's busy over in the corner with his fingers in his ears and singing la-la-la-la I can't hear you.

I'm not offended by what he posted. I'm offended that he still thinks it's all a conspiracy. If he spent half the time on his stories that he does on the hype and cheating, he too could win contests and spots in the top 500 story lists. I don't care how many times you say you're number one, it don't make it so. The real readers say it's so. Fake votes, comments and view, mean nothing.

la-la-la-la I can't hear you.

No but I try not to miss a chance to pop his over inflated balloon or is that blowup doll. Neither actually, it's his over inflated ego.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with "alright" vs. "all right". I do, however, butt heads with my editor on "dammit" because she insists it's "damnit" and I insist it's "dammit." Oddly, I have spell check activated in my browser (Firefox) and it picks up damnit as misspelled. MS Word also picks it up as a misspelled word. When I point that out to her she usually lets it go.

One word I do see on occasion (<=== I never spell that one right the first time) is irregardless. It doesn't come up as a misspelled word, but it is not, in fact, a word. (Threw that phrase in there for you, Dark. :))

I use this page a lot (<== another that gets abused and misused) when writing AND editing:

http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html (irregardless is there, too.)

Take the 'it' off and the word is 'damn' . Your editor is quite right.

'irregardless' is 'regardless'. Now go play with 'flammable', 'inflammable', and 'non-flammable'.

Elfin, many words begin life spelled one way, only to see the spelling changed once the tense is changed or some other component is added.

Adding "it" to an existing word doesn't necessarily make the new work correct.

"Damnit" is no more correct or incorrect than "dammit." They're both incorrect, as neither word formally exists, but between the two "damnit" is the more awkward choice.

I'll go with "dammit" every time, and any editor worth his or her salt won't have a problem with it. They're not going to insist on some other incorrect spelling. Either the word itself gets tossed, or the spelling is subjective.

It's pretty much irrelevant that there's an "it" at the end of the root word "damn" in this example. We're talking slang/colloquial contraction here. There's a "not" at the end of "don't" too, but no one renders the slang/colloquial contraction of this as "donot."

These renderings develop over time and creep into the relavent authorities eventually. A good authority for slang/colloquialisms is the Urban Dictionary, which renders the term "dammit." Under the other term, it has the words separated "damn it."

So, go with either. But there are more readers who won't question "dammit" than there are who won't question "damnit," I'll wager--and, as an editor, unless it was rendered consistently as a speech pattern of a specific character, I will suggest going with "dammit" as being less obtrusive to the general readership.
