Santa Claus and his ilk

I didn't read through everything, but here is a point to consider.

Has your So ever planned something, or cooked something, and spent a huge amount of time and concentration on something for you....and it turned out horribley or didn't taste good....etc. But you told them it was excellent anyways?

Technically that is a lie. But I don't see the harm in it. I think it would cause more harm to tell the truth in a situation like that.

Same could be said about Santa. Kids are Kids. They live in an almost imaginary playworld. Its fun for them, and provides a way for them to connect with other kids.

I tend to think that reality is truly in the eye of the beholder. To a child, Santa Claus is real. Every year at xmas, the child wanders in to where the xmas tree is and sees tons more presents than were there before and has no idea where they came from. I dont see any harm in letting the child believe that there is such a thing. Although this whole scheme could technically be considered lying to the children about it, is the child then considered lying about their existence for asking about what Santa is going to bring them this year?

No, they are not lying the are simply allowing the kids to enjoy the "magic" of the holidays and childhood.

I seriously doubt any child will thank you for taking that away from them with "honesty." I know I sure as hell didn't!

as a parent, i would think that it's incumbent upon you to tell kids truths that they're ready to handle. anybody else hear "honey, the dog went out to the country to live" or "the dog got loose and ran away"?
We had a cat who, as far as my hubby and I know, "went away." When my oldest daughter told her dad (my ex) about it, he thought that the cat had died and that we'd just told the kids that she went away. That wasn't the case, though. We were, however, honest to the kids about what happened when one of our cats had a litter of kittens and two of them died.

Please don't think that I'm losing sleep over this. My kids believe in Santa and I don't regret that. I was just throwing the topic out for discussion. Gotta get in the holiday spirit and all that. ;)

When one finds one's dog in the woods with a bullet in it's head you know it didn't just "go away." Parents should be careful in that area.

Learning to deal with loss, including pets, honestly is one of the most important life lessons a child when old enough to understand finality, can have.

It should come as no surprise that the pastor asked her not to return to his church. Not because of that incident alone, but because she was fond of questioning/disagreeing with him.

Perhaps the "pastor" should choose another line of work, perhaps commandant of some prison camp.

Tell Gram I said hello and Merry X-Mas. :)

Fairy tales, they are a beautiful thing. It's not lying, it's a fairy tale. The key is how do you break it to your kids that there is not Santa? I still remember thinking how wonderful my parents were that they were the ones who were going otu and getting al these great gifts for me because htey loved me, and how they made it fun for me by telling me it was Santa. I certainly didn't feel lied to.

You let them feel oh so smart that they figured it out for themselves!

Kids love that, I've figured it out feeling, they just glow with it!

I wonder if I actually suck it up and have my wisdom teeth out if the Tooth Fairy will leave a new Ipod under my pillow.
