Setting the Record Straight or another music thread by J

You should try living in my shoes.

I'm a Brit that thinks The Beatles were just, at best, an average band that got a REALLY good PR guy.

It depends on how you see the Beatles. I used to think the same, that as a band playing pop songs they were just average, especially the earlier stuff when there were dozens of similar bands doing similar things. What changed it for me was seeing a programme about the musical theory behind their songs. They're actually really complex and drew from a huge range of influences far beyond what their contempories were doing at the time.

Fair enough, Sergeant Pepper probably is overrated but compare Tomorrow Never Knows to anything of its time and they were on a different planet.

Here's the documentary that someone's helpfully loaded onto youtube - it's really good and Howard Goodall is ace! Check it out.

Here's the thing, I'm not a huge Nickleback fan. That said, I think there's something to be said about their music; they have mass appeal (not here evidently) and several songs that became extremely popular.

Is that the issue? The popularity? Are we shunning the sheeple's music?

I just took a little more crap from a friend here about the whole issue. Seeing as how I do not own any of their songs, I had to YouTube search for them. (Notice how I don't possess any of their music, you judgy folks). And, yeah, I like their songs, some of them quite a lot. Have I gone to a concert? Nope. (Although while conducting my mini-research on them I learned they opened for Bon Jovi once - I'd have gone to that).

In another conversation with this same friend, I noticed that he is of the one favorite song variety and that favorite song never changes. I, on the other hand, like a wide variety of music and my favorite song changes frequently (maybe this musical mindset allows me to like what you all loathe).

So, I am curious. Not about your lack of love for Nickelback, but about your favorite songs. Specifically, are you fiercely loyal to one or a few favorites or would you be hard pressed to even name a favorite? What do you think this says about your personality?

I pretty much listen to everything except hip hop. I'd listen to that if somebody could recommend something that was good.

I love a wide range of music, as long as it's an actual tune. My faves include Indigo Girls, specially the earlier albums where it was more just them and guitars, harmonizing. Great Big Sea, because you can't listen to them and not be happy. Jonny Lang has a great old-school type bluesy sound and he's an awesome guitar player. And the list goes on, and on, and on......

My tastes are very broad. However, my favorite songs have been with me a very long time. They say that your musical tastes are fixed in your brain when you are in your teens and early twenties, and for me that's mostly true.

My favorite songs:

1. Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
2. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
3. Atomic Dog - George Clinton
4. Rock n Roll - Led Zeppelin
5. Everlong - Foo Fighters

Beyond that they fluctuate wildly on a daily basis

Being who I am and how old I am, my favorites are many and I guess diverse in nature.

First let me say, I grew up with the Beach Boys, Dave Clark Five and of course the Beatles. Are any of my favorites by them? No, although they all have good songs that I liked one time or another.

Current #1 Song, the one I always click on to play when I open media player...

For some reason it's December by Collective Soul.

#2 - Layla by Eric Clapton ( the mellow version, not the heavy metal version )

#3 - Crazy Train by Ozzy Osborne

#4 - Our House in the Middle of the Street by The Talking Heads

and finally...

#5 - Jenny Take a Ride with Me by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels

Eclectic for sure and some change without notice on a whim. :D

Enjoy.
