Sia's Cozy Abode

I may not have gotten the sleep I had hoped for yesterday morning, but I did have an idea for a story I think I might like to write at some point. This is a rambling of my thoughts.

The setting is a Masquerade Ball. This story could take place in the past or modern day I can see benefits for using either time setting.

This ball is held by an exclusive group of people possibly rich, noble or a secret society. At the masquerade masks are required and the strict rule is they are worn at all times and real names are not exchanged. The idea is that people can relax and play a persona during the evening without fear of being identified, as many of the patrons are respected public figures. What happens between couples who spend the evening together is entirely up to them.

The character I would like to write is at the masquerade for the very first time. She excited to have garnered an invitation because stepping into this world can open opportunities in the real world. On this evening she meets and spends time with a gentleman, who is either young and new to the world or older and experienced. These two have a strong chemistry and spend the entire evening together talking and exploring the grounds of the mansion and end up in the garden to watch the sunrise marking the end of the festivities. They part ways and anticipate seeing each other in two weeks at the next ball.

This story can develop many different ways and can be a sweet romance or something a little darker either way the characters will be drawn to each other passionately and find ways to break the rules by communicating between functions. Each time they meet at the ball they wear a specific item such as a type of flower in her hair and trinket of some kind pinned to his lapel or he chooses a specific type of mask, so that they can recognize each other.

Eventually they will reveal who they are in the real world and this can create other problems. The pace in which they move romantically depends on the characters who may or may not show restraint. The male character can be close to my character's age, which I'm seeing is mid-twenties or he can be older. Perhaps the male character is one of the hierarchy and draws her into his world while slowly breaking the rules he helped put in place. Her initial invitation possibly could be part of his plan to draw her into his world and possess her. If that is the case then he would start out looking for the conquest, but finds himself falling in love with her.

If this takes place in the past I see it as the nobles using this as a way to cure boredom and game play with those not within their social hierarchy. If this takes place in the modern world I think it works as an underground society, which is comprised of successful people in business, celebrities and a few independently wealthy.

My brain is a little tired, so I'm not sure I'm explaining this idea very well, so I'll come back and edit, but this is the gist of my brewing idea.

Hello sadness and self loathing it's been a while. Why don't you stay on your side of the emotional line and I'll stay on mine. Thanks and have a good day.

Sometimes a little peace and solitude is what one needs. Having taken a short trip away to visit family she's now home. She holds a tumbler of ice water in her hand with a notebook tucked into the crook of her arm. Reaching for the handle she opens the sliding glass door taking a step forward, bare feet coming in contact with the cool wood of the deck. Closing the door behind she continues across the deck to the bed that sits at the edge of the pool.

The air is cool, partial clouds filter the sun as it begins its descent to end another day. Dusk is one of her favorite times because evening soon follows she always as enjoyed the night. Setting the tumbler on the raised deck where the bed sits, she tosses the notebook to the middle of the bed then climbs onto the soft mattress positioning herself against the pillows and making herself comfortable.

Reaching for the notebook she opens to a page marked by a satin ribbon and pulls the pen free from the spirals. Bending her knees she uses her thighs for leverage and stares at the words she's already written, it needed a few corrections, perhaps some additions. Chewing on the edge of her pen she begins to think, daze off a little as she places herself back into the mind of the character.

*runs up the stone path with her pillow in hand then pauses at the steps leading up to the deck and looks around.*

*creeps up silently, swinging pillow around to strike her right on the bottom*

*screams out of surprise as the pillow smacks her from behind. Muttering under her breath she spins around on her heel swinging the pillow full force not aiming for anything but hoping to hit his body. Then scampers away jumping the stairs to the deck and away from the pool.*

*smirks at the surprised yelp, almost able to dodge the incoming attack, instead taking a glancing blow across the shoulder. Follows her stride, taking stairs two at a time to get up onto the deck. The pool...now that might cause some trouble all it's own*

*a smile beams as she turns to face him finding he's not far behind. Bouncing on the balls of her feet she looks past him to the pool and thinks she won't go in alone. Gripping the pillow tight she takes a few steps forward and swings the pillow around to give him good smack at his middle. *

*He knows what'll happen if he doesn't dodge, but has very little room to maneuver. so he decides to do something else entirely. One hand on his own pillow, the other reaches up and snags hers on its collision course. He tugs it toward himself, turning with his momentum to put her off balance. And on course for the pool; his triumphant grin is wide, but possibly premature*

*The smile quickly melts as he grabs the assaulting pillow and shifts his weight to set her off balance. The momentum of the swing coupled with mid-step has her eyes wide because there lies the pool and she struggling with her footing so close to the edge.* Damn it!

*She half giggles and then in a quick decision she holds tight onto pillow and pulls forward trying to give herself enough stability to regain balance. Both feet land dangerously close to the edge of the pool, but manages to stay dry. For now.*

*his grin falters as he feels her grip tighten on her pillow. She yanks, nearly toppling his own balance, but he manages to catch himself. Standing directly in from of her. His grin goes sheepish, cheeks turning the slightest red*

Oh damn...guess we're both lucky to be dry.

*There was a split second she thought they might both topple into the pool though now both sure footed they stand inches from each other, she grins up at him with a glint of mischief in her eyes.* Yeah....close call.

*Tightening her fingers into the pillow she tugs followed by an elbow playfully tapping his side.* Now give me back my pillow this fight isn't over.*

*The playful jab and tug draw a smirk from him. He releases her pillow, swinging his at the same time, dinging her right in the arm holding her pillow. That gives him a chance to spring back, getting as much distance between himself and the pool as possible. He's not sure if the door is open or not, so he stands with his back to it.*

Right you are....

*his grin is back in full force*

Oh now you're going to get it!

*The cheap shot he'd taken when he released his hold on her pillow only served to rile her up. Fluffing her pillow she watches up back up to the closed sliding glass door. Two steps forward and to the side she watches up, both hands tight on the pillow she glances down at the lounge chair only a foot away and the little throw pillow sitting on the seat. Hmm... turning her head she looks behind her to bed at the foot of the pool where a few other pillows lay. A quick sprint to the side she reaches for the small throw pillow, grabbing it and tossing it at him as a distraction. Quick steps forward she swings her pillow full force down aiming for his hip.*

*She looks like she's sizing him up...deciding something...it's almost too quick to catch, but he sees her push off, snagging another pillow and tossing it at him. Instinct brings his own up to block, better judgment keeping his feet planted. Her hit lands solidly, throwing his balance for just a moment. His pillow turns and wallops hers, knocking it up and over her shoulder so he can land another swing to her stomach, right on her waistline*

This is fun. I'm glad you thought of it.

*She laughs as her plan works and her pillow comes in contact with his hip, a victory smile as she sees him stumble. A short lived victory. He quickly regroups swinging back swiftly the pillow connecting with her middle, knocking her back and couple of steps and forcing a rush of air from her lungs. Clearing her throat she grins and nods.*

Isn't it? I love a good pillow fight!

*Yelling a battle cry she skips forward a step holding the pillow high, but instead of merely swinging she pivots, turning a full circle and brings the force of the pillow to his shoulder.*

*Just as he thinks there'll be a lull in the fighting, she surprises him again with a swat to the shoulder. He bends with the blow, spinning around full-circle and smacking his pillow into her butt again, hoping to knock her balance off again*

*Her swat is met with another from him to her ass the force making her stumble forward several steps, she near toppled to the wood deck, but managed to catch herself. Laughing softly she shakes her head and straightens up to face him.*

We could go at this for hours and I don't think one of would win unless we started playing dirty.

You know, I think you're right. Then again, I don't recall agreeing to play fair!

*Springs forward, snatching her pillow from a momentarily loose grasp, leaping back to put himself against the door, wielding both pillows like nunchaku. His childish grin only serves to reinforce the fun he's having*

*This is not what she was expecting, she stares dumbfounded, first at her empty hands and then at him with both pillows. The shock wears off quickly and she laughs softly. *

Good thing I have backup!

*Turning around she runs to the bed jumping up on raised deck and reaching for a king sized pillow with both hands wielding it with confidence as she turns around and hops down. Not liking how close to the pool she stands her feet sprint towards the back of the deck before coming at him with a good swing at the pillow grasped in his left hand.*
