Space for Whatchamacallits

I like this:

"It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story. I've got it now. You meet a girl: shy, unassuming. If you tell her she's beautiful, she'll think you're sweet but she won't believe you. She knows that beauty lies in your beholding. And sometimes that's enough. But you show her a better way. You show her she is beautiful. You make mirrors of your eyes, prayers of your hands against her body. It is hard, very hard, but when she truly believes you... Suddenly the story she tells herself in her own head changes. She transforms. She isn't seen as beautiful. She is beautiful, seen." - Bast. ("The Name Of The Wind")

That is a lovely quotation, Ms. Serpentine. Thank you for sharing it.

May I just say that this virtual space you have created is an absolute oasis of decency, good manners, intelligence and charm. It is a privilege to be a small part of it: thank you.

On the subject of beautiful words, this I think is a lovely poem - particularly the second verse [wtf is the difference between a verse and a stanza anyway? anyone?]

**************

If I could write words like leaves on a forest floor,
What a bonfire my letters would make!

If I could speak words of water,
You would drown when I say "I love you."

**************

Anyone want to guess the author without googling?

I fully agree. :)

Lovely indeed: I did just Google it, and I would never have guessed. And as far as I know, a stanza is the more formal word - certainly it's what teachers encourage students to use. For me, verse also carries a more traditional connotation: perhaps rhyme or a clearly marked rhythm, certainly an even number of lines. A stanza may be free-form; I'm not sure a verse can be. But that's just my two penn'orth.

An excellent idea, Ms Britwitch: I, too, bring simple English flowers for our hostess.

Thanks everybody for all the kind words and pretty flowers. It just goes to show that the simple things in life are the things that really make you appreciate what kindness is, even kindness from people you met online.

I just wanted to make somewhere where I could post random stuff from my brain, and where everybody was made welcome. I've only been in a couple of social threads in the Lounge, one where I didn't really fit in and was kind of chased ... chuckles ... And the Lounge thread, that Brit introduced me to. I didn't want to spam it with weird pictures and poems and the rumblings of my head, so I made this. I guess I just wanted somewhere that I could be me without feeling I had to compromise my personality.

But really, this thread wouldn't be nearly half as good without all you guys. I'm so thankful you all popped in. It's so nice when, even on a site like this, you meet genuine people.

So thanks.

... dude, c'mere.

I haven't been on here that long, and not gonna lie, really was quite intimidated at first. But ever since stumbling onto these peculiar threads, and meeting all you peculiar, wonderful people, having conversations about knitting, writing, music and food, I feel so much more at ease <3

Anyway, hope you're all having a great day so far! I'm getting out the ice-cream again, hooray!

Apropos of sweet Fanny Adams

I'd like to direct your attention to the work of this lady. My guess is she's no longer posting, which if true is rather a loss :(

I think this is my favourite so I'll put it here as bait. I'd say that I hope you like it, but I can't imagine anyone not doing.

Anyway - for your reading pleasure...

Today I held my lover's hand
Whilst walking through the market square:
A public act, not sought nor planned,
But simply done to show I care.

The Earth, it seems, kept spinning round,
No lightning struck us from above;
An old man smiled, another frowned,
To see two women clasped by love.

I could have briefed the local press
Or published in the 'Lost and Found'
But who reads tales of happiness
When war and hate and grief abound?

Instead, I held my lover's hand
Because I could no more resist
And, later by the taxi stand,
We thanked the world's neglect, and kissed.

Lovely, Mr Fegg: simple and affecting.

I have always loved this love song since first hearing it on my parents' record player.

"Kathy's Song"

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls.

And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day.

And as a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I.

Hello!

At the behest of a very wonderful woman who should be absolutely beaming here shortly, I have poked my head in to say hello.

It's been a while since I've been active on any thread for just about any forum in a meaningful way, but since it means so much to a special person very near and dear to my heart, I'm going to try and be a bit more active here for her. I'm honored to be able to collaborate with her on some stories we may work up the courage to post, I know how much writing means to her and I'm told I'm not too shabby myself. I'm looking forward to using that to hopefully bridge our 3,900ish mile divide, and hopefully we'll get some wicked enjoyment out of it as well.

I'm sure I'll get to know you all soon enough, as I know how this wonderful woman has a way of pulling people into her life like no display of nature can match.

So to all a cheery greetings, irrespective of local time zone, and may you all have a wonderful day/night :)

Mr TechnoGeek, you are a very lucky and, I am sure, very worthy man. It is hardly for me to welcome you here, as a guest myself, but do let me introduce you to the drinks cabinet, the fireplace and the comfortable chairs.

Thank you :)

I do appreciate it and your are correct, I think I am the luckiest man on earth. I know that is my own inward opinion and this is the outside world, so forgive me for my blissful ignorance, but yes. I am very lucky to have a woman like her.

On a less piney note, I would enjoy a drink and a seat in this wonderful place of her creation.

-collects a tumbler glass and pours a very modest drink of some fine Irish whiskey and claims an empty chair, collecting himself in this new environment.-

Welcome!

You two are just absolutely adorable :cathappy:

She has created a splendid place here. Be warned: keep the sweeties away from me. Nice to meet you! -wave-

Thank you. We do try our very best to be that sickeningly in-love couple everyone despises. I've taken the liberty of perusing the thread thus far, and I am well aware you are not to be trusted with sweets. -waves from his chair with a soft smile-

Ms. Starry-Eyed! Come and sit with me in Gooseberry Corner, and admire the lovestruck look in Mr TechnoGeek's eyes.

Isn't it wonderful when romance is in the air :)

When I'm around two people so obviously deeply in love, I find it hard not to think of lines like "I often think of pale, perfect faces..."

So - here's to lovers everywhere :) *raises glass*

Edit - I fear that link may be broken - this one is another of my favourite romantic ballads

Bert, you're going to kill me with curiosity at what the link was to, and I so desperately wish Miss Serpentine would sit on my face, preferably with open toed heels and nice Lacey stockings ;)

Ahem.

I raise an eyebrow and narrow my eyes playfully at TG

Like I haven't heard that request before...

I go back to floating deliriously around the rafters, singing snippets of Art Garfunkel songs

I figured if I keep hinting, I might get lucky.

-pulls her down from her flight and parks her in his lap, humming along with her singing quite happily-

Romance wins out - The link is fixed :)

I had to google what bukkake was.

I can't say I'd call that romance. Possibly the utter sexual degradation of a member of the female gender.

But definitely not romance.

goes back to her favourite place, her gentleman's lap
