Stories I Suspect Have Been 1 Bombed

Here is a link to a post by Carlus Magnus on how to calculate your minimum number of each star rating you receive.

It does not take a lot of math skills to do the calculations. If you bother to read and use it please read his example below the calculation part. It clears up some possible questions.

I also saw a comment from anonymous that said something like: I gave it a 2, my friends and I know about the sweeps and vote 2s. We are learning.

I also saw one anonymous comment saying he gave the story a 1. A little further down a reader who is also an author said she liked the story. First guy said he went back and gave all of her stories a !.

Sometime you just can't escape some of those bastards. One of the reasons I turned off the voting on my few stories despite 2 of the 3 having reasonable scores. The other reason is so damn few people vote. Fuck 'em if they are too damn lazy to take 5 seconds to vote, like it or hate it, let then take the extra time to write a comment.

My stories generally get several 1s early in the game, and usually within a short span of time; so I assume the one-bomber uses many alts to do the damage. And from that fact I assume that plenty of authors figgered out that they can unleash a cluster of 5s on their own stories, too.

I mean, readers pay attention to the score, and a high score draws more readers than a low score. So it makes sense to pad your own scores, and fuck your buddy.

Yesterday I read an article about this sort of thing. It was on the financial page. Folks know that brains and hard work count for shit in the office and factory, they know its easier to fuck over people than it is to increase skills and productivity. All skill and hard work do is make your assclown boss nervous.

Factoring the distribution of stars also lets you know what aint there, and where the boundaries are. Its often enough for Babe Ruth to point to center field without identifying the exact seat number where his fly ball is gonna land.

"If you mean, how do they post right from the start with an H? A reasonable author following who show up and vote early ( usually 5s )"

Yes, that is what i mean. For example, there is a H story right now with an author's second submission. Do established authors get bombed more often?

Do established authors get bombed more often?

I would imagine so, if you go on a definition of the 1 bomb being more about the author than the story. A new author hasn't had time to build up many grudge "friends." The 1 bombing on them would have more to do with the themes they pick that some voters knee jerk 1 vote or something like their sexual orientation (more "just because" 1 bombing of GMs possibly, although I've seen only a little of this).

I also saw a comment from anonymous that said something like: I gave it a 2, my friends and I know about the sweeps and vote 2s. We are learning.

The score has nothing to do with a sweep. Cache clearing just lets you vote again, and each vote is accompanied by the IP number it came from. The sweep just looks for multiple votes from the same IP and removes all but the first one.

So 2 bombing, or 5 bombing doesn't work either.

If you suspect you've been 1 bombed, you can request a sweep of your story. Just go to the story and hit the "Report" link at the bottom. Ask for a vote sweep, and it will get swept.

It just gets tiring when some dirt bag does it every week, regardless of getting them swept out. Eventually I gave up and turned off voting.

And their teachers are the threads themselves, like this one, that keep discussing the 1-bomb.

The contests threads are full of laments about bombing and trolling and too many authors have unthinkingly said, "When will they learn, a 2 has a better chance of sticking than a one"

What I don't understand is why can't the system simply block more than one vote from an ISP? They do it with comments. Example.

I always comment as anonymous to avoid any "retribution" to my own stories by an author or their sick fan base. I made a comment on a story and the author replied to my comment in the public comments, and made a very valid point.

I tried to comment again to thank him for clearing it up, but I received a message that I had already left an anonymous comment, if I wanted to comment again I would have to sign in.

Also I voted on a story before, then a couple of days reread it. I think I forgot if I voted or not and tried again and it would not let me, it said I had already voted, which was when I noticed the 4th star was already filled in.

So if their system is capable of that, why can't they simply limit each IP address to one vote? You can create a dozen handles, but they will all be "wrapped" in the same information and be recognized. I know it can be done and it would certainly go a long way towards cleaning up the contests.

I feel there are two answers, one, they could care less, which is the general attitude that seems prevalent here over the last couple of years in many facets of the site.

The other? There would be no one here to blame when strange things happen in the contest placings.

But, yes, there are computer programs that can get circumvent that, but its not everyday software and I am certain at least two individuals here have that capability, but only one is considered "evil".

What category is it in? If it's in one of the low vote categories such as I mentioned earlier, even a new author can debut with an H if they have a catchy enough title and tagline to entice people to open it. They only need 10 votes that average 4.5.

Laurel ( at least the last time I looked ) tends to have some stories that approve at midnight ( such as pre-approved stories ) and then manually approves more later in the morning. Every time she updates the New list, it appears to calculate whether the stories listed should display an H.

So, if someone has a story post in that first batch, and it picks up at least 10 votes with a good average, as soon as she puts up the next batch, the list display updates, and they have an H.

Which can be a blessing or a curse. The H will get more people to read it, but it will also attract people who may not like it ( dragging the score down ) or people who will bomb it ( dragging the score down )

Stories in high-vote categories have a tougher time, because even though there's a relatively small number of people outside the "vote high or not at all" category, the more votes there are total, the more of those people there are.

Many of the high-vote categories also have moral monitors who will downvote stories. Incest and LW especially. That hurts the chance of debuting with an H, and increases the chance your score will plunge if you get one.

Is the story long? Over 3 Lit pages? The longer a story or chapter is, the more likely it is that people will back-click without reaching the voting form. Those who do probably enjoyed the story, and probably vote high.

Is it a second chapter? Again, the people who didn't like chapter 1 don't come back for Chapter 2. The votes that remain are going to skew higher.

There's all sorts of factors involved that could allow a relative newcomer to debut with an H.

I think what was being noted was that there are stories that post in the first, midnight, list that have red Hs beside them already. Which is true. I think it was explained at one time that the New list doesn't hit everyone's server at the same time (and even on the same server, there must be variations. The New list hits in my desk computer before it does in my laptop. I have no idea why that happens.) I've found also that stories can hit the category page New lists before the general New list. And an explanation was also ventured that they come up on some of the other platforms earlier.

But it is true that the first listing can come up with stories having red Hs. I'm often checking for that first list to appear.

The very first place a story will appear is on your individual public author pages. That's why I suggested established authors have the best chance of debuting with an H on the New List.

If you have a following of even 10 people who love everything you write, and who watch your list like a hawk ( or you email them alerts when stories post ), it's easy enough to have 10 high votes before any other page in the system updates.

EDIT: Although, I haven't looked into this lately, and they've been doing some strange cache things the last couple of years. It could have changed.

My stories frequently appear first on my private submissions list, second on the category page New list, third on the New list, and only later on my individual public page. The posting to my individual public page lagged so far behind on two occasions in the past month that I almost PMed to Laurel as a possible posting mistake.

Ditto. Found the same thing happening to me. One story I couldn't find anywhere recently, but it was in the feedback portal. Showed up in category new, new, then my page hours later.

Guess it has changed, then.

There are some things about the way Lit serves public content now that are baffling to me, and this is one of them. It still falls true for author-watching hawks being able to boost that favorite author up to 10 votes before it hits the New list, though. If it appears anywhere else first, they can find it, read, and vote.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned, at least I don't think it has. You're score doesn't show anywhere but your authors page until you get 10 votes.

A lot of the time I will have a score of 4.9x or 5 at 10 votes and then the next two or three votes will drop the score to the 4.6 or 4.7 range, sometimes even lower, so someone is watching closely.

It displays on the category portals regardless of how many votes you have.

I am trying to see how my drawing attention to the issue will affect my scores. The third chapter of a story of mine posted today. This morning it was at around a 3.75 but five hours later it is above a 4.0.

I don't see where there will be any cause and effect, and if there is, I think it will make your scores go down. Malicious voters love to be recognized, I think.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I wanted to see what the effect is.

It still looks good to me

I have a moderate comments tab. How I wish I had one of those back at XN. Trolls stalked the place and I just gave up after one made comments, hairy dirt fag etc on a succession of my stories all aimed at me.

The theory there is harden up. Well I left instead. There is no power to moderate the threads and it's nearly impossible to get comments removed.

And as for dive bombing well it' s an art form there. I know it's not perfect here but at least you can have the votes swept and delete unpleasant comments so its a whole lot better than I've experienced and to top it off it's chock full of people who actually know what they're talking about.

Oh yes, and the stories are so much better than XN.

One over there, it was short thank goodness, had the title 'having sex wail daugher asleep in same room' ( I cut and pasted that, in case you think there might be a few typos from me).

Yeah, glad to be here.

I think XN stories are better than LIT stories. The really good stories aren't at LIT.
