"Subbies"

This is TOTALLY my fault.

I started a thread with "subbie" in the title. I was uninformed as to the standards of the culture. I was very kindly (not in a usual board-manner: "fuck off, ass") shown a website that un-fucks the nonbdsm-er about a lot of stuff.

I went from mild amusement to "Wow, these people are not only serious, it make SHIT-LOADS of sense to me"

Learned alot
hope I didn't tweak too many noses.

Heh. Excellent.

Yeah, you annoyed me a little bit. I WTF'd your thread everytime I saw it, but I'm glad to see you're starting to understand things a little better.

The English language just misses a feature for making words small and cute... Like in German you can add a "chen" or "lein" to the nouns and get a perfectly reasonable nickname out of (almost) everything. Same goes for Italian, though -of course- different endings ("ino/a") are used.
These will sound patronizing, though, when used by someone who one doesn't know or who is making an ass out of his/herself. A bit like making a grown-up into a little kid again. I don't mind any of these endings if used for fun and playing.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame yourself, Gekken....this thread was started a long, long time ago. :)

And by and large most of us here are happy to educate newcomers. There are a few trolls and grumps among us, of course, and everybody has a bad day now and then, but the majority of us are glad to teach about our lifestyle, which we do indeed take seriously. Of course it's sometimes simply easier to point someone to another reference page if they have a LOT of questions, but we're pretty good about answering followups. :)

My reaction to the word "subbie" being directed toward me revolves around who is saying it and how they are saying it and what they mean to convey in the word.

In my life, most of the time it's been used toward me, it's been a term of easy affection and light almost-teasing. In that context, i don't mind it at all. Why would i?

One cannot be insulted and/or belittled by mere words if they don't allow it, can one?
:rose:

It is only an insult or a degrogatory term, if you allow the word to have power over you ... By not giving the word the "power" it isnt a derogatory or harmfull word.
