First, my comment was directed to the person replying to your own posting, attempting to transform your personal decision and your very particular institutional context into a universal normative maxim.

Second, you situation was a radically different context than the majority of people on here who are teachers. Those in secondary/high schools compared to those of us in colleges and universities are also quite different. the military has its own modes of training and indoctrinating cadets into being working parts of the institution - nothing even comparable to the university context.

There are a lot of situations where relationships between superiors and subordinates even I would consider to be highly unethical - but there are many where the flirtatious play, if not outright sexual relationship, between different people can be, and should be, more open. Yes, there are possibilities for exploitation - but exploitation is possible in any and all relationships, regardless of where they transpire. Exploitation is wrong, open sex between consenting adults shouldn't be an issue, for anyone...

And we know the relationships between authority figures and subordinates are fully consenting and non-exploitive on both sides how? How do others in the organization know that?

If a boss starts "flirting" and making sexual advances towards a subordinate, should the subordinate assume that there's no exploitation involved and that there will be no consequences for them whether they accede to the approach or not?

If the boss is having a sexual relationship with a subordinate, and the subordinate gets a promotion, or some other benefit, should everyone else in the organization assume that it unrelated to their relationship? On the flip side, should the relationship preclude the subordinate getting a promotion because of the possibility of favoritism?

In theory what you say is true. In the real world it really is far, far messier.

I fully agree. Though am always baffled by people on Lit who come on to threads they themselves have no interest in to judge and moralize others. To each their own...

I had this happen before. I grew up in a small town in Texas and in high school had a crush on my theater arts teacher. I was actually a lousy student in the class and hated the whole drama class! I forgot about her and in my mid 20s I was playing in a rock band out of Austin. Turns out this teacher was a musician and we had a couple of gigs together. As a teacher I can tell you only about a couple of wild dreams I had about female students but you don't dare to do anything of that sort in real life. There are colleagues who ended up in court for these things so it quickly ruins your ENTIRE life.

With former students, things would be different. I know of some who married their teacher, but that might be less hot .
