The 2023 Geek Pride Story Event: Official Support Page

Not seen a single one of those. I guess that’s my problem.

Just think, the whole twentieth century exists, for your delectation.

For example, the first movie based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was made in 1905. But I can't recall who made it. It'll be in one of my movie buff books. I've got about a hundred of those, with about twenty or so on Stanley Kubrick. You want to know about movies, there'll be a good chance I'll know.

I looked at some of his other clips, and he took a lot of chances. For one thing, he was dependent on other stunt people (often driving vehicles) to get the timing right. There have been people doing stunts over the years that have been injured or killed. It's not a career for the faint-of-heart.
Infamously, one of the guys in Ben Hur fell under the horses while filming the chariot race. The shot was left in the movie as a tribute - you can see a chariot bounce over him.

The amount of unplanned moments that get kept in movies is amazing.

Two of my faves are the roof coming off the building in TOP GUN: MAVERICK as the Darkstar goes overhead was unplanned but kept in.

And famously the flag being blown off the pole during the Rohan scene in Lord of the Rings. Just an amazing piece of luck that it occurred.

I suggest Buster Keaton's The General. That is the source of all American action/comedy movies and it's better than many being filmed today.

You may not like it em, there's no color, no dialog, and no sound, so the director had to concentrate on filming some of the most amazing stunts and physical comedy ever filmed
I remember that Buster Keaton has a small role in Sunset Boulevard. He's one of the silent-movie stars who gather at Norma Desmond's house for bridge games and parties. Norma herself had been a silent-movie star (as was Gloria Swanson who plays her). She laments that the silent movies were better, that the coming of sound ruined a lot of careers, including her own.

A very good comedic showing of this takes place in Singing in the Rain which shows the early days of "talkies." A lot of the vignettes are hilarious but actually happened.

It was the same with the original Mad Max movie. The legend is a stunt motorbike rider died in a head on crash with the truck and the Director left it in as a tribute. Didn't happen.

I know I’m being totally off topic, but up to 7k words with my effort.

Em
It occurred to me that one could write a Geek Pride story about stunt people, so maybe it isn't that far off topic. It could be set in the 1920's or in the present. Anyway, I forgot, how many words do you anticipate when finished?

Probably around 20k. But I’m actually worried about it taking on a life of its own and becoming a 30k behemoth. 7k hasn’t even got me to the main story line yet.

I'd not remembered that. I guess it would have been poor taste if the poor guy had been killed, and they ran over his corpse.
He was already dangling, so maybe he fell ten feet instead of fifteen or twenty, which probably would have killed him. Also, he doesn't seem to be using anything on the ground to soften the impact, which I think is how it's usually done now. Yeah, I guess that car was going too fast to stop at that point. Another example of how he had to rely not just on his own perfect timing, but the skills of other people to also time it just right.

Okay, so for my Geek Pride story, I'm going to post a fantasy story.

But the gimmick is, when the main character first meets the Eldritch being (basically a goddess) she speaks in an overwhelming, incomprehensible language.

I chose to represent this with words absolutely  wrecked by diacritics. For example:

W̸̞͋͗̊h̸͓̀a̷̤̍t̸̡̫͓̏ ̶͇̗̿̇͑m̵̲̬̈́̋o̴̧̨̘͗͌̀r̶̦͙̠̍̌ẗ̷̢̜̪̌́ą̷̌͐̒l̵̳̙̗̐͊ ̶̘̺̬̌ḑ̸̳̯́a̷̫̲͗̊͝r̸̫̜̭̿͛ẽ̴̘̰̗́̽s̷͔̹̽̉ ̷̳̙̏t̸̛̠̞̻ǒ̵̲̘̃ ̵͎̙̱̒d̷̩̃͝ḯ̷̩̥̆ş̸̳̿̈ṱ̶͙͓̆ų̴̯̃̄r̵̪̖̈b̸̟͚͌̿ ̸͈̏̕m̶͍͒͋̈́e̸̯̚?̵͆̎̈́

Obviously, that's hard to read, but L'ventia doesn't have much dialogue, and she steadily decreases the "glitchy-ness" of her words when she realizes that she can't be comprehended.

Anyway, my question is, will this post on the site properly? It  does look right in the preview page, but that's no guarantee.

Btw the last time I asked this question in the forums, the topic suddenly became "Is glitchy looking text a good idea?" and the general consensus was "No, it's a bad idea, most of us hate it." 😂

That isn't a concern of mine. I like the idea so I will use it, if it works. Does anyone know if it'll work?

Didn't Michael Cimino say that Heaven's Gate took on a life of its own? (I know, I'm doing it again!) Anyway, it looks like my main story line starts at around 5,500 K words out of a total of 11,600. Maybe I'm just succinct?

To be honest, I don't know if it's ever been tried. I understand what you're trying to do, but normally most fancy formatting gets stripped out prior to the post going up. Even if you submit a Word doc in Times New Roman, it gets converted to Arial.

Leave a note for Laurel in the notes box, but be prepared to lose it.

I need to get cranking on this. I was doing great, 6k done and then had an idea for another story and I went chasing after that squirrel. I switch to night shift on the 24th, so that will free up some more time for writing.

I’ve only ever written erotic poetry but this sounds really fun! Long time reader first time poster (pending poems).

Any tips or advice?

I’m thinking D&D related…

The original genesis of this event centered around SF and fantasy stories, and I've tended to stay in that niche when I've contributed. Same this year.

D&D would fit perfectly. As for tips or advice? Write something you'd like to read, make sure it's over 750 words, and it will find readers!

Honestly, I can deal with losing it.

What I definitely don't want is a bunch of complete grawlix in place of it. If it comes out looking like
$%^&*()_+{:>?"""{_)(*&^% THEN I'll be actually disappointed.

(Funny, my browser is telling me that "grawlix" is spelled incorrectly, even though I know it isn't. lol)

The interesting thing is, this does not require any fancy formatting. It just requires the presence of diacritics (which of course, Literotica allows. I guess we'll see.

[Edit] Okay, so I just posted a poem as a test. It was a short section of prose with the heavy diacritics used. It's called Diacritix's Test.
I'll let you know what I find out. I tested it with a poem, because those can be as short as you want. (My last poem did take forever to post though... so this one might be the same. Hopefully not.

Go for it! We've seen stories about people who play D&D, stories about characters who would fit right into a D&D campaign, and plenty of other variations. If you've played other roleplaying games, be they fantasy or SF or something else, feel free to try that!

If it's your first time writing a story, my best advice would be to read your dialogue out to yourself as you write it. There are some phrases that look good on the page but just sound weird or off when spoken aloud.

I've found that the overall key is making interesting characters. If you're just mashing two action figures together, folks lose interest quick. But if you give your characters distinct personality and a nice mix of flaws and strengths, that helps tremendously in having your characters get that romantic/sexual chemistry, not to mention being more appealling to the reader.

I'd also suggest not getting too bogged down into the nitty-gritty of body details, like giving exact measurements for a guy's junk or a lady's chest.

Good luck!

Kind of a rules question. I want to do the backstory for The Geek Prince, the IT director of the Lodge in my Penal Slavery universe ( and main character of IT Slave) and Poms. Kind of a geek romance, just with more collar and sex.

The problem is that it's going to come off as a direct follow-up to IT Slave. Is that within the rules?

You're mixing up anecdotes. The "being run over by a chariot" is from Ben Hur in 195? something. Buster Keaton was the one who fell from the water tower and broke his neck, filming The General, in 1924, thereabouts.

Is your question "Can these stories connect to previous stories?"

Because, if so, the answer is yes. The story has to be self-contained... It isn't supposed to be Chapter 3 in a six part story, but it CAN be an offshoot story featuring characters from other stories.

Case in point, the April Fools 2nd place entry consisted of a spin-off featuring characters from Duleigh's other stories.
(also this is just a challenge, not a contest... so the rules are a bit more lax, I believe)

Probably not on a phone, which is what many readers use. I think all formatting gets stripped from the phone apps.
When I preview the story on my phone, it does still show up like I want it to. But I've just posted a test poem, so we'll know for sure in a few days. (Or more like a week, maybe. My last poem took FOREVER to post)

I can't even get small caps to go through. How do you indicate the word of death without small caps?
