The 2023 Geek Pride Story Event: Official Support Page

Would characters who like creating fantasy worlds rather than established science fiction and superhero works qualify as Geeks?

My idea was a story set in the early 1990s about an overweight, naive 18-year-old girl who along with her gay male best friend love working on their own fantasy adventure stories, only for her focus to change when she meets the pretty daughter of her mother's new boyfriend and has these new feelings she hasn't had before ...
Since I just happened to see this: yeah, it certainly sounds fine for a geek story.

One more month to go... I'll make it. Hell, I did 2 25k stories last year... maybe I'll try for one 50k this year.
You mean a 25 K word stand-alone story? That's rather long, indeed, at least by my standards. I've had series and "clusters" of sequels that in effect were series, but I didn't attempt to write them in one swoop. They were done sporadically over months or even years.

Looks like I'm going to try to retool the story I was hoping to do for on the job over to here. I was writing a story about an Alien working as a paid volunteer to help in a science experiment, so that should be easy to slide over.

I was in the groove - it was my first event and the story just poured out of me, followed up by a second part that was longer, and after the event closed a third part hit.

The Gate - A New Green Man Appears 27,550 words
The Gate - Elvish Has Left 31,152 words
The Gate - Going Home 25,527 words

I really had fun on that third one

I'm working on two seperate lesbian stories, only one will be submitted for this.

Draft nearly done. Not sure it's funny enough for Humour/Satire, or kinky enough for BDSM, but there's not enough sex for anywhere else... I'll have to see how the draft scrubs up.

A beta reader who isn't an obsessive board game geek would be appreciated - it's under 6k words.

I can have a look if you want.

Dang. I've been sidetracked by songs.

Must. Focus. On. Geek story...
Haha. I'm the same distance in to a sequel for my story in the first Geek Anthology as I was this time last year. It's my slowest ever "work in progress." Problem is, I know exactly what needs to happen to get it to a conclusion. That's probably the problem: I know the outcome, so I don't need to write it. The curse of a pantser writer!

Someone said they had a title. That reminded me of a title that I came up with last year. I looked back and found it, and I discovered that I had started a story around it. It was a pretty good start too... The title is 'Mother has a Thousand Faces'. Look for it in a theater near you. I know I stopped writing it because it's hard work, making a Kingdom with Dukes and Duchesses and track of the strange names and places... Fudge!

One month to go. I've got a great idea, and an even better title, but two other stories in line ahead of it, so we'll see. It's partly written but there is still much to go.

After binging some truly good Science Fiction I woke up one morning with the title "Martians Mate for Life" in my head with a thousand plot bunnies infesting my house. I probably won't make it in time, I'm working on an homage to Terry Pratchett, but I may be able to use a character or two...

So my Geek Pride story is a fantasy set in a medieval world of my own creation.
My story was loosely inspired by this Alzward comic strip.

This is just the boost I need to get back into writing. I'm stoked to have this entry be my first story submission here.
This is what these challenges are for - get the creative juices flowing with no consequences, no pressure and a chance to get your work seen. It did it to me too, one year, 45 submissions and a contest win ago.

I'm working on something for this...it's definitely veers fantasy, so nothing like what I've written for here before. Hopefully I'll get it done, I'm about 4k words in so far but there's a big chunk to go by the looks of what my plan is. It's fantasy, and somewhat loosley based upon The Tempest...we'll see how it goes.

That's why I set so many stories in New Jersey or Brooklyn or wherever. I don't have to keep track of where Englewood Cliffs is. Not many Dukes or Duchesses, however.

Loqui and I are about 11k words into our second Red Tsonia sword'n'sandal collab. It will be a very close finish this year, between me having been horribly sick and our apartment torn to shreds by another case of disintegrated plumbing. Still, we're fighting on! "Red Tsonia and the Jungles Of Madness", another episode in the (hopefully) long and illustrous career of a barbarian warrior. Standalone, purposefully written to be either a prequel or a sequel to last year's "... Witch In The Dark." Once again, we're going full Howard on it and despite the difficulty in creating it, I'm grinning like an idiot. It's just that much fun.
In the queue! I've been rereading Howard recently and itching to come up with something a little barbaric myself. And I just heard of loqui for the first time the other day in Simon's sci fi thread. Can't wait to check it out! (Well, I can wait a little because I have 500 stories in the queue but this is going near the front)

That makes me think of Heinlein. 'The Moon is a Harsh Misstress'. I don't know why...

While you're at it, give his "Motive with a Universal Adapter" a whirl. It's hands-down one of the best cyberpunk stories I've read - erotic OR mainstream.

Just passed 28K and had to call a halt for the night. This story is so much fun to write, but there's no way to break it into two stories.

I am actually going to finish my submission - was awfully stuck in the middle.

I’ve now written the end (pretty much for motivational reasons) and understand how bridge the gap between this and I what I wrote earlier. At 20k words now. Suspect it will be between 25k and 30k when done, depending on how much of the missing bit I do in detail as opposed to exposition.

Pretty happy TBH.

It’s even got a title: Caputpedes.

I did the same thing, I wrote the ending a while ago and am now working toward that point. When I discovered that Terry Pratchett actually liked fan fiction there was no holding me back, maybe 35K, we'll see. It's entitled "Enchantress"

The only thing I'd be concerned about is that you will have to edit and proofread the whole thing. I tend to take a break of a couple of days maybe so I don't have to read it all over again too quickly. I suppose you have a enough time to do that.

I mentioned how film editors and directors have to see the same scenes over and over again, and they start to lose track of what it's all supposed to mean. I've never quite gone that far, but I have thought: now I have to read this again?
