The 2023 Geek Pride Story Event: Official Support Page

It was FUN to write, I could easily sit down and double the word count, as Randy Quaid said in "The Paper" "It writes like butter! There's actual butter coming out of my pen!" I finally discovered what that meant.

JAX is 'way too big for me, it's near but I'm a small towy boy. I was most comfortable in Surrey ND pop 900. Now I live in a very, very small town as far north as you can get in Florida but I can be in Downtown JAX in 45 minutes if forced.
I have fun writing, but I usually have to take a break to recharge, often to the next day.

Did I mention I once went through North Dakota on I-94 in a bus? The Great Plains: very strange but awesome. Like being on the ocean except it's all land. Surrey is up near Minot. Was it anything like that?

Very similar, the farms have better windbreaks, You hit pretty big towns, Fargo, Bismarck, Dickenson, nothing like that up north. You also passed the badlands and the Burning Hills, which honestly are incredible. The plains are an acquired taste but a few episodes of "A Prairie Home Companion" is all it takes to understand the lifestyle and the people.

I love to write, but this story series is addicting. I feel guilty for each moment spent away from the keyboard.

Yeah, it was the area between Fargo and Bismarck where this particular scene struck me. At one place, the highway interchange was the highest spot around. There was some people there as the bus came in; I recall that they may have been there just to see the afternoon bus arrival. In any case, I had a hard time imagining what it would be like to live there. They would probably have a hard time imagining living in a metro area of twenty million. Just seeing it on TV or in the movies isn't enough. The noise level alone would be hard to imagine.

You must be writing for beyond Geek Pride even if the series is the same, right?

Right, I'm not sure where Enchantress 2 will fit or how big it will be, I'm at 12K words and just hitting the "meat" of the story

In ND we used to joke that a hill has a highway on the top and a drainage ditch at the bottom. however, the fishing is incredible, if you like walleye, Lake Sakakawea has the biggest walleye in North America, if you like Perch and Bass, Devil's Lake is incredible. For hunting the deer are HUGE and the geese and ducks fill the sky and block out the sun!

Hmmm... my story is still sitting in pending... I'll give it a few more days.

Mines about 80% done, but right now getting a chapter of Jeong done and finishing my Valentines Day story.... I keep crying tho, it's so sad, and its hard to write when you can't see the display LOL....it has a happy ending tho. Coming back to my Geek Day story after that - it's ...hmmm....not sure how to describe it, but my heroine is rather amoral. And a geek....
Chloe: I'm a newbie on the block but have some already-written unsubmitted stories starring hardcore nerds (and nerdish writing style). Q: What (if anything) is the difference between a "nerd" and a "geek"? Google Search gives mixed results on this question. Would "nerdish" stories be suitable for the Geek Pride story contest or get booed down for too many "big words" and nerdish ideas? Help, please. Quintessential Nerd

It's not a contest
Don't worry about big words and nerdish ideas, just have fun, write what you love, and let the world see what you got.

Well, don't get me wrong, I'd like to own a weapon just for target practice, but that's hard to do that where I am and I haven't fired a weapon since I was in the Boy Scouts around 1969 (skeet shooting, as I remember it). I've never owned a firearm of any kind. I would shoot deer and ducks if I needed the food, which many people do. And let's face it, a lot of cows are dying to make my hot dogs, but I don't have to do the job myself. They just come neatly in the package and I'm barely ware that this was some creature's living flesh.

I'm not a vegeterian or a vegan, but I guess I respect people who are. Their message seems to be: if you don't have to kill animals, then don't do it, even it's rather inconvenient. Through most of history, people had to slaughter the animals they ate, without the intervention of a meat-packing plant or Frank Perdue. They likely had a more realistic attitude about the whole thing. Was that Chicken McNugget actually a chicken once? It sure was. (I can't stand most fast food any longer.)

I doubt I've ever fished either, even in the Boy Scouts (it's been a while).

There is a lot of overlap, and no clear definitions. I guess a geek is somebody who has a lot of esoteric knowledge, and nerd is someone who is socially awkward. There must be plenty of people who are both. I wouldn't worry about it; just submit whatever what you think is best. (You can submit more than one if you wish.)

I'm posting this thread to officially kick off the "2023 Literotica Geek Pride Story Event”. Laurel will be creating the Event Page shortly - submissions can be sent in between May 15th and May 24th, with a Wednesday May 25th Go Live Date. That's MONTHS AWAY. Plenty of time for you to write something!

Okay... so forgive me for being difficult, but this states that submissions will go live on Wednesday, May 25th... but May 25th is a Thursday. So confused. Send help please. :ROFLMAO:

I'd go with geeks being nerds who know how to wash, while others would use the terms the other way round, "Festival of the Spoken Nerd", for example.

I really wouldn't worry. One year I submitted a story that was simply some generic geeks geeking about sex. No-one complained.

I'd hoped to have submitted my story for this year, but I need to be able to sit up and use the big screen to finish editing properly.

There's really not much distinction between "geek" and "nerd", to be honest. Everyone defines the words differently.
One easy definition would be media that deals with genres and subjects associated with superheroes, sf/fantasy, animation, video games and that sort of vibe. But honestly it really comes down to "this is something I really love and put a lot of thought into it." There are people who are geeky/nerdy about trains, postage stamps, McDonald's happy meal toys, or breakfast cereals. A sommelier is a wine nerd/geek who gets paid to nerd/geek out about wine. An art history professor is a nerd/geek for oil paintings or marble sculpture or whatever "fine art" they focus on.

"Geek Pride", to me at least, means that you either write about a subject that you really enjoy and can talk at length about, or writing about people who have a thing that they really enjoy and can talk about.

To put it another way:

John and Suzy meet, decide they like each other, and then go somewhere private to fuck = not really geeky or nerdy at this point
John and Suzy meet because they're both Superheroes, decide they like each other, and then go somewhere private to fuck = geeky/nerdy
John and Suzy meet because they're both Superheroes, decide they like each other because it turns out they both like the same obscure European board game, and then go somewhere private to fuck = very geeky/nerdy
John and Suzy meet because they're both Superheroes, decide they like each other because it turns out they both like the same obscure European board game, and then the author describes the unusual and fascinating architecture and history of the hotel where they go to fuck = Mega geeky/nerdy

There's really no wrong answer. Even two people meeting and then fucking because they're both mega-fans of the Denver Broncos or a certain stand-up comedian whose show they met at, that could be nerdy/geeky.

Embrace what you and/or the characters love, incorporate it into your story, and it should work out just fine.

Not washing is a bit extreme, I think. Mostly they do that. But many people think someone else is a nerd, not themselves. It's one of those very adolescent concepts that starts to lose it's importance with maturity. But yeah, my Geek heroine knows a lot, but she's mostly socially adept. Or to put it another way, she's not as concerned about what other people think of her as what she thinks of them.

You changed your avatar? Is that really you? Believe me, I'm not putting my face on here! To digress a bit, my Facebook page, which I rarely use, has my real name but not a single photo of me or anybody I know. People overdo that quite a bit.

OOOPS
I think HeyAll did the same thing with his On the Job event support page, I know I almost did it with the 750 Word Event

We copy the data from last years Support Page just to make sure that we have everything right, but it looks like Chloe didn't double check the dates when she pasted everything into this years post. My story just got a go-live date of Thursday, May 25.

Alright. Anyone in the mood for a spot of beta reading?

"Red Tsonia and the Jungles of Madness" Howard-esque sword and sandal adventure. Pirates! Shipwrecks! Jungles! In dire need of a good ending!

PM if interested. It's a long read at 33k words and kinda urgent so I understand if there's few takers.

Yep, that’s me. I’m not shy in the slightest. I honestly don’t photograph often, I typically enjoy playing amateur photographer and take photos of nature and food, which is majority of my social media presence. Perhaps I’m a bit of a masochist as well for putting my face out there, but hey… anybody stupid enough to take an accurate avatar photo as an invitation to be creepy or forward deserves my venomous, soul crushing rejection.

I’ll probably use my avatar photo on the back of a novel someday. 😅

I’m thinking it’s going to be May 25th regardless of the day it falls on… but my anxiety just felt the need to ask for clarification.

I'm going to be 68 at the end of the month, so I wouldn't expect anything creepy or any soul-crushing rejections. I just look my age. But I'm still not going to do it. If I ever do a novel (completely unlikely) I'd probably use the subway train photo again.

Happy early birthday to you… and hey, I don’t blame you at all. Ambiguity is one of the many greats of the internet. Swapping out my avatar is experimental, my nonchalance withstanding. I wondered if it would effect viewership. I suppose I’ll soon find out.

I think the subway train photo would go over quite nicely as an author portrait for a novel.

My story isn't far enough along to finish by the deadline. I'm going to submit it to the AI event instead, since it's very much an AI story.

Just been discussing appts with the doctor. "I'm sure something's happening on the 25th..."
Ah, this deadline. Not a crisis!

Yeah. Got a vague recollection of somewhere I need to be, bit hazy on it... uh just that it needs WiFi access....
