The BDSM Book Club Discussion Thread

I love short stories but felt that Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down was basically 3 stories that really didn't mesh well with the intended theme.

I didn't think any of them were outstanding in any great way.

Taking them one by one:

Captivated By You by Sherrilyn Kenyon started out decently in that the banter between the two main characters was entertaining. I had no issues with the switching roles between the two characters in that I would expect some of that to happen to folks who are new to BDSM. I have to agree with Fury in that the ending sucked - it just fizzled. This whole story had the feel of an Anita Blake story with the whole macho female working with the guys.

Promise Me Forever by Melanie George was a bodice ripper romance story - it was horrible and felt like filler in this collection (still haven't figured out why the editor would include it). Hated it!

Hunter's Right by Jaid Black was probably the most entertaining of the three although it felt like it should have been more than a short story in order to do the plot any justice. I enjoy futuristic type fiction which this story was to me.

Did you like the book overall or not?

No I didn't like it overall but hey it was short and only took an hour or so to read so I didnt feel robbed....hehe.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Not even close, although I would say the first story did portray bdsm in possible ways a couple might "play" with bdsm in the bedroom occasionally

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Some in the first story were okay.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

The story was lacking for me in all the last one. I wanted to read more about the characters in the last one.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

I might check out the first and last author but definitely not the second one. Somehow I would expect the cover to have fabio with some girl sitting at his feet on it - no thanks!

What did you like best about this selection?

It didn't suck up my time.

What did you like the least?

The fact that the 3 stories didn't have a common thread to pull them together as a true collection.

How would you have changed the story?

I agree with Fury's 2 cps on the first story character development

Second story I would have had deleted.

Third story I think the author should have expanded it and gone into more details about how the two main characters relationship develops.

Thanks Kierae!

Looks like we agree about most of it. Glad to see what you thought and have some company reading!

Did anyone else read this December 2006's Book of the Month, Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down by Jaid Black et. al. and wish to discuss it?

I read it, but I haven't written anything up yet. I want to though and am hoping to get my thoughts organized and something posted within the next day or so. I have to admit book reports weren't one of my best school efforts though so no guarantee on how good it's going to be... LOL

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Who is planning on reading along in January and February?

*bounces*

Fury :rose:

Already read February's... :), but I'm planning on January's as well, just have to pick it up.

I just started Kushiel's Dart yesterday so will put my 2 cps in on that one (assuming the puppies dont chew the book up). I looked for the january's choice and of course it wasn't at the library - although I am honestly not sure why considering I read the reviews and there appears to be barely any adult material in it so I can only assume they couldn't get past the title name.

Anyways, will look for a cheap copy but not going to pay full price for it (it really doesn't sound my cup of tea). I will pick up February's though!

I just picked up a copy of Slave Trade for a little over $6.00 (book and shipping) from Amazon.com. My library didn't have it either and Ebay was almost twice that much.

Mine too even though I rarely buy books unless I have a gift certificate or as a present for someone else.

LOL.

Did you like the book overall or not?

I can enjoy anthologies when the stories are well written. I'm familiar with Sherrilyn Kenyon and Jaid Black so I had high hopes for this book. Hopes that unfortunately weren't realized.

Sherrilyn Kenyon's contribution is part of her "Bad" series. I've read a couple other stories in this series and haven't found them to be her best. I've read some others of her work that I've enjoyed, but most of the characters in this series don't seem to be as fleshed out as they could be.

I found the premise of the story by Melanie George a little too unrealistic to be enjoyable. The idea that 10 yrs could go by and on the eve of marrying another an old flame shows up and she's ready to chuck it all. Especially when it was made obvious that he wasn't particularly a prize in the 1st place. I also felt the totally calm and understanding fiance hard to believe.

Jaid Black is an author I've heard a lot of good things about, but haven't taken the time to delve into her work. I found parts of her story showed promise, but felt short changed in the heroines ready acceptance of her fate with so little conflict. I also would have been interested in learning more of the culture she landed in. Not knowing more of the author's work there's a chance this could be part of a series she has out and I'd be interested in perhaps checking into that possibility.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

The only BDSM part I found interesting was the Domme training in the 1 story and it didn't go into enough detail to be satisfying.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

None of the sex scenes seemed particularly extraordinary, although it's possible my lack of enthusiasm for the stories themselves might have colored my thoughts.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

The only story that I found with much appeal was Jaid Black's, although it was too short and skipped too many details that could have made it a better.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

I believe I'll continue with the Sherrilyn Kenyon series I've enjoyed already, but probably not more of her "Bad" series. I'm not too sure about Melanie George, but I'm still interested in trying more of Jaid Black's work.

What did you like best about this selection?

As has been said before it was a quick read so I didn't end up investing a lot of time or energy in it.

What did you like the least?

I felt it was misrepresented as being particularly erotic or even the heroes being particularly alpha. I was also disappointed that at least the two authors that I already knew of have done better work.

How would you have changed the story?

I think in the 1st story the characters needed more depth as well as there being more detail to the case they were working on.

The second story needed rewritten from plot line on. At the very least the old flame needed to come into town sooner and have some interaction with his daughter. That might have justified a renewal of interest from the herione and would have made it more understandable that she could break things off with the fiance.

The 3rd story had good characters and deserved a more in depth story. What was there I think could have easily been expanded into a full length story on it's own.

Thanks Rox!

It looks like all of us who read this selection agree it didn't cut it at all!

I hope next month's is waaaaay better!

Anyone else have comments? Or want to discuss part of it? Or the BDSM book club in general?

I've read it. I wasn't too pleased. I like both Jaid Black and Sherrilyn Kenyon, but I rarely like their short stories. It's been a while since I've read it. What's the next book selection?

Thanks for contributing Graceanne!

It's sooooo good to have you back again.

These are the books for the next two months.

The selection for January 2007 is: Slave Trade by Susan Wright.

The selection for February 2007 will be Natural Law by Joey W. Hill.

Assuming I can get the books I'm in. :nana:

Quick question, I checked out the Slave Trade books on barnes and nobles web site, and is this story non-consent? Or just reluctance?

I honestly don't know. I've not been able to get it from my library yet. Since a revolution is sparked I'm thinking it's non-consent.

I don't blame you. At this rate I worry about even getting the book in January at all!

Do you think maybe we should have a backup book? Like if no one has the book by the 15th we do this one instead?

That might be a good idea!

I went to a book store today and couldn't find it there either.

Everyone chime in please???

We could go to the next book if no one has it but if some have this one I wouldn't want to mess things up.

I might miss one for a change. Damn it!

I ordered it, but it hasn't come in yet. I'm sure it'll be in before the end of the month, but if we want to switch it's fine with me.
