I would guess it refers to the period between WWII and the mid-'70s, when it was possible for a white man, at least, with only a high-school education to earn a middle-class income. "Guys like us they had it made / Those were the days."

I am thinking the 50's and rock and roll and Truman. Trump would have been a kid growing up in Queens. Segregation was rampant in the South so I am not sure. Maybe for the MAGATs it was great but there were a lot of things not so great. The 60s and Viet Nam and segregation and Nixon........... ?
