so was I!! I hope I said something like, "No! Only with butter!", then I hope I said a close approximation of, " But now Christmas is coming. Bring me a cup of ... gluehwein!"

Which was my word and 'gluewein' is mulled wine, and is commonly found at Christmas markets in Germany. It smells and tastes so wonderful when your little fingers are going numb but you aren't done shopping!

Oh, and if I remember correctly, 'senf' is mustard. Where we lived, butter was the common topping for pretzels, might have been different elsewhere.

Better than a close approximation. That's exactly what you said.

"Elsewhere" is any large city where vendors sell real pretzels on the street. Senf doesn't seem to be popular on pretzels in Germany--odd because the Germans are so damn good at making both--but mustard-topped pretzels are a huge hit in New York, Boston, and most other large northeastern cities.

The bad news is that you now have me craving gluewein, which I'll never find out here in the boonies.
