The Official Valentine’s Day Contest Support Thread 2026

I had a question about rules clarification, but I wasn't able to find a good place to put it - hopefully here will work.

I noticed the rules stated that the submitted story could not be a chapter of a larger work, which makes sense to me. However, I was wondering how that aligned with works in a series. I had an idea of what I'd like to write and it would integrate cleanly into an existing 'world' I had created and was exploring through an existing series, but I wasn't 100% it would be eligible as it's still an entry in a larger world, if that makes sense.

If this is in the wrong place, please let me know and I'll continue searching for the answer!

Thanks!

If you check back a few pages, I had a similar question and this was answered.

Basically, stand alone story, same universe, is fine.

I’ve made mine into a story between two larger pieces of work but the storyline flows all the way through.

Your story can utilize existing characters and even refer to prior events. But it must have a start, middle, and end, and people must be able to read it without having read any other works. It must be stand-alone. So chapter nine which just starts where chapter ten finished and with no other context and explanation provided is not allowed.

For example, here is the beginning of my Valentine’s entry from 2024, Lily’s First Valentine. This features my banished angel and demon girlfriends, Lily and Emma. But, as you can see, I recapitulate for new readers.

I, and several other authors that I know of participating in this thread, connect all of our stories to a shared universe. As long as the story can be read and enjoyed without any confusion from having not read any of your other works AND without waiting for another chapter (i.e. it has an ending), it's a standalone story and eligible.

My entry references my ongoing series as well as my Christmas story, but if you had never read them, you wouldn't even notice the references - they're just easter eggs for my followers. The story doesn't rely on them in any way.

I do things the same way. A story set in the universe I built, referencing characters and themes from other works. However, the entries can always be read as standalone works.

A quick spot check suggests that those Jan 13th stories that got published early and were intended for Valentine’s have made it to the comp page. But shout if you have any problems.

I present to you: Peta & Sam, a short story following on from my novel Peta/Sam and taking part in the Valentine’s Day Contest 2026.

Peta & Sam is a short companion story that follows directly on from the novel Peta/Sam, capturing the moment when two people who have spent years almost finding each other finally choose to stay.

Reunited in London, Peta and Sam move quickly from physical reconnection to an unambiguous decision: to marry, to blend their families, and to stop running from what they’ve always known. Alongside humour, explicit intimacy, and cultural friction, the story explores grief, responsibility, and the quiet work of becoming a family.

Set around an intimate wedding in Holland Park and its aftermath, Peta & Sam closes one chapter of their relationship while opening another — a love story no longer defined by longing, but by choice and consequence.

January 13th

For Valentine’s now it’s day four
And your FMC’s down on the floor
On her knees with mouth wide
Saying, "Put it inside!”
A request you just can’t ignore
Do you have these pre-written or just think them up on the spot?

I just started my story yesterday. :( While I'm not a huge fan of Valentines day, I'm known as a romance author so I guess I have to make a showing.
Going to try Mature again. For us old folks it's permissible to hate the hoopla around Valentines Day.
