As a suggestion, you can expand some romantic feelings on Valentine's day. Say they don't think romance is for them, or they have fruitlessly searched and not found love. Regardless of the reason, Valentine's day can put it under a magnifying glass. Where their woes might normally be a background noise, it comes to the foreground.

All I'm saying is, Gimli's got something about him. Yeah, Legolas, fine whatever. But Feanor is the best elf. And Galadriel tells him to get stuffed. The second Gimli's on the scene, it's all oooh, baby, take my hair! Ooh Gimli, forge it into an heirloom symbolizing friendship between the Wood and the Mountain for all time. And then he gets to go to Heaven, the only dwarf who gets to go to heaven, because he's got two elves absolutely gaggin' for it. It's the fantasy equivalent of a big-dick-nerd story, I swear.
I've neve checked out gay romance novels, but that is exactly what I would expect for a cover if I did.
