There are lots of ways to look at this question, but for me I go back to how I look at any fictional writing in that it is supposed to be fiction. Under that guise, as a writer you have licence to let your imagination flow and write from that freedom, not from the angle of feeling you are providing a factual account, nor a safety or how to manuel. Of course, I also hate censorship, especially the levels it is reaching in our society of late, but bottom line is fiction should remain fiction in all its wonderful wanderings.
If your lucky, a good fiction will make people think and see things from a different perspective. I absolutely love reading something which makes me feel something other than negative for a character it would normally be considered natural to hate or at the least, seriously dislike. I recently experienced this while watching the BBC series 'Luther'....it was an interesting and clever twist.
