The Sewing Circle

I finally got around to watching.

The remake of Ladies They Talk About (1933).

Not bad, but not a patch on the original movie. Of course, it’s hard to outdo Barbara Stanwyck.

There was zero reference to lesbianism as far as I could see. Not just the cutting of the normalization of such in the first movie, but no reference at all. I wonder if that is due to it being pre-code. 🤔

Originally I was going to only post this beautiful image of Marlene Dietrich, courtesy of @cascadiabound (thank you!), because it's stunning. However, after going down a rabbit hole last night I discovered that this was taken from a film called Seven Sinners, also starring Quentin Crisp.

After a search on him I learned that he is a gay icon in film, and included an alternative synopsis of MDs career that really makes her shine, in his book titled, How to Go to the Movies. There is an excerpt from his book about MD here.

Thanks for taking the time to leave your review here! I'm guessing that it is pre-code as well but that seems to be a major part of the original so that's an interesting way to remake.

I follow this YT creator and she is a lesbian media commentator and this video is titled

A Look at Lesbian Cinema and Sapphic Themes in Cinema from the Early Twentieth Century

Although her editing is a little jumpy, she's unearthed quite a few new nuggets of info in this one
I was able to watch this a while back but didn't get a chance to comment. Loved this video sticky, thank you for leaving it here.
