The Sewing Circle

Was it really gay? I love the look of her eye make-up and those poses they seem to adopt in those early films. They're almost like statues

I have not seen it in its entirety, but it is very extravagant and flamboyant from the sections I have seen. It really needs to be in my queue.

I hope documentaries are ok? I'm gobsmacked ( because of what she / they did ) angry that I've never heard about this before ( why isn't this woman a national hero? ) and have blotches and stinging eyes from watching such an inspirational and basically feminist story.

Maiden: War on the Waves

Wow

"When Josephine Baker traveled, the black performers could not stay in white hotels because of segregation. There were few hotels for blacks because there were not enough blacks who needed that service. The performers had to stay in boardinghouses, where several women shared rooms and beds. Maude Russell, a black dancer and singer who often performed on the same stage as Josephine, explained the situation this way: 'Many of us had been kind of abused by producers, directors, leading men...And girls needed tenderness, so we had girl friendships, the famous lady lovers, but lesbians weren't well accepted in show business...I guess we were bisexual, is what you would call it today.'

As they traveled together, Josephine and Clara Smith became lovers. Josephine's sexual interest in women did not stop when, in later years, she was able to afford her own room. She continued to have female lovers throughout her life, in addition to her relationships with men."

I am loving this thread! I lived and worked in Los Angeles (after this time), but was on the outer circles of the Hollywood set. My past husband was a camera operator and later a cinematographer and I worked in what we can call the adult entertainment business, I guess. :D I was a photographers model and sometimes escort for awhile and though more out in the open now, it would shock a lot of people what goes on now. Likely not much different than in the past.
Please keep this thread going.I love it. :D
