The Sewing Circle

I am loving this thread! I lived and worked in Los Angeles (after this time), but was on the outer circles of the Hollywood set. My past husband was a camera operator and later a cinematographer and I worked in what we can call the adult entertainment business, I guess. :D I was a photographers model and sometimes escort for awhile and though more out in the open now, it would shock a lot of people what goes on now. Likely not much different than in the past.
Please keep this thread going.I love it. :D

It sounds like you might have a lot of interesting stories :D Thank you for the thread love! I'm glad you found it.

“Belle de Jour (1967) is about a rich, middle-class housewife Séverine who experiences sado-masochist fantasies and decides to become a prostitute by day in order to relieve her bordom. In the rather top-drawer brothel, she meets a strange array of characters and maybe falls in love with one of them. Nothing is certain. Director Luis Buñuel’s brilliantly clever surreal comedy is a comment on the French bourgeoisie whom he always saw as hypocritical profligates. It contains just a minor lesbian character. Genevieve Page plays the brother madam who displays more than a passing interest in her new recruit. Fairly unremarkable from the lesbian point of view, except that this stereotype is a precursor which occurs over and over in films too numerous to mention.”

If Deneuve was my newest recruit how could she have just a "passing interest in her?"

It is quite an interesting movie that my husband and a female couple watched. We all enjoyed it and especially enjoyed the emerging of sexual freedom.

Gosh, well done for seeing it on big screen. I'll have to wait till the DVD version comes out. Given the 90% lockdown the UK now, I can start going through my collection of movies when I'm not trying to find other things to occupy myself.

My husband and I have been enjoying our large movie collection that includes, needless to say, many LGBQT movies. WE have a rather diverse collection. *s*

I have been wanting to incorporate my love of old films, obsession with old actors/actresses, and my sexuality into something, and after reading a book of the same title "The Sewing Circle", I decided to create this thread.

The Sewing Circle refers to the group of lesbian, bisexual, or bi-curious Hollywood ladies. Actresses such as Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Tallulah Bankhead, Claudette Colbert, and Katharine Hepburn... Also, old Hollywood films that portrayed lesbian characters or had lesbian moments. More recent films and actors/actresses can also be shared, but I am going to focus on older films. Hope you enjoy.

Mädchen in Uniform (Leontine Sagan & Carl Froelich, 1931)

I just read your whole thread and it is amazing.
I love most the fashionable wardrobe.

This is a bit off topic, but not really. I am in love with these two images. I looked into the photographer and here is info about him and his work:

Helmut Newton was a German high-fashion photographer whose subversive approach to subject matter brought an edge to his editorial spreads. “There must be a certain look of availability in the women I photograph,” he said of his models. “I think the woman who gives the appearance of being available is sexually much more exciting than a woman who's completely distant. This sense of availability I find erotic.” Born on October 31, 1920 in Berlin, Germany, Newton’s Jewish heritage meant that he had to flee his home country during the Nazi rise to power. The artist settled in Australia in the 1940s, where he later set up a studio. Newton went on to photograph models Cindy Crawford and Charlotte Rampling for several well-known magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Playboy, and Elle. Though he continued to work commercially throughout his life, he began creating more personal work during the 1970s. In 1999, his now-famous book SUMO, was released by TASCHEN publishing house, chronicling decades of his most iconic work. The artist died in an automobile accident on January 23, 2004 at the age of 83 in West Hollywood, CA. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Library of Australia in Canberra, and the International Center of Photography in New York.

I was hoping to find out who the women are in these pictures but their names are not given. Oh well, they are still magnificent and I love his description of women being available rather than distant regarding the way he likes to capture them.

I never heard of this but it has to be such a great film: it has all the right themes going - waat it even stars Jennifer Ehle ( think the great BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, not the other one ). I'm not saying I have a moon-sized crush on Jennifer but, anyway, back to the film

The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Chloë Grace Moretz stars in Desiree Akhavan’s bittersweet drama tracking the doubts and defiance of a teenager sent to a gay conversion facility in 90s Montana, based on a 2012 novel. Here's the Guardian review
