Thyri's humble little shack out back

Thanks for telling me "by tomorrow". I can stop spamming my refresh button now. :)

I have new ideas, but I find the characters that it requires are outside of my scope of ability. I can perhaps put together a bio for her, but I could not keep up writing her in a believable fashion. There's so much inertia to get over before a thread begins.

*Smiles* I had no idea that you were waiting that eagerly. I'll post the rest of what I have for you. Thank you for reading along.

I don't know if it helps, but when I write, I get into the character by 'becoming' her. For this reason I don't call myself a writer, but a role player. I put myself into my character, and then just write what I 'feel and do and say'.

I made a list!!! YAY!!!!

And for once, it's not one where someone wants me dead!!!

double yay!!!!

*Giggles* Heavens no! I think your writing would suffer from post mortem lack of inspiration. ;)

I came back from dinner to find Dessert!

Becoming the character, for me, means I step into her circumstance and her shoes.I play the profession or role or race. But it doesn't mean I'm able to change my personality. It means that certain characters that require certain... characteristics, I find it extremely hard to deliver. I just don't think like that. I'm not wired that way.

You're too kind. But thank you so much, it means a lot to me.

I suppose that technique doesn't work for everyone, it's just my way of doing it. I hope that you can find a way that works for you; your writing is too good to pass up.

Leaves a bunch of :rose:s and a little note

For including me on your list...you're on mine too!

'Twas not a charity, my Sister. You more than earn your place in my desires. But to be truthful, I shouldn't need to put you on that list. Your name along with a couple others there is not likely to be forgotten by me. That list should really be more for me to remember the relative new acquaintances I take note of. If my memory for names and faces were better, I wouldn't need to write the list down at all. But I'd likely forget my own name if it were not for people calling me by it now and then.

While sauntering through the varied forested and wooded places in Lit, I stumble across a place I have heard of, but had not ever found until this time. Pausing for a moment to decide whether or not to be social, I decide "to hell with it" and approach in the hope of finding the resident 'home'

Hello? Anyone home?

*The industrial strength air fresheners work their magic with a quiet hum. But still the sound does not hide the friendly knock on the cheery wooden door. A quick peek through the heart shaped opening brings a smile to my lips and I open the door wide.*

Welcome! Come right in and be comfortable. There's drinks in the cooler, and things around here are rather informal. But I always keep a seat available for guests.

Thank you, Thyri. I will admit to having kinda stalked you since you joined Lit. Stalk, I think is not the right word. Observed with an interest would be a better description.

I wander over to the indicated cooler, finding something to my liking, then sit myself down in on of the places set aside for just such a need.

This is a nice place. It fits you, or at least my image of you.

Thank you for your hospitality too. You have made me feel most welcome.

How is it in your part of the world, right now? Hopefully a little more pleasant than it is where I am. It's in the high 80's Fahrenheit, no sign of even the slightest sea breezes and blue sky from horizon to horizon. For me, only the last one is any good.

Takes a slow sip of the drink, relaxing further in the presence of good company.

*Popping open a bottle of Woodchuck hard cider and sits back, relaxing.*

I'm flattered to hear that. And don't worry. I have learned the difference between the stalkers and admirers. ;)

Today was a good day. Weather wise it started cool and rainy; not good for looking at country properties, but by the time I reached the first one, it stopped raining and was beginning to break clear. By the end of the day it was mostly sunny and blue skies, with temperatures around 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit. All in all a very good day.

You mention sea breezes; are you near the coast?

Well, having a little rain before looking at properties can be a good thing. It gives you an idea if there are any issues with localized flooding, or drainage. As for the temperature, that is something I could handle right now.

Have any luck seeing anything appealing to you?

Me, I live in the state's capital, which is a river city and located on the coast, mostly by a large, sheltered bay. I'm about 10 minutes drive from the bay. On the foreshore, we have a salt water swimming pool, recently converted from a tidal pool to one with a fixed depth, a park with some whales that spurt water at irregular intervals as well as a well developed series of parks. Good places to take the Blonde Horde, aka my 2 sons, when they need to get out of the house.

That sounds perfectly wonderful! I tend to be more of a mountain girl than a beach girl, but I do love boats and being on the water. I like the way it feels on my skin too. I find it very sensual, and also find it seems to have spiritual/emotional qualities. Have you noticed that whenever you have a troubled mind, when you go to water, your cares seem to be taken away by the flow, whether it is the tides or the river or stream.

I'd like to find a property with some water on it, perhaps a stream or river frontage, even a lake. Unfortunately the two properties I looked at today had none. One was rather steep and remote with a treacherous dirt road leading to it. And the other was very well located, perfect land, but needed a lot of junk clean up, and the house would need a lot of work. It was more expensive than I could afford with my current house, and I'm not ready to sell mine yet. My plan is to remodel over the course of the next year to year and a half, then sell mine and get a place in the country with acreage. I only looked at these today because I had to know if I was letting the perfect prospect go by. All in all though, I think I will stick to my plan.

Well, being Australian, 90% of us are within a few hours travel of the coast, and maybe a little further from a beach. But then, there are places within a few hours drive that are excellent bush land for walking in, or just finding a spot to enjoy the view. I'm lucky that way. I can go to mountains, bush, rivers/creeks/streams, enclosed water and surf beaches - all within day trip range.

Water. It clears the air, cools it too. The sound of a creek in flow is what I find soothing. Just the sounds of the water going over large stones is enough to ease my mind. Pity most of those I know about are not flowing enough to supply those sounds. Damned hot weather.

Yeah, looking now, even about a year out from the move, is not a bad idea. It'll give you a better idea of what the prices are, as well as helping you refine the image in your mind as to what is right for you.

Any plans for the acreage, or do you like the thought of have a nice plot of land just for you?

The plan is to have enough to raise some animals on for food, (chickens, possibly goats, or a couple cows.) and also have a good sized garden. I'd like it to be partially open and partially wooded, with enough acreage for my target shooting. This also means that it needs to be out of town, and hopefully with understanding neighbors. My sister is hopeful that I'll have enough land to hunt on. She wants to try hunting for wild pigs and turkey.

At the home I have now, which is in town, I have an interior courtyard. I dug a fair sized koi pond with a waterfall and bog filter, and then a deck around it, enclosed by a screen roof above. It's a very nice space, and the sound of the waterfall is so soothing! I love it! My wifi reaches out to that deck too, so sometimes I take my laptop out there to write.

Hunting... I remembered doing that many, many years ago. Though we went for the common vermin - rabbits, foxes and if really lucky, the odd feral cat. I never went were there were wild pigs, and the only weapon we had with the stopping power was a little out of my league at that tender age.

Interior courtyard? What, the house surrounds it, or encloses it entirely?

Facepalms Helps if I read a little further and get a better picture, doesn't it.

Hmmmm... it does sound lovely. I have got a mental image of it now, and damn I could use something like that right now. Right down to the wifi connection and everything. My wifi reaches the back yard, so I can sit out on the bench in the shade during the afternoon and browse things on my iPad. If I want to add the sounds of running water, I'd have to hose the garden or the lawn.

The acreage reminds me of something I have been curious about for a while. What got you interested in shooting and guns initially?

My house is an L shaped Ranch style, which accounts for two of the sides of the enclosed courtyard. Then my attached garage is the third side, and the fourth side is a wall that connects the garage to the other portion of the L of the house. When I bought this house, the whole area was filled with pea gravel and there was an outdoor patio table and chairs set, along with a small evergreen bush, and sidewalks along two edges. Now the deck is built over the sidewalks along the same two edges, and the pond is in place of the pea gravel picnic area. It's maybe 34-42 inches deep. That is to say, the shallowest part is around 34 inches, and the deepest part is 42 inches or so. The shape of the pond is sort of a tri-lobal (rounded triangle) shape.

Well, what got me started in shooting I guess was that I grew up with a brother, father, and grandfather who would shoot occasionally. My grandfather taught me how to shoot a pistol in fact. Then later, when I married David, he was a soldier and was also interested in shooting. We would shoot together now and then. He taught me a lot. When he died, I didn't go shooting for a long time. But about a year and a half ago, my brother took me shooting at a range near his home in Ohio while I was visiting up there. I think he wanted to see if I could still outshoot him, even though it had been years since the last time. He found out I hadn't forgotten anything.

That got me interested in it again, and when I got home from that visit, I found a local outdoors club and joined. Since then I've gone shooting there nearly every weekend, and my gun collection has grown to around 13 firearms, between pistols, long guns, and a shotgun. I mostly like the western style guns, like cowboy six shooters, lever action rifles, and the double barrel 'stagecoach' shot gun. But I do have more modern style guns too.

The one I put the spring in tonight is a modern style .22 caliber revolver. Altogether I have (4) .22 pistols, (3) .22 rifles, (2) .357 magnum pistols, (1) .357 lever action rifle, (1) 9mm revolver, (1) 9mm carbine, and the double barrel shotgun.

I like the challenge of precision accuracy. I suppose its the same love of precision that makes me good at my job in drafting. I don't really care to think of hurting anyone though, or killing animals. Other than for food if that's all I had, I wouldn't want to shoot an animal any more than a person.

note to self, don't fuck with Thyri... just sayin...

Half baked story idea

I had the idea of a mystery story. A serial killer is on the loose, but the cops cannot seem to catch him. No matter what leads they follow, it seems as if he is one step ahead of them. It's almost as if he knows every move they make, every police procedure of the investigation.

Desperate for any break as the victim count mounts higher and higher, the department brings in help in the form of a psychic. She is assigned to the investigating detective as his new partner. Of course he doesn't believe in that psychic mumbo jumbo....that is until her intuition starts giving her insight into the killer's actions. When the visions she gets of the killer and the crime scenes start seeming all too familiar, the hard boiled detective has no choice but to take her seriously... And when the visions begin to reveal who the real killer may be, the young psychic finds herself in danger of becoming the killer's next victim.

What Vail said. I've been looking for a detective, serial killer-esque story to dig into. Let me know when this one goes up

A little cliche as a movie idea....but for an SRP, I think this would be great!

It's an idea I had a long time ago, but had forgotten. Your mention of the Powers thing brought it back to mind. I'm not familiar with Powers, but I took it as psychic powers and it reminded me of this. The twist, of course, is in who the killer really is.
