Too much money?

I've noticed a LOT of stories here-including my own, oops-have main focus characters who are sufficiently independently wealthy to be able to afford whatever they need, or think they need, to be happy.
I grew up dirt poor, my dad changing oil on rich people's cars, my mom doing their laundry. If I wanted an allowance, it wasn't there so I delivered news papers starting at the age of 10. I spent 20 years in the military because I didn't have a rich mommy and daddy to pay my way through college and I wasn't stupid enough to take on massive student loan debt. While serving my country I was impoverished and was eligible for 'government cheese' When I got out I used my GI bill to get my degree and for a few shining years I made "Good money" but my injuries caught up with me and thanks to my service I am now over 100% disabled, and classified as home bound and 'chronically unemployable" and living off what the VA hands out after their orgies and spending sprees.

There's a lot I can't do, should my characters be nearly wheelchair bound because I am? Do they need to scratch for a living because I have to? No. I write erotic fantasy, my characters do what I want to do, and they end up rich, but each and every one of them EARNS that money.

Then your characters and plots are all the same.

Please note, my offering for discussion was not critical of rich protagonists per se. I was only suggesting that many of us use it as a lazy way to resolve story conflicts, rather than being creative and coming up with interesting solutions that don't involve tossing bundles of cash at them. If you want to write a story about a MC who happens to be wealthy, by all means do so, but beware of making that their answer to every problem they run into.

For my first couple stories, I just had characters with generic office jobs. When I started my first series, I honestly did just have the guy be wealthy to deal with a lot of issues. Part if it was also to write what you know, and I work in finance/accounting. So, I just said the guy got rich with his own business. In some ways, yeah, it can definitely be a cop out. I've read plenty of good stories about characters with money problems, so it can definitely be done. Do I regret my choice? Eh, not really. The story is fun to write.

And nothing wrong with that. Have fun writing, entertain some folks [maybe not all of them, but that's par for this venue], try to learn from the experience so you get better at it.

My poor rich characters, all of which had to learn that money can’t buy true love, nor happiness.

Yeah, you definitely can't please everyone! Not even close. All you can do is try and write what you'd enjoy reading. I think another reason for the characters being wealthy is that it helps the fantasy. You want to insert yourself into the story. Who wants to be reminded of all the stress of wondering if you can pay bills? You get to fantasize about being the rich guy who gets lots of sex.
