Trump Captures Nicolas Maduro

I’m thrilled that Maduro is gone. So are the people of Venezuela, by all accounts. That's a good thing.

I’m worried, given the historical precedents in China, Cuba, Iran, Nicaragua, Syria, and other countries, that what comes after him might be worse.

The US recognized President of Venezuela is Maria Machado. Presumably she's waiting in the wings for Trump to signal the all clear so she can begin her leadership of her country.

Since she was lawfully elected, one could believe that she wouldn't/couldn't be any worse than Maduro.

What is the constitutional authority for this? Where do we get the authority to enforce US law in foreign countries?

The AUMF (Authorization to Use Military Force).

Isn't Congress supposed to declare war?

Trump has 60 days to request a declaration of War from Congress. Since the shooting is over, I'm going to go out on a limb and say he doesn't need to.

Nation building is always a bad idea.

We're not nation building, we're enforcing the law. Maduro was a wanted international narcotics trafficker who is under indictment and will be charged and prosecuted according to the law. What Venezuela does next is up to Venezuela once it is safe for the US to withdraw.

I know they plan to have an election down the road, but why put Maduro's VP in charge (even temporarily)? (BTW, his name doesn't sound very Venezuelan.) Why not the winner of the election?

Because the VP knows who all the players are in order for the government to function.

If we’re justifying it under the Monroe Doctrine, when are we going in to topple the Cuban regime?

WTF does this have to do with Venezuela? Unless you're trying to link Cuba to narco-terrorism.

If we’re justifying it under international law and/or claiming authority to enforce US law against foreign regimes, when are we going in to arrest Xi Jinping?

China's President doesn't have an indictment against him. So what you're doing is conflating political disagreement as equating to terrorism.

If “we’re running Venezuela” now, does that mean we run Citgo? Is that what this is about?

No.

Who's paying for this?

Venezuela.

I hope this turns out to be a short-term thing like Reagan's intervention in Grenada or LBJ's intervention in the Dominican Republic, not another endless war like Iraq or Afghanistan.

The shooting is over. All that's left is the administration and caretaking until the handing off of the government back to the Venezuelan people.

Felonious Trump takes over the territory of other mob bosses around the world as if it's all his. He has one of the most, if not the most, lethal military, and he knows it, and he uses that power like a mobster from NY that he is.

Well done, trump! Lay the groundwork in the 2020 indictment and scoop up the oil grab in 2026. Way to play the long game, sir!

(or at least those pulling the strings)

No way! There are too many Venezuelans who still BELIEVE in the Bolivarian Revolution enough to fight for it!
My little brother spent his military career killing those 'revolutionaries.' Not in Venezuela specifically, but they're spread throughout Central and South America. They use their revolutionary zeal as an excuse for their criminal activities.

But he doesn't get to decide who is a "declared terrorist" and neither does a grand jury. Not even you believe Maduro is a terrorist or even a drug trafficker.
Yes he does. He's the CinC. He has Article II and statutory power to do so,

We have had dozens of armed conflicts in our history, and Congress has only declared war for five of them. The authority goes all the way back to Jefferson.

Another world monopoly piece for the map..

Stupid fucking MAGAtards like Reichguide have been swallowing fake news for so long they have no idea what truth is anymore.
You are too ignorant, and likely too young, to possess even a working grasp of the law, American history, or the political realities of the present moment. What you offer instead is confidence unburdened by knowledge, opinion masquerading as insight, and slogans recycled as thought. You mistake exposure for understanding and volume for authority, and then wonder why reality refuses to conform to your expectations. This isn’t a debate; it’s Literotica cosplay, and you’ve been stripped of your Tutu and all you have left are your pointe shoes.

Venezuela wasn’t a war, it was an arrest. Sure, a little air support was needed to clear the avenue of entry, but at the end of the day, it was less about firefights and more about handcuffs. A surgical strike followed by a polite, if heavily armed, invitation to surrender. After the swift exit, the Venezuelan people danced in the streets, probably more from oppressive relief than rhythm. Meanwhile, the American left, dripping with hatred for Trump and everything America was founded on, rushed to Maduro’s defense with the kind of theatrical wailing and collective bladder failure they reserve for their more unhinged emotional defeats.

We're occupying their country.
Maybe not fully with troops on the ground, but we're running it.

And troops will be there shortly.

The mental gymnastics you are going through right now...
