Happy Monday. Slept okay, mostly. There are two empty boxes in here and each has a cat. That damn kitten is wondering where hers is She'll likely be on the desk here any minute.

We're back to a/c usage for the next couple of days. The it'll act a bit more like Autumn, even though it's 10 days out yet, more-r-less.

Coffee. Trying a new grind tomorrow. Hope we like it.

At the job. The "other crew" showed up sometime yesterday afternoon - with a whopping two workers. This guy is some kind of pendejo. Chingandos huevones. But, being as this is a Kinder Gentler company, I don't get to say that, much less to grab his larynx and pull it out and fuck the bloody hole.

Two good workers are worth six who spend more time standing around.
There was a lot of stupid in my younger days, I think I will put a Post-it note on my mirror to remind me of that, but I'm still using Tylenol today. Next weekend will end the gardens but I already recruited help and delegated some of the other work so I don't do a repeat of last Saturday.

Yes, two are better than 6=0, but they need 5-6 good workers. This is a matter of physics. Drywall mud has to have a chance to dry, and it has to be on the wall so that it can dry where it needs to be.

I started interviews for temp workers today. They will be needed 8-10 weeks and the unemployment/welfare employment office sent them. They are everything I have come to expect from people forced to apply for jobs they don't want.

One of my favorites was the temp I sent back early (for being a trifling wanker) and then he called me back to tell me I had fucked him on his time when I told what time I'd pay him (more than he deserved) when I dismissed him. Then there were the ones who forged another hour on the time sheet in a different pen after I had rounded them up an hour out of the goodness of my coal black heart.

Wat has come to loathe temp "workers." Most merely convert oxygen to CO2.

It was just after dawn in Woody Creek, Colo., when the first plane hit the World Trade Center in New York City on Tuesday morning, and as usual I was writing about sports. But not for long. Football suddenly seemed irrelevant, compared to the scenes of destruction and utter devastation coming out of New York on TV.

Even ESPN was broadcasting war news. It was the worst disaster in the history of the United States, including Pearl Harbor, the San Francisco earthquake and probably the Battle of Antietam in 1862, when 23,000 were slaughtered in one day.

The Battle of the World Trade Center lasted about 99 minutes and cost 20,000 lives in two hours (according to unofficial estimates as of midnight Tuesday). The final numbers, including those from the supposedly impregnable Pentagon, across the Potomac River from Washington, likely will be higher. Anything that kills 300 trained firefighters in two hours is a world-class disaster.

And it was not even Bombs that caused this massive damage. No nuclear missiles were launched from any foreign soil, no enemy bombers flew over New York and Washington to rain death on innocent Americans. No. It was four commercial jetliners.

They were the first flights of the day from American and United Airlines, piloted by skilled and loyal U.S. citizens, and there was nothing suspicious about them when they took off from Newark, N.J., and Dulles in D.C. and Logan in Boston on routine cross-country flights to the West Coast with fully-loaded fuel tanks -- which would soon explode on impact and utterly destroy the world-famous Twin Towers of downtown Manhattan's World Trade Center. Boom! Boom! Just like that.

The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. Osama bin Laden may be a primitive "figurehead" -- or even dead, for all we know -- but whoever put those All-American jet planes loaded with All-American fuel into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon did it with chilling precision and accuracy. The second one was a dead-on bullseye. Straight into the middle of the skyscraper.

Nothing -- even George Bush's $350 billion "Star Wars" missile defense system -- could have prevented Tuesday's attack, and it cost next to nothing to pull off. Fewer than 20 unarmed Suicide soldiers from some apparently primitive country somewhere on the other side of the world took out the World Trade Center and half the Pentagon with three quick and costless strikes on one day. The efficiency of it was terrifying.

We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say. Maybe Afghanistan, maybe Pakistan or Iraq, or possibly all three at once. Who knows? Not even the Generals in what remains of the Pentagon or the New York papers calling for WAR seem to know who did it or where to look for them.

This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed -- for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won't hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force.

Good luck. He is in for a profoundly difficult job -- armed as he is with no credible Military Intelligence, no witnesses and only the ghost of Bin Laden to blame for the tragedy.

OK. It is 24 hours later now, and we are not getting much information about the Five Ws of this thing.
The numbers out of the Pentagon are baffling, as if Military Censorship has already been imposed on the media. It is ominous. The only news on TV comes from weeping victims and ignorant speculators.

The lid is on. Loose Lips Sink Ships. Don't say anything that might give aid to The Enemy.

Hunter was weird, and he could be an idiot. Posted for posterior.

We've had some good temps, usually older people who are looking for some extra bill or holiday money. When I find them I tend to give them a big bonus at the end of their job and call them back as long as I can. Sadly my last two found permanent jobs and I'm back to searching. We may have a keeper though. She's 63, hates babysitting and no one wants to hire her because of her age. Her biggest flaw is that she's got a mouth on her but we all have that around here, my concern is that she won't be able to work the computer system. She's not tech literate, so I'm waiting on my floor minions to make the final call.

Wat got a visit from his contractor not-buddy. He started making excuses - fucking again!!! Wat took him down a few rungs because fuck him - without saying it. We don't get to do that here. So everything is pushed back a week and here's saying that they still won't quite be done. No fucking supervision is the issue. It was on the other job, too.

Happy Tuesday!!! Slept okay but woke up before the alarm. Day #8 work day in a row. Looks like cooler and a bit of rain tomorrow. We may have Wat's boss today. We'll see. He may be pissed at the other job. Generally, we're having some supervision issues as it is. That seems to be part and parcel of this shit anyway. Too many contractors and not enough accountability.

The new coffee is adequate. Nothing special.

Your ole Johnny Savage has been busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest lately. With a three week break for a trip to It-lay next month, there's no let up through January.

Sounds like White Girl problems all around.

Had the boss here this morning. We're going to replace this sub. Problem is, we're still in the river and we need to get this floor to the other side.

Home. Doing the in-grazing thing. Made a casserole (no, not weasel) on Sunday. Apparently, the only limiting factor is one's imagination. Or rather, the lack of one.

The front is slowly blowing in. It will be cooler tomorrow.

And friggin rain again.

Our rain seems to have already blown through. There was a t-storm as I was falling asleep.

It is not that anger and desire are inherently evil or that we should feel ashamed when they arise. It is a matter of seeing them as the delusions that they are: distorted conceptions that paint a false picture of reality. They are negative because they lead to unhappiness and confusion.

Happy Wednesday!!! Slept okay. The usual morning ritual is out of the way, or done, or whatever wording is appropriate. The old cat decided to come out of his box, and he's got a cough. Sometimes he does this and I wonder if he's starting the process of checking out. And then he's okay and he's pleasant and alert when he's awake even if he does sleep all day and night. More people should be as pleasant as he is.

More drywall at work. They may be close to done on the back half. I hope that El Jefe didn't tell them yet that they're going to lose this work.

Let me have coffee first . . . .
