Looking at two large apartment buildings under construction over the last week, the carpenters, painters, drywallers, bricklayers, concrete workers and site workers are almost completely immigrants. Gringos don't seem to want the work, or if they are working in those trades, it's as managers - someone to go to the weekly progress meetings, to deal with ownership and upper management, and to keep the paperwork monster satisfied. The mechanical trades - plumbing, HVAC and electrical - are still primarily gringos, for the time being.


Sputnik I terrified the West, especially the US, and we noticed that we had a lot of liberal arts degrees and fewer science and engineering degrees. We got better at it, and then we seem to have slipped again. I suspect that the dumbing down of public education has had more than a little to do with that.

Right. In Cali we have a deal with the devil: the right supports the big agro growers in protecting the immigrants;
the left needs the immigrants as a constituency.

You're welcome. Today is the third day of Xmas, I presume. More birds that True Love gives to us. I'm watching a documentary about Evolution and Life and its history here on the third rock from the sun. It's brought up questions about extinction events, the last one (if we go with the model of 5 events) being the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. It's nice to remind ourselves that we are basically insignificant when it comes to that kind of thing. Powerless. Acceptance. Not a damned thing we can do about it.


Some of us may be a bit more in touch with our Neanderthal DNA than others.

The Four Noble Truths:
