Weird and Discouraging Voting and Comments

How in the world were you able to receive a zero score (since there's no such thing here--the lowest actual computing score is 1)?

But I know what you mean. I have a couple of loyal 1 voters--no doubt voting hurt feelings from the forum rather than anything to do with the story itself. I figure ignoring them and their handiwork is the best revenge--and then making money off the story elsewhere.

It's the standard confusion of comment thermometer vs. voting. The comments list a 1 vote as 00%

There is definitely something wacky about the voting. One of my first posts actually lost 4 votes in about 2 hours. This caused my score to drop almost 4 tenths of a point. How does one lose votes? It makes me wonder what is going on . Has anyone else seen this happen?

That would be the sweeps. The website runs a program every so often that removes votes considered illegitimate. The only known criteria for this is multiple votes from the same IP, but there are probably more.

Thanks for the insights

It has been good to read this thread, helpful to me since I am in the midst of posting my first story and considering quitting because of the negative comments. The story is Adam's Journey, under the Loving Wives category, and yes it has cuckold, swinging, and exhibitionist themes and I intend for it to venture elsewhere. It's a long and meandering story with a lot of character development, and the responses that said the early chapters were too short or had other legitimate issues were helpful, and I made some adjustments.

The other posts, the haters and those obsessed with AIDS and other std's, (invariably brave anonymous responders) are the people you talk about here - why do they bother to read the story, if in fact they do?? I deleted the stupid and more obnoxious comments, left the helpful ones, and turned off the public comments section.
I'm still debating about continuing the story, although it appears a couple thousand people are still following it.
Anyhow, thanks for the notes above, very helpful!

Same Problem - another country

Hi pervinplainpackage,

I know your problem very well. It's the same in Germany. My stories started with initial votes 4.78 and then ... down ... down ... to 2.00. It's real frustrating. I think I know why JPB doesn't publish his stories at Lit anymore.

A lot of sick freaks, some call them trolls deliberately vote stories down because of their sick incest and rape interests or their hypocritical minds. I know it's an american problem weather I read the moral codes of your country.:D

Loving wives-, especially cuckold-stories are always a target for trolls.

I don't like cuckold-stories but I don't vote them down. I just don't read them. Very simple. No harm done.

If you can live without public comments and votes disable them in your Literotica Control Panel or delete your stories.

Sincere regards

Nucleus
*fixed coupling from vote and comment could be a solution of this problem

This guy is apparently one of the Loving Wives trolls.

Hey, this is the idiot who basically threatened me in the comments to my last story. I reported him but haven't heard anything back.

I don't pay much attention to the voting because I do not consider myself a "writer". I'd like to be one day, and hopefully, with the stuff I've been putting up here maybe I can actually become one.

Right now, I write what interests me and don't give a flip about what others think. The one thing that I would really like and don't get much of are actual critiques. Even if they hate the story, I'd like to hear what they think could have been done to improve it. Unfortunately, the majority of comments come from people who don't realize characters in stories are not actual people in real life. Mmmmm after reading that last sentence, maybe it is a compliment.

Negative comments don't bother me so much, but the personally insulting ones do. This is of course simply because of the G.I.F.T (or Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory.)

Normal Person + Anonimity = Total Fuckwad.

I delete personally insulting comments, but other than that, hey, if some people get their rocks off on saying the story sucks and is too long, or too boring, whatever floats their boat.

I had one commenter state that I "lost him" with the long drama stuff, then he ended his comment by saying he was going to keep reading.

Okay?

But that's fine. Personally I find the obsession with the votes to be irritating anyways (and I do it myself, bah!). The limitation of the H meter and the mathematical inequality it introduces are not great ways to measure a story. (Seriously, how does it make sense that if one guy votes a 1, you'd have to get 7 people voting you a 5 just to get your 4.50 mark back?)

I would much rather see a system where it shows you how many people gave you a 1, how many a 2 etc. Then you can see how many 4 or 5 votes you got on your story, and base your judgment of that. Once a story receives a certain number of fours and fives, you give it an H. That way a single troll can never make a difference on whether a story is hot. But that's been a debate on this site for as long as I can remember.

Anyways, my advice to all is, enjoy the positive comments and ignore the non-constructive negative ones. (however, DO pay attention to the negative ones that tell you how to get better. Those are your best friends.)

In the end, you're writing for yourself, right? :)

Haters...

Pervin…

I find that most of my stories have three surges of voting. The first surge (from my fans, I assume) usually shoot my stories up to the 4.6-4.7 range. Then there is the second surge (haters, I assume) which drop my stories back down to the 4.5 range. Then there is the last surge (actually more of a trickle than a surge) where the rating will remain around the 4.5 range or slowly rise back up to the 4.6 or 4.7 range.

I am truly baffled by the haters. They are like the teetotalers who go into bars to rant and rave. If yah don’t want to drink, don’t. But don’t mess with my right to do so…

For my social comment on haters, read my tale about Snarf and Sugly!

Baronde, you have many more stories than me, so you no doubt have this tracking of your scores thing down to a science.

Still, I have mine down pretty well. It's certainly changed, though, of late.

See, when I first started, for about my first dozen stories or so, it would go like this...

The story would get posted. It would jump straight up to between a 4.75 and a 4.9. Once it would receive something along the lines of twenty or so votes it would appear at the top of the Top Lists category, usually for Exhibitionism. It would sit there, for about a week, along with three or four more of my stories. One story would pull some of the others up too, and I'd often end up with four stories included in the top five.

I had a nice roll going.

Inevitably, though, people would decide to knock me down the list, and my entire catalogue of stories would get hit with a burst of 1 scores. The entire lot would suddenly get knocked from the top of the list.

Over the next month or so, my stories would gradually climb back to the top. Once there, the highest ranked ones would immediately get hit with another series of 1 scores, but this time it would only be for the ones at the very top.

That's how it used to work, anyway.

Now?

:D

I'll post a story. Within ten minutes it'll get hit by an immediate deluge of horrible scores. My haters, ever vigilant, immediately bury it. At the same time, they'll also recall my catalogue and proceed to again attack any of my stories which had managed to get back up to the 4.85 range. As long as it's only around a 4.78, they seem to be cool with it. They just won't let it get all the back to #1. Whenever that happens, wooo, the 1 scores come out in force.

In the meantime, none of my new stories are ever able to do much more than a 4.60, and even that takes a long time. They have to go through the initial barrage of hater votes, and once the haters are mollified then the story can begin its gradual ascent...

I know though that I won't ever be allowed to maintain a ranking that threatens the #1 spot. It happened again last week, where one of my stories had snuck back up to a 4.85, and a #1 ranking.

Bam. The next day, it got shot down to a 4.79.

Ever and anon...

I got a weird comment just a few hours after posting my latest story, calling me a "super intelligent termite" and an "asshole". Strangeness knows no bounds. *Shrug*.

Just throwing it out there

I have never had a story on this site, and don't think I will ever have the urge to do so any time soon. (that would involve way to much thought unscrambling)

The comments at the end of a story don't just affect the writers-- I admit as a reader to have scrolled down to the last page of a story just to read the comments before settling in and enjoying the story.

I can't believe that people harass the writers like this thread has described. Why? The writers here pour their minds into the lovely stories they post.

Is there an option to turn off the comments completely once you post a story? Personally, I think stories should have links to this "Story Feedback" forum thingy at the bottom instead of comments and each story could have a thread of its own.

I think the anonymity of the comment box is a breeding ground for negative comments. Even with the alt profiles in the threads, I think the change would be for the better.

I have to say I thought it a bit weird, in my novel Gifted, the one chapter that got the highest rating had the least sex in it. It was mostly about a day in football tryouts. The one real sex scene in it was a dream that one of the characters has about having sex in the locker room.

But I have also noticed the change in voting in the last year. It is very strange...

When I post a story, I know some people will like it, others won't get it, other's will be offended, and so on. I'm just trying to write something I can be proud of.

I've just posted my seventh story and so far the reaction has been good. After watching my other stories go up above the 4.5 range and then get blasted by just enough 1 votes to remove the H banner, I'm convinced that some readers purposely drive down the scores of successful stories. My guess is that some writers feel a competitive urge to lower the rank of what they view as their competition.
I have not received negative comments on the content of my stories, but I did receive insults from an anonymous reader complaining about three typos in an 8500 word story. I felt that was a bit much. My view is that the complainers are in fear of reprisals against their own works. That is why they remain anonymous

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have some really bad comments on my stories. All the comments are either 100% or 0%, usually followed by some ridiculous bile. What gets me is that I posted an 8 part story and people seemed to keep reading just so they could vent! Another reader even posted about the stupidity of the trolls who keep reading.

Having said that, I do think that maybe Literotica should think about having a specific section for Femdom, because as it is my stories all end up in BDSM, and the thing some people have a problem with is that Femdom/Cuckoldry can lead to certain acts which some people think are going too far, ie - eating another mans creampie, or 'forced' gay oral or anal.

I can sort of see their point, but to my mind it was fairly obvious where my story was headed.

I must say that I find the email feedback a lot better than the posted comments, although my favourite comment is on one of my latest stories, where the poster said that I made him throw up for 10 mins.
Hahahaha.

Seems some readers have nothing better to do than pick up on some minor little thing and troll about it. I've recently got it on spelling. I use English, the reader was apparently American and failed to recognise there is a whole world out there that isn't.

After some lovely support here I now consider anonymous trolls as valauble cannon fodder :D

I've been lurking here since the beginning.
But I can't be silent any longer - this is getting really annoying.

Frankly it pisses me off to see all the negative comments that aren't feedback at all, but just bitching about the type of story. Why bother to read it in the first place?

I have seen this in the Taboo category, the gay and lesbian categories, and the nonconsent stories.
If you DON'T like it, DON'T read it.
Simple.

The worst BY FAR, though, seems to be the loving wives category.
Basically, if you are NOT O.K. with, adultery, cheating, cuckoldry, hotwifing, swapping, OR swinging, this is not the category for you.
If you DON'T like it, DON'T read it.

How many times do the writers need to put in disclaimers? How many times does it need to be said?
If you DON'T like it, DON'T read it.

I agree

I watch my viewings and my votes and they don't match. How can I have more votes than views? I have seen my views disappear and decline and wonder how that can happen. I think someone has access to this site and enjoys posting their own agendas. How else can all of us be feeling so confused by the weird voting. The comments left are another issue all together. I added up the number of views for all my stories and it totalled 702,000+ just two months ago, I did it again after a writer submitted a list of story ratings and my views DROPPED by over 1200. Now call me crazy, but I don't have any way to adjust the scores or viewings, so it leads me to believe someone is doing it in an admin. capacity

Odd, now it seems that there is a battle between site administrators and someone who is spamming the voting. The vote number goes down (admins taking out false votes?), and the average score goes up, then the vote number goes back up and the average score goes down (hater with an agenda?). Looks like it may be one hater with nothing better to do and not a systematic issue across the community.

I guess I just have to be less anal retentive about the voting. All I intended was to check to see if the story had been posted....

This same argument has been going on forever on Lit.
Cuckold stories always get the worst of the "I'm more Holy than God" crowd beating you up. The Loving Wives Catagory is NOT for the faint of heart to post in.
Also, the votes going up and down has been going on forever. It doesn't mean anything. Actually I don't thing votes really mean anything anyway. I like to ignore them. They are only the subjective rant of the unwashed. Views are more important, in my opinion. They show how many people have bothered to take the time to give you a look. With only five stories posted you can't say you are a popular, well read author on here. You would do better to start hanging out in The Author's Hanout. Make yourself known. Insult people, whatever - but make your face known. Both your views and votes will increase.

So, just how is it you have a join date of 1969? I mean, wow. I thought Al Gore invented the internet. Did he do it back then? And that Laurel and Manu, they must have had the very first internet web-site!

When I signed up, I don't recall a place where I could tell my join date. I obviously overlooked something.

Glad to see you still around! :rose:

As for the views and votes and scores, I just wonder why my member page never, ever matches the lists, and I'm talking even when the internal numbers stay the same for weeks. I've been told the member numbers are the more accurate, but it's the external that seem to shift regularly. Just makes a girl go, "Hmmm."

I do admit I enjoy pissing off the Trolls and getting into heated debates with them. I watch my scores go down, down, down but I don't care about little red"H"'s and whether I have a score above 4.50. I love the personal feedback from readers who write me and their own love of what I wrote and how it seemed to strike a chord with them. I notice the language most Trolls use and the spelling and grammar mistakes and know they're low-brows who couldn't put 10 words in a sentence and have it make sense, not to mention 8 of the words are spelled wrong. It's just fun to have an anti-fan club as well as the readers who like what I write. As Jenny points out, if they're reading me, I'm getting noticed and most people look in the feedback comments most commented stories and want to know what's up with the story. Any publicity is good publicity.
