I remember watching a program about 12 years ago where this subject was discussed and there was some interesting studies done and being done that pointed that in many countries the public acceptance of shemales is still taboo but - and this deserved a laugh - the actual penetration (pun intended) of such individuals in the "regular" society was, by far, deeper than one could easily suspect.

This was pointed to the stress that extremely patriarchal still puts in men having to marry, with homosexuals being seen as aberrations; it was said that at the time, Italy had a concerning number of violent incidents with homosexuals - male and female - with aggressions in broad day light being common. A scene with a Gay Pride Parade being assaulted by a mob was shown.

But, strangely, it was becoming more and more frequent men to marry shemales. In some interviews, these men stated that they did not consider themselves gay, considered their wives true women and most of them even had already adopted children and lived the life of a regular family, with no one even suspecting they were married with such unique women.

One of the scholars behind the study, theorized that this was a phenomenon prone to become more prevalent as long as (Italian) society refused to accept different sexual options and forced men and women to "fit" into predefined sexual standards.
The men taking part in the test, although married with shemales, were mostly homophobic, regarding homosexual men as freaks and/or aberrations and lesbians as women that needed a "real man" (whatever they mean with that...) yet they all had psychological traits that indicated tendency to homosexual option or - in a slightly scarier note - sexual identity malformation.

I don't know any transgendered people IRL, so what I know is what i've seen in documentaries and yes, what I have encountered in porn.
