Einstein himself explaining relativity.

"When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity."

My daughter is German. I am reading a German kid book to her daughter, and daughter walks in. "Are U speaking Chinese to my kid?"

Harsh!

Back when I was learning Mandarin, I had a conversation with another learner. A native speaker nearby couldn't understand either of us but we understood one another fine because we both spoke the same variety of mangled Mandarin.

I wouldn't say comfortably, but at least I think I know what I'm supposed to be doing and from here it should just be a matter of practice. Though at some point I need to find a native speaker and check that I'm doing it right!

I can usually hear German umlauts, but anything past that is stretching it. I had four years of Mandarin and I never really got the the hang of a tonal language.

Yay! I'm also doing German, but so far it's almost all been from the app and by listening. The closest I've come to conversation is this thread and since OP never replied, I don't know how bad I was :)

But family members have a German visitor coming to stay, so perhaps I can co-opt her for conversation practice some time.

Well I'm one of Lit's resident linguists as well as a native R Roller, so let me know if I can help you. :)

I'm doing Mandarin as well. I've done it for a year before, but it was at a somewhat leisurely pace. Now I'm learning it a bit more systematically with a better teacher, but I still wish the pace was a bit faster. I don't have big problems hearing the tones or even reproducing them if I see the tonal pattern written down. I do have a hard time remembering the words with the correct tone, though. I can often remember the pronunciation and how it's written, but the tone escapes me. I've started to color code my flashcards and hope that'll help me.

Getting to have a conversation in German is a rare treat for me these days. I hope you get to practice your skills! :cattail:

Watching the posts of Bramby, Blue, and Primalex...sticks fingers in my ears and squeezes eyes shut

La, la, la, la, la,la....

Interestingly enough the recent posts about math and computer science make me wanna stick my fingers down my pants.

Science.

In set theory, the = symbol indicates that two sets have the exact same membership, not just that they overlap.

Hence, the statement "P = NP" implies that ALL NP problems, including but not limited to NP-complete, are P. If you don't see why that would be a big deal, perhaps one of your colleagues can help.

You wrote:
"if anybody ever finds a constructive proof that P = NP"

The proof has to be P = NP-complete.
Your feeble = symbol distraction does not change this.

This made me smile because I just finished reading this: http://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-have-concluded-that-the-universe-shouldn-t-really-exist

Of course there are several other articles on the same subject from the past several years.

It's kinda sad that a Kardashian fart gets more airtime than science. There are really big debates why the universe does not behave the way it should. Basically two fractions exist - one who believes the equations are right and that we just need to find the one element where everything starts to make sense. Those are the guys who desperately try to find that element and shoot particles at other particles. And the other fraction, who believes that the equations are not completely right, they have just been good enough for centuries on Earth - once you take a more mathematical approach, where you are not limited to your three dimensions, everything actually starts to make sense, even why the fuck quantum entanglement is possible at all.

Anyway, my bigger pet peeve is that people completely ignore the theory in big bang theory. Scientists observe and look for an explanation that covers all facts. That's it. Nobody knows if the result is actually the truth - most often the distinction does not even matter.

And the big bang theory is not even a very exciting one.
"Oh look, our universe consists of mass that is moving in all directions. Hm, when did I see something like that before? Yes, an explosion. Hey, that's what must have happened!"

We are still merely more than crows who have figured out a lot of tricks to predict stuff.

Australian politics. Google "#citizenship7" for the details, but in brief, the government just lost its majority because our deputy Prime Minister didn't realise he was a New Zealand citizen and hence ineligible to stand for election.

For once a change in schedule works in my favor. I'm relieved beyond belief!

Thank goodness for eggplant “crust” pizza. A highlight in my personal food desert.

Some non-PC pranks, an annual occurrence for the end of the school year leading into exams, by some girls from a local high school, y13 here, so 17-18 yo's.

They have for a number of years riden motorbikes through the grounds of the local boys school, topless. Unfortunately this time they ran over one of the boys, causing some media interest. The boy is okay, the parents perhaps less amused!

What fun kids!

Playing with grandson...

My daughter says, "do I have time for a shower?" Sure; the boy is just about to walk, and a fast mover.

Being able to tell workmates: "hey, you know that problem you're always wrestling with? It comes up in a completely different field and they already came up with some solutions for it".

("also, this is why it's a good thing you paid to send me overseas last year, you should do that more often!")

My partner gets a few bucks doing surveys - brand awareness, that sort of thing.

One of the recent ones had a question: "List the age and gender of all children living with you". There is no option for "none".

She wrote in to let them know there was a problem with the form. Response: "If the exact answer you want isn't available, please choose the options that fit you best".

So I guess we have to decide what sort of imaginary child or children suits us best. Any recommendations?

I vote for a boy and a girl, 92 and 89.
