Realizing that it’s okay to dislike people who call lightning bugs “fireflies”.

Seeing a beautiful cookie and braving my own nerves aka possibly having a death wish.

This Twitter post - hilarious and accurate

"My wife just put her ice cold hands on my back so now I'm marching towards the wall to kill Jon Snow."

They ARE fireflies!
"lightning bugs" is so uncouth.

So, how about glow worms? Or are they something else entirely?

Personally glow worm makes me think of the green toy I wanted as a kid and never got. Thank you so much, mom. I also never got my own Nintendo, and that's why I'm forever and ever doomed to lose whenever I play Super Mario with someone. Thank you so very much, mom.

Glow worm! That brings back memories. I think I actually had one in the 80s although I can't quite remember.

Oh, and I'm such a big kid that I got myself a Mini Super Nintendo last year - preloaded with all the classic games.
Best. Thing. Ever.

I read recently that this distinction usually shows southern USA origins rather than northern. I grew up just a bit south of the Canadian border and I remember hearing both terms pretty regularly.

I grew up in rural Indiana and probably heard lightning bug more than firefly, but they feel pretty interchangeable to me. Either way we would catch them and keep them in mason jars, which when I look back on it was basically murder. Sorry, bugs!

I remember the Glo Worm from when I was a kid. Wanted one so bad but my parents wouldn't get one.

I was also desperate for a Nintendo but they wouldn't get that either, fearing it would rot our brains. I managed to rot my brain just fine anyway, and when Nintendo released the classic mini a couple years ago you can bet your sweet ass I used some of the money I have from my Very Adult Salary to go out and buy one. Suck on THAT, Mom and Dad!

Well, according to the first study that popped up as the result of a vague google search ( in a survey taken with 10,000 Americans ) 39.8% use both terms interchangeably. Whereas 30.4% say firefly, versus 29.1% who use lightning bug. Oddly enough, .02% of people refer to them as “ peenie wallie “... Which now has me questioning the legitimacy of this survey.

Also, the term “ Firefly “ first appeared in the 1650s, and “ Lightning Bug “ didn’t make an appearance until the late 1770s.

So, you Lightning Bug users have fun being wrong. :D

That a fact

The lightning bugs in my yard all want to mate with my table umbrella, which Necro fixed up with teeny lights.

This thread made me laugh. And I have an owl city song for you Farawyn.

Also its lightning bugs in the south ... better than love bugs by a country mile...

Today I learned that among a group of recently-married people, nearly a quarter of them had banned The Chicken Dance song from the playlist used at their reception. I always thought the whole idea of a wedding reception was to generate a lifetime’s worth of embarrassing moments for the guests to be remembered by. And what better fertilizer to grow such memories than a wedding bar and The Chicken Dance?

Small cat boy climbing under the covers to cuddle and purr at me. Also, co-workers having my back.
