What makes a good 750 Word Story

I had it drummed into my head in journalism class that a writer has to answer the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when and why) within the first 500 words. In the case of erotica, anything extra can be spent answering the H for how without getting too clinical.

Journalism is fantastic experience. The focus on the 5 W's is always useful, for any kind of writing. A key element of journalism is focusing on what's important, and that idea helps for writing erotica or any other sort of writing.

I wrote for the newspaper in high school, and I once attended a journalism conference. One of the speakers gave an instructive story about highlighting what's important. A young newspaper writer wrote a story about a fire and started the article with what he thought was a bang-up opening paragraph that was something like, "God watched over the town of Whitmore as its buildings burned to the ground." The editor looked at the story and told the writer, "Forget the fire. You should have interviewed God."

That's the whole reason the challenge exists, it's a writing exercise for writers, it's not even for the readers.

Agreed. Which is why I recommend authors not focus too much on how to write these stories the "right" way and instead take the opportunity to experiment, to get bold and weird.
