I'll join The in warning against AVG, it has some nice fiddly bits but you'd do just as well if not better by installing xp. Ive had no trouble so far what with the fire wall etc and built in anti-virus. Only cost me £40 as well at a 'puter fair. OEM but what the hell I did oem. Shouldn't be no trouble at all for an engineer/mathematician.

SF - No worries, but after you install it go visit that other link, Panda's ActiveScan. That'll scan your PC from the web and clear up anything that's inside AVG itself, if there is one.

Earl, did you download AVG from the Grisoft site itself?

Dear Gauchie,
That ain't true. My approach to computers is completely from the other end. Most people start and end with knowing how to use software. I'm no better at than than the average guy on the street.

I have worked from the opposite end. Theoretical and mathematical aspects which enable computers to compute (e.g. run software). The kind of stuff that will someday allow a CPU to be so small you can't see it.

My router with firewall built in is the damn best buy I ever did. Since I got a trojan opening up my puter to be a porn ftp about a year ago I kinda made sure it should never happen again. Got firewall router, paid hard earned cash on antivirus, shoved Outlook and read a book on what to do.

And I didn't even get to keep the porn.
