Writer's Frustration with Morality Police

Am I wrong to be a little peeved after spending quite a bit of time crafting a story about a sexy married woman and a one-time extramarital rendezvous, just to be trashed by readers offended by what the character does? My story seems to have received a wildly polarized response - some loved it, and others loathed it because of the adultery undertones. This website is a playground for sexual fantasy. In some circles it would be considered adultery just for a married person to read any of these stories. I really didn't expect to find such backlash in this (presumably) accepting community.

STORY: Jennifer's Secret

http://www.literotica.com/s/jennifers-secret

I've had positive responses to the few things I've posted here, but also a few negatives. The negative one that irritated me nost was the anonymous one that said something like "I didn't like it". So, why didn't you like it? Give me some actual feedback.

The fact is, it's like the mantra that politicians have to live by: You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time. My purpose in writing anything is to express my own feelings and thoughts. It's not a commercial enterprise and I don't nmake a red cent from it. So, if it makes some people happy or aroused or makes some people think, good. If others don't like it or it disgusts them, so be it and click to another story. However, to any who may at some point give me feedback on a story, if you don't like it, at least tell me why so that I can perhaps learn something potentially helpful.

The OP's point about the community here is something I see, and don't quite understand, myself.

It's Literotica, the forum and the site are directly, specifically themed erotica, writing, all kinds of themes of a sexual - and sexually deviant - nature, everything from incest to rape to adultery to alien sex...I'd have thought everyone here who bothered getting an account would "get it" to begin with but I've read many threads here in my short time and inevitably out pop the members protesting various sexual behaviors, taking it personally, harping about what they think is appropriate and what they find offensive, and then starting some kind of argument on the merits or pitfalls of some sexual act - which has nothing at all to do with why this forum/site were even up. It's writing, fundamentally - people writing erotica, sharing their work, getting feedback on the content, structure, rules, etc...and not on the nature of the content.

It's like going to WebMD and having a cow that anyone dares speak of medical issues, and what they think about people who have those medical issues.

Are these people trolls, or just that pitiful in life they just need something to complain about?

Bravo!

Alas, never assume everyone who signs up for an account "gets it." :(

It's like the people who buy Marilyn Mason tickets to his concerts just to hang signs protesting his performance/existence...

.....HEY! :) Maybe you could lump it in with "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

And by the way, yeah, I noticed the reaction when I saw "Jennifer's Secret." I started laughing at him/her. :D

i am surprised you received such a response. adultery is very common and if a partner feel neglected, not surprising. but writing a fantasy about it is no big whoop. i don't dig incest or pedaphillia, so i won't read stories like that. hmm. i'd just listen to those who critique your style, flow, and format, not agreement with fantasy topic

A Cuckold category would fix the Loving Wives category. It's awkward to have a category that has monogamous married relations while also including stories that are the exact opposite of monogamous married relations. If cuckold was its own category, I think the offended could more easily avoid getting angry about being sucked into another cheating story.

The problem still remains that 'extramarital relations' ≠ 'cuckold', at least, not a unanimous opinion. I have had threesomes and more-somes with a SO and never consider her unfaithful; therefore the relationships were neither monogamous nor made me a cuckold.

The story's hot and honestly quite fair to the character. The morality police can stuff it -- it's a work of fiction.

Of course, cheating sucks in real life, but this a hot story. Period.

To the OP, I would not let the people with negative feedback get to you. First, let me say that it is wonderful that you have decided to give writing a chance to begin. I have had a lot of people tell me they could not even begin to imagine writing outside the academic environment for personal enjoyment and sharing it with the world. So I have the utmost respect for everyone who writes in this community.

While it is annoying to see someone give negative feedback without being constructive, I simply ignore them as they are not being helpful to my growth as writer. Water off a duck's back is my mentality when dealing with those. And to those that do offer the constructive criticism, I have learned to have a thick skin because at times their feedback may truly be helpful while other times they still seek to be insulting about it.

If someone has a problem with the angle you have taken your story with a character or are even picking apart your grammar and use of commas, then tough for them. They can simply move on to other stories then. Ultimately it is your story. You do not have to take it in the direction they deem more fit than you, the author.

I am certainly no grammar expert out there and only expect such from the editors of this website. Heck, I am checking thoroughly as possible for mistakes while I am moving my stories to this site. Some of the mistakes I have caught have made me face palm myself many times and wonder why I didn't get flamed by the grammar police after all.

Despite all this, many people still enjoyed my stories well enough to write back and even continue to write me regularly for updates. That goes to show you people will still love and enjoy your work while overlooking mistakes in grammar. Anyway, outside of the editors, any normal reader criticizing your comma usage may not have a clue about grammar either despite thinking so.

One final note that I wish to share is a lesson I have learned in writing. For the few comments or ratings you receive, know that there is a silent majority of many more people out there that have enjoyed your work despite their decision not to write you back or rate the story.

I have not read your story yet but will make a note to check it out. Looking forward to reading your story! ^_^

While I'm not the OP, this resonated with me and I wanted to thank you for it. It's very easy to forget!

Probably a bunch of fundies alarmed at the thought that women have sexual needs at all, that they aren't just cooking, cleaning, baby making machines.

Erotican--wonderful story! The buildup and attention to detail were outstanding. Disregard the anonymous, damaged trolls venting their anger.

By way of feedback, the only thing marring this otherwise great story is a brief POV change where you seemed to go from third-person close to a more distant omniscient perspective as you give a lot of exposition about Brad's history. That momentarily broke the trance. You save it by zooming back in quickly, although it would be easy to re-craft that brief passage and maintain the spell.

Other than that, an incredibly hot story!

it is inevitable with erotica. especially when it comes to sex, people can have specific turn ons and turn offs, which is why we have all these categories and tags. of course, people also like to unconsciously assume that their opinion is the one true religion of the universe, so they view your effort to appeal to different opinions as some sort of personal failure to grasp the "right" way to write erotica. you would think on a website that features rape, mind control, and non-human as categories, people wouldnt get hung up on adultery, but then you would be giving humanity far too much credit.

TBH though, i am personally not at all fond of adultery/ cuckold stories, mainly due to thier prevalance and popularity. the popular appeal of it says some nasty things about society's real, unconscious opinions on marriage that just makes me feel wierd reading them...

it just reminds me of how many people marry prematurely, have kids, live miserable lives, fuck around and get divorced, then fuck up thier kids with thier retarded behaviour and choices inadvertently pushing them to make the same mistakes. i guess the realism of adultery stories depresses me too much to enjoy them, because some are otherwise finely written erotica.

Be Calm

Not everybody can deal with fantasy especially the delicate topic of adultery. In the wild, most animals mate and separate. Religion advises against that in humans. And that's why 70% of the marriages fail.

Yep.

And based on this reality alone, and the OP, I know before I even finish that my upcoming "The Other Woman's Guide To The Art Of Cheating" is guaranteed to piss off a whole lot of people who got cheated on, or who are petrified of it!

But, it needs to be done. So, I'm gonna :D
