Your choice of binding?

Maybe i just missed it, but does anyone have a recomendation for rope diametre?
General consensus is 1/4" to 3/8". I'm a little (possibly over- ) confident with 1/8", as it tends to be more flexible, takes knots better, stows easily, and can be cut quicker and easier if need be. Thinner rope or line has a disadvantage, though, in that you'll use more of it, and it can lead to more "slippage", including one hidden strand or two pinching while the rest seem to be just snug enough.

Personally, I'd reread my posts for cold practicality, then add that another fine suggestion for bondage material is some stuff called vet wrap, which is available at tack supply shops, and most online adult toy stores carry it as well. There's some self-sticking variant on the venerable Ace bandage, as well, which is just thinner vet wrap. leaves some redness and marks like pillow creases which fade in about the same time as pillow creases, generally.

For general body bondage I like 1/4" twisted nylon rope, it's soft and doesn't leave marks (unless I want it too), this includes shibari style bondage. I only use 1/8" nylon cord for breast bondage and some digit bondage (toes and fingers), otherwise I find it pinches too much and requires too much length to do the same job 1/4" rope does. 3/8 (or 1/2") nylon rope is used for suspension bondage mostly, or when I use spreader bars. Otherwise anything over 3/8" is overkill and leaves sloppy knots.

...good points from someone who clearly knows their stuff.

I bought a clothesline at the dollar store for, you guessed it, a dollar. So far it is doing very well, not leaving marks and is enough for me to cut into the lengths I want. I like to try a lot of different things. I'm just learning, still.

bondage on a budget

You can try some bondage tape if you like. It sticks only to itself. I like to have my partner put both arms together and touch at the wrists and wrap around that multiple times. Bondage tape doesn't stick to skin, can be easily cut in an emergency, can be reused if you are careful taking it off and holds fast. For inexpensive bondage tape, simply cut a roll of plastic wrap (Saran type) in half or in thirds and wrap around several times. Good luck explaining to the in-laws why your cling-tite is cut into sections when time comes to put away the leftovers after supper!

Easy, you buy bowls and such that are just that width :D

"See no waisted wrap this way, it's just the width of the bowl so that makes it last twice as long" :D

Be careful with clothesline, it can pinch and cause massive problems with circulation. Why? Clothesline doesn't stretch well and if your partner stuggles alot in the rope it actually tightens itself due to the way it is braided and the cotton. Also when it get's moist (sweat) or wet it can bind up badly. Not to mention that because it is cotton it maintains body fluids in it and gets funky way quick (all rope has this issue but especially cotton clothesline, also if you use the same rope on multiple people there are sorts of other health issues involved).

That being said I think everyone starts learning about bondage with it, I know I did years ago. It's good to learn the basics and the like. Your local hardware store (or marine supply store depending on what part of the country you are in) has much better rope options when you need to upgrade and continue learning.

I believe you all (forget who specifically) mentioned the use of stockings.

It works very well.

I don't know about shrink wrap, but I am looking at my Tupperware differently!

Oh, I'm nothing if not careful but I will remember that, thanks!

At the rope demo I recently went to, they said the thicker the ropes the better safety wise but I'm drawn to smaller diameter ropes for some reason.

Smaller ropes hurt more don't they?
That could be a reason.

I actually did the same as you about 3 years back and bought the dollar store cotton variety. We already had cotton rope from the hardware which was thicker, but also more expensive. This cheaper, thinner version has served us well, especially as I have those nasty allergies to anything else but we wanted excess rope. We usually seperate the ropes we are going to use on anyone else, but as a rule, I wash them in the washing machine with no deterioration or problems and the added comfort of knowing they have been cleaned regularly, even if only our own personal use ones...ropes do get dirty no matter how careful you are and some of the prettier, fancier ones made from other materials do not take as kindly to being cleaned. We have used them for various types of bondage and had no problems to date.

Yes, well, though that might be true for some, we have been careful and no one has been hurt so far with these ropes.

It's good to hear positive things from someone far more experienced than I am!

Ummm I am quite a novice here as well but I will say I LOVE the "beginner book" I picked up at the local kink store called :
screw the roses, send me the thorns by Miller & Devon.
I found it both hilarious & enlightening...it is written in a very comfortable way that is almost like a friend chatting with you...
I have yet to find a partner to play with & have recently been released from my on-line Master so it may be a while before I get into this again...

Screw the Roses is one of the most highly recommended BDSM-related books out there; It's good stuff, even if you have "been there, done that". Kind of a desk reference, and a reminder of where you've been, and not to forget the basics.

This gave me a giggle. Not the advice, which is sound, but the part about starting out with clothes line. That must be an average for many! I started out with clothes pins, myself, ROFL! That stuff is handy, cheap, and easy to get a hold of without odd looks. You're absolutely right about the line binding, tightening, and sometimes being a pain, though.

Me, I prefer leather straps and laces. I use suede, and yes I'm aware of all the dangers there. Bondage tape, or saran wrap, is also excellent IME.

Yes, I like that book too!

I love the chart showing where it's okay to do impact play and where it's NOT.

Thank you everyone.

So much great information and tips...

First step was Amazon and saving links to "Fav's" in fact the person that stirred my curiosity has shared a few links with with me and I just returned the favor.

*Thanks Wizard*

I carefull read every post and hope this thread continues... If I knew enough to as questions, I would, but I sense many hours of sensual pleasures ahead.. :nana:

Watch out for twisted hard nylon (or any type of twisted plastic) ropes. They don't hold knots well. Braided will hold the knots but are too abrasive. They are cheeper for a reason.

Braided cotton works best for me. Best of all to clean up just toss them in the wash.

3/8 is the minimum I will use in contact with skin. I do use 1/2 at times. I use smaller stuff when it is not going to be in skin contact or under strain.
