Trump Warns He Will Take Back the Panama Canal Unless They Stop ‘Ripping Off’ America and Start Countering China’s Influence​

Donald Trump has warned that the United States could seize back the Panama Canal unless the country agrees to lower its costs and counter Chinese influence.

In a post on Truth Social, the incoming president urged the Panamanian government to start taking care of the canal or face the consequences.

He wrote:

The United States has a vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal, and that was always understood. We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands! It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a token of cooperation with us and Panama. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question. To the Officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly!

In view of the events of the last week in Congress, I believe it is more appropriate to refer to him as "Vice-President Elect".

Canal infrastructure is vulnerable to "If I can't have it, noone will" attacks. Panama could decide to C4 everything or fill it with cement. Global shipping is past its peak and may eventually stop.

And the canal pumps use lake water, which becomes salinated as canal water is recycled back to the lake, and is sometimes depleted by drought. Panama needs drinking water and local farming more than it needs container ships full of plastic junk.

You repeatedly mention this as if a minor technical point matters to the public.

It was a trial, and a jury of his peers rendered the verdict. Felon awaits sentencing, which is okay by me. Hopefully, justice will happen rather than get steamrolled by Trump's newly elected status. If he gets off, I'll feel the justice system failed all of us. If he is sentenced and it's carried out, I'll feel some relief believing that our system can overcome political power and wealth when carried out.
