What's wrong with CUNT?

OK, along the same lines as my "cocksucker" thread, I started thinking of the colloquialisms we use for the male and female naughty parts. Almost all of them are used as a negative slur at some point, but only one really seems to raise people's ire...CUNT.

So my question is why? I mean the whole room doesn't go silent when someone calls me a prick. Call a woman a pussy and she'll probably laugh at you. So why does this one particular word get everyone so infuriated? This is a serious question, because I'm genuinely trying to understand.

See, I like the word cunt. I think it's a strong, powerful sounding word. It's really the only nickname for the vagina that isn't passive in tenor. It has an almost animalistic quality to it which evokes visions of a sexually strong woman taking control of her passions and unleashing them on her partner. I find that in writing, sometimes it is the only word that fits the mood of a certain scene. Just the same way sometimes you wanna make love, sometimes you just wanna fuck!

So ladies, and guys too for that matter, what's your problem with CUNT?

Oddly...

I agree with you. I just DON'T like being called a cunt. It's like bitch to me. I just think it's mean. I also think calling someone a douche is stupid. Why not a hairbrush or another object women may groom themselves with.

Different strokes. Like the word all you want, but I wouldn't use it too much, unless I was sure the Use-ee was like minded.

I don't have a problem with it either in a personal or intimate setting, sometimes it just fits the mood. The only problem I have with the word is when it's tossed around as an insult. I don't know why, but it does seem to be the "there's nothing above that" insult for women. It's just one of those odd words.

I think the reason cunt is viewed as a "don't go there" word is because of its connotations. I've heard cunt used to indicate that a woman is good for nothing - except fucking. There are overtones of threatened abuse in the word cunt that I don't hear in insults such as bitch or pussy.

When I've heard men use cunt derogatorily, he's communicating that she's stupid and spiteful, but also that he feels that he has some sort of control over her. That's just my observation, though. I'm sure there are other ones out there.

I do like the way it's being reclaimed, though. You're right about it being a powerful sounding word for female genitalia. If I were in the midst of some hot foreplay and a guy whispered, "I want to fuck your cunt," in my ear, it would totally turn me on. But, if he called me a cunt in anger, I would be upset.

I never understood the gravity of the word, personally. I suppose I could get an idea of it if someone attached it to meanings other than just a vulgarity for vagina, but I don't hold those ideas. I hold it to the word cock: I don't think the words are pretty, and I would only ten to use them in more vulgar connotations instead of a nice description. The only exception is that sometimes, as you said, those words just fit. If it feels like cunt/dick/fuckhole should be used, by golly I'll use it.

Also, I could be really desensitized to offensive things, so I doubt this is of any help in regards to the majority.

Well there's one man that can call me many names... But cunt is not one of them. He calls my hot flowing pussy, cunt. He knows he's welcome to call my pussy that but not me as his woman.
Very interesting question.
He also knows that naughty is out of the question due to connotation. I am always very good at what I do, rather then the negative sounding naughty. Maybe that's just me...

i despise that word because the people most prone to using it are the ones who use it to express a virulence of misogyny that i find intolerable.

in this respect, it is precisely like the "n" word: i just don't use it and find its use ignorant, frankly.

So accurate, it needed to be said again.

I've never really had a problem with cunt. Of course, I tend to use in a gender neutral fashion as an insult and the kind of men and women that tend to hang out with me certainly have no problem with dirty talk of any kind. I actually find it more amusing that clit doesn't have any negative connotations.

There's nothing wrong with cunt. The problem is with the people who use the word in a negative and disparaging way. Mrs Scribble is rightly proud of her cunt. But call her a cunt and you’ll be eating your supper through a straw for the next few weeks. And that’s even before I have a say on the matter.

Hey thanks to everyone for playing along wiht me on this thread. I'm finding this discussion VERY insightful and intriguing. I hope I'm not offending anyone, as that is certainly not my intention. :)

OK, everyone's said pretty much the same thing, but you bring up a whole new point which I HAD actually considered. The much ballyhooed "n-word" has but one meaning, it refers only to folk of color, and is always meant in a derogatory way. I won't go into it's accepted use by said folk of color in the urban world, that's a whole other topic. Cunt however, has a meaning which is totally separate from it's use as a derogatory term, and in and of itself is in no way negative. As has been described above, calling a pussy a cunt and calling a woman a cunt are two very different things.

So if the majority of the respondents agree that it's OK to use the word to describe female genitalia, but not in the context of describing a person, does tone and context have any bearing on it's level of offense? In example, I give you the word "slut".

Now if I were to say a woman. "get out of my sight you fucking slut," I guarantee I'd get slapped. However, if I were in the heat of passion to call a woman, "my sexy, hot little slut," not every woman would take offense. Almost every woman would take offense though, if I called her "my sexy, hot little cunt," correct? Or would you?

I guess the new question is, does the context in which the term is used to describe a woman matter, of is it always offensive when used to describe another person?

It is almost universally the context use that makes either slut or cunt negative in my book. The first time I ever ran across someone who used cunt a lot was a very napoleon type man who was a professional wrestler and the "booking" agent my ex used when he wrestled. This guy used the cunt word for females who would always hang around the dressing room doors because they wanted to fuck a wrestler. My ex would be enfuriated some nights when the show was done simply by the mouth of this little guy.
Sometime later after I got into wrestling as well, little guy referred to me with that word one night and I'm not sure exactly what happened but I never heard it come out of his mouth again in my presence. My ex had a bloody, banged up fist and this guy's face was messed up quite a bit.
So yes, it is all about context.

This is the crux for me...I love my cunt-it's beautiful and gives me and him great and endless pleasure...when he tells me he is going to fill my cunt it makes me shiver...

Cunt is a word that should be reclaimed by those of us who possess them

at the end of the day, language is in a constant state of flux. the meaning of a given word changes over time and with the corresponding non-verbal cues.

in the immortal words of the great george carlin, "words are symbols and i like to leave symbols to the symbol minded."

more importantly, how do you say "cunt" in Esperanto?

I like the sound of Mrs. Scribble. And whole-heartedly concur.

It is in part, context TBK. I don't like the word used in reference to me, whether or not the user meant to be complimentary or not as in your latter example but understand other women might not have a problem with it.

When I say the c-word I know that it is time to step back and take a breath no matter if its in an arguement or during play. There is just something so demeaning in my mind about that word.

It does bother me that 'cunt' is pretty much the ultimate expletive and there is no equivalent referring to male genetalia that has anything like the same shock factor. I know that it's about the worst thing you can call a guy. It implies (here in the UK anyway) that the guy is antagonistic and/or morally reprehensible. I guess is you call a guy a prick, you're at least acknowledging that he's got one. Calling a man a 'cunt' seems to imply that he doesn't deserve to be the proud possessor of a cock and balls.

As a submissive masochist, I'm fine with 'cunt' being used in a sexual way. It has positive and negative connotations for me that I don't find mutually exclusive. I've been called a 'useless cunt' when I'm out of favour and 'cunt' has been used to refer to my pussy in a positive and loving way. For me it's all about the motivation behind the use of the word. I'm not going to squirm in maso glee if some stranger or someone who genuinely dislikes me calls me a cunt because that would be insane. If someone I love and trust chooses to decide that I'm currently of no use except as a set of holes, well I find that fucking hot.

There used to be a time when I disliked the word but I've since found that I have a strong kink for verbal humiliation. Regardless of that though, for me the context is everything. If I'm in absolutely no doubt of what I truly mean to someone, they can call me whatever they fucking like.

To me it seems bizarre that women can take exception to certain words, even when used by someone they love and trust. It's all strokes for folks though and I guess if 'cunt' is a buzzkill it makes sense not to use it. What I don't get is that some women seem to have hair-triggers when it comes to certain words and will feel that they have been disrespected even when that clearly wasn't the guy's intention. For me, if the intent to disrespect is clearly absent, going apeshit about the use of a certain word and feeling offended is a bit pointless and unfair.

Just my tuppence.

I like short, Anglo-Saxon words like cunt. They're viscerally powerful - a literary rabbit punch. And precisely because of that visceral power, such words need to be used appropriately.

Guys who generally refer to women as cunts clearly need a beating. But in the proper context, cunt can be an extremely erotic word. Words are tools. You have to know how and when to use them.

There is even no a 'good' word for pussy in Chinese, we just try not to mention it even when couples are having sex in bed.
