for the rebooted spotlight thread (as discussed in this thread), the HT spotlight is on nightbird!

the rules:
1. questions or simple comments only. this is not a place to argue with someone, challenge them or attempt to engage in debate. save the arguing for another time.

2. don't be an asshat: don't ask deliberately embarrassing questions, or stuff that treads on the sacred. the purpose is to get someone to open up, not shut down.

3. have fun. try to think of engaging questions that will get someone talking.

4. anyone can ignore or refuse to answer questions they don't like, without explanation.

5. when this thread's run its course, quoll should review the original thread and select any of the people who said they would be willing to be spotlighted.

everyone clear? then let's get started!

NB, i've got a few questions with which i would like to begin. these are a series of 10 questions originally developed by french journalist bernard pivot, and popularized by james lipton of inside the actors studio:

1. what is your favorite word?
2. what is your least favorite word?
3. what turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
4. what turns you off?
5. what is your favorite curse word?
6. what sound or noise do you love?
7. what sound or noise do you hate?
8. what profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
9. what profession would you not like to do?
10. if heaven exists, what would you like to hear god say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

Wheee! A new vict...er, spotlightee! :D

What first brought you to Lit? And what made you come back after such a long hiatus?

Elsewhere, you mentioned that Lit is so much different than it was during your first stay. For the relative newbs (like me), would you mind expanding a bit on that? Curiosity and all that.

Ooh, someone new to badger!

1. If you have to do an event in your past all over again, knowing what you know now, what would it be?

2. Do you have any regrets, and if so, what is it?

3. What advice would you give to your 18 year-old self?

4. What would you change about yourself?

5. And what would you change about the society in which you live?

That's it for now! :D

Ok I don't know how to make one of those fancy reply messages that allow me to post my answers directly under your question in a different colour so I'm going to have to do this the old fashioned way.

I've never heard of James Lipton before, I'm going to have to google that later..

(1) My favourite word right now is "yes" although depending on the day and my mood that may change.

(2) My least favourite word is a curse word and its the word "cunt." Hands down, that word just disgusts me.

(3) Sunrises and or Sunsets and a Camera to capture them. That and those moments that make you catch your breath.

(4) Rude people turn me off.

(5) I've always believed cursing reflects negatively on the person who is doing it. To me it makes a person seem unintelligent and unable to verbally communicate in an articulate and intelligent manner. However when needed I do like to drop the Fuck word on the rare occasion.

(6) I love the sounds of the beach and or being near the water. And I love the sounds Seagulls make.

(7) I hate screaming crying babies.

(8) Profession...Hmmm, Water going Vessel Captain or a Billionaire.

(9) Fire Fighter, Police Officer, or a Paramedic.. I just don't have the emotional strength that those professions require.

(10) I would like to hear God say "Surprise Heaven does exist and your welcome here"

Hi Bailadora! I just checked my own profile to see what my join date was. It's hard to believe I've been on and off here since 2002. Wow...

It's been such a long time since I first joined Lit I'm not really sure I know why I first joined.
I'm thinking it was for several reasons. One, back then I felt like I was a not too bad writer and I wanted, needed an audience for my stories. Lit was that audience.
Lit was also an escape for me, when I was younger I was very naive about what life was really like and when I had the family and the partner and was out on my own it wasn't at all what I expected. Add to that some stressful traumatic things I was very ill prepared to cope with and I desperately needed an escape and Lit served that purpose.
Why did I come back to Lit...Hmm, I'm here because a part of me really enjoys having a place where adults can be adults. In a way Lit is kind of like a social group of Adults who meet in a comfortable place and can talk openly about anything and everything.
I have to confess I find the How To area and a lot of the people who are How Toers that post in this area to be very intelligent and a little intimidating. But I like Intelligence and there are so many things to learn here, and so many great personalities.
When I came back after my Hiatus I didn't recognize most of the posters on Lit and because of that it felt very very different to me. I can remember a time when Lit was all about the erotic writing, and then it morphed into more of a social place which then morphed into a drama filled pit of people who seemed intent on fighting with each other. Thats one of the reasons why I left, it just wasn't fun anymore.
I feel a little bit like everyone is in on some inside secret joke that I am clueless about here if that makes any sense.

Yeah!!! I'm curious about your reading habits (I always like to hear about books people love).
Are you a reader? What is your favorite book? Do you like to reread, and if so, what book could you read again and again without tiring of it?
Is there a classic novel you feel you should have read, but have not?

Hi J!!

It just so happens I have some shelves behind my computer desk with books on them that I am looking at right now. So yes I am a reader.

What's my favourite book? That is a tough question..Do I really have to pick just one? My favourite book is a tie between Tom Clancy's Without Remorse and his Rainbow Six Novel.
Yes I do like to reread, and I could read Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings or The Hobbit over and over and over without ever tiring of it.
I'm not sure if this counts as a classic novel or not but I've always wanted to read the Art of War.

Fire Breeze!!!

(1) There are a few events I wish I had a do over button for but the one that comes to my mind the most right now is my education. I totally sold myself short and wish I could go back and do it over again.

(2) I regret not recognizing my mental health issues years and years ago. I think if I had been able to get the help then I have now and recognized the fact I have a chemical imbalance in my brain that is easily rectified by the proper medication it would have had a dramatic effect on my life.

(3) The best advice I could give to my 18 year old self would be the knowledge that I gained in my 20's that allowed me to be confident and realize that people did like me and where interested in me and that I wasn't worthless.

(4) I'm over weight and I really really wish I could lose it.

(5) I'm not even sure where to begin to answer this one.. What would I change about society? I've always resented the fact that I have to spend so much time at a place doing a job so that I can make money in order to survive when I've always felt the precious time we have known as life should be spent in so many other ways.

hi NB, thanks for the answers!

so i see that in response to a few other questions that you're a tolkien fan. what are your thoughts on:

11. what you've heard of the hobbit adaptation peter jackson is working on?
12. where do you hang out on lit? obviously, HT & HT cafe, but where else?
13. what of your stories are you most pleased with?
14. do you have any favorite lit authors?
15. you're a writer. what authors were most influential on you and how you write?

Me, too.

Don't sell yourself short. I bet you have plenty of insight that people would find helpful or interesting. But WRT the rest, yep - you're right on the money. It's why I keep coming back.

I understand what you mean. There are a couple of people who seem to have disappeared into the ether. Real life and all that, I imagine. But I really miss their contribution to the board.

Every now and again, HT will have a dust up but unless someone is deliberately trolling, we try to keep it respectful. That's not to say it doesn't get heated at times, but most HT'ers try to keep the debate about the topic rather than devolving into personal attacks and flame wars.

Is there a special meaning or significance to your screen name?

If money were no object, what is your ideal vacation?

How would you describe your personality?

When it comes to books, do you have a favorite genre? What about music?

Hi Ed your welcome for the answers. I actually like doing this, it's kind of fun.

(11) I'm a little nervous about the Hobbit. The filming of the movie has been plagued from the start from issues with the Screen Actors Guild and it's never a good sign when a movie is filmed under controversy. I have seen some trailers for it on Youtube and they didn't impress me.

(12) Now I mostly hang out in the How To and on the Playground. I have my own thread in the Playground that I'm trying to revitalize.

(13) I have two stories posted here on Lit the links are in my sig lines of the two I like "The Date" the best mostly because my Co Op story ended badly.

(14) I don't really read the Lit stories so no I don't have a favourite authour.

(15) I have my own style and way of writing. I haven't really been influenced by anyone although I did take a creative writing class in Highschool that influenced me more than anything.

Hi Bailadora,

Thank you for the don't sell myself short. What does WRT mean?

I'm with you on missing some of the people here, I think the part that bothers me the most is that you just don't know what happened to them. One day they're here the next poof gone. Makes me wonder if they are ok or what happened to them. No closure really sucks.

When I left Lit things where aweful. It got so bad that people where PMing each other behind my back telling each other lies about me and they would believe it! Rumours are horrible and I was so sick of it.

Hi again my toe pointy friend..

Special meaning to my screen name? That one is easy I'm a total nightbird always have been. I sleep better during the day than I do at night.

Money no object vacation? I would buy myself a boat about a 42-45 footer and sail the great lakes. It's always been a dream / goal of mine.

My personality? Woah, that's a tough one. I would say I'm a big hearted, kind, caring, easy going guy. Is that what you meant?

Books? Genre... Let's see.. (Looking at my shelf) My shelf is Loaded with books by Tom Clancy, a few by Robert Ludlum I really like his Covert one series.. Oh I also have a couple of books on Boat Navigation and canoeing. Did that answer your question?
Music? I used to be a huge Phil Collins fan, and there isn't much music I don't like I would say my favourite would be Rock and or Pop.

That you for your answers, Nightbird.

Now some more of the Inquisition :D

1. What are some of your dreams and what is preventing you from attaining it?

2. If you were the Prime Minister for the day, and could introduce or revoke any bill, what would it be and why?

3. Do you follow politics? (should have asked this one first )

4. If you could travel to any city, where it would it be and why does it attract you so?

5. I know that you hang out on the Playground and have a home-thread. Where else do you hang your cyber hat?

That's all for now :)

Hi Firebreeze, did I mention I still get my where's and there's wrong?

(1) One of my dreams is to sail the Great Lakes on my own boat. Lack of money is preventing that one.
(1,B) I'm at a point in my life where I want the security and comfort of a marriage to the right Woman. So far I haven't been able to get a relationship to stick long enough. Not for a lack of trying though.

(2) I'm a very proud Canadian and as such they're are a few changes I would make. First I would stop spending so much money on foreign aid. People here in Canada need aid and are struggling and suffering we need to HELP THEM!
Second, if a Company is going to produce and sell a product in Canada then I say it needs to contain as many Canadian made parts and raw materials as possible.
I'm not sure this is what you meant, and I have a few other ideas similar to these so I'm going to stop here for the sake of length.

(3) Not very much no.

(4) I'm not much of a City person, but if I had to pick one I would say Montreal. I think it would be a great experience to see the Canadiens play at home.

(5) I'm not sure if you mean on Lit or just on the Internet in general. On Lit I stay pretty much here in How To and in the Playground.. On the Internet lets see, There is Facebook, Youtube, CBC for the news, CTV and Global TV both have websites I use for watching TV shows, Yahoo and Gmail for chatting and calling friends, oh and I play WOW.

Can't wait for more questions..

What does WRT mean?

Whoops! WRT is an acronym for with regard to. Sorry about that.

When I left Lit things where aweful. It got so bad that people where PMing each other behind my back telling each other lies about me and they would believe it! Rumours are horrible and I was so sick of it.

That would really suck. Hopefully your second stay will be much better. HT'ers will argue/debate opposing POV's (points of view), but rarely does it get personal.

My personality? Woah, that's a tough one. I would say I'm a big hearted, kind, caring, easy going guy. Is that what you meant?

Yep, that's what I meant.

Yes. So thriller/crime fiction, got it. I managed to chew my way through The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games and that's about it. I got bogged down over all the technical details and skipped ahead to the action.

Music? I used to be a huge Phil Collins fan, and there isn't much music I don't like I would say my favourite would be Rock and or Pop.

Phil Collins - wow, that takes me back. Separate Lives came out right about the time of my break up with my first boyfriend. I was convinced I'd never love again!:rolleyes:

Did you like him better on his own or with Genesis?

No need to be sorry about the WRT I got the basic understanding of what it meant but I have to confess it drove me nuts trying to figure it out.

You aren't the first person to ever complain about Tom Clancy's book's being too technical in the first few chapters. If your feeling brave and are willing to give him another try I highly suggest you read Rainbow Six or Without Remorse. Rainbow Six in particular isn't bogged down with Technical details.

I hate break ups! I recently got dumped by a Woman I've been dating for just over three months it sucks! To answer your question I have to say I like him better on his own.

I'm sorry to read about the break up. Yeah - they suck big time. :rose:

If your feeling brave and are willing to give him another try I highly suggest you read Rainbow Six or Without Remorse. Rainbow Six in particular isn't bogged down with Technical details.

Ok - I'm game. I'll add Rainbow Six to my TBR (to be read) pile. Although, I have about 5 or 6 novels already in the que, so it might take me awhile to get there.

When you read, are you a one at a time kind of person or do you switch between several books?

Do you have a favorite season? If so, what and why?

What's your biggest pet peeve?

Paraphrasing your sig, you say it's what's in a woman's head that interests you. So - care to elaborate on that?

When you get the munchies, do you crave savory or sweet?

So, I've added Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy to my summer reading list. I have taken some flack about being a reading teacher who's never read these. Hey, it happens.

:eek::eek::eek:

That's....that's sacrilege! ;)

I know, I know....

I haven't seen the movies, either. I avoid watching movies if I know there are books; I'm strictly book first.

The movie is for background and entertainment. Cliff's Notes are for the reading assignment. :D;)

hey guys sorry i've been MIA. my life got a little crazy for a while there.

i share your misgivings re: the hobbit. i thought he did a fantastic job with LOTR though and i'm willing to keep a (somewhat) open mind, though...

[reads thread more]

[trout-smacks the living daylights outta j for not having yet read tolkien]

16. what is it you really enjoy about writing erotica?
17. insofar as you have one, how do you distinguish between erotica & porn?
18. what things about you might people who know you in RL know that litsters probably don't?
19. who is your favorite author?
20. what's the strangest thing someone's asked you out of the blue?
