Nice90sguy inspired me to start this. Is a person's voice, or their manner of speaking, sexy to you? How? What makes a voice or a manner of speaking sexy to you?

I'll start with things I like in the way a woman talks.

I like a voice that is notably feminine, but that can be in a range of registers. I don't want to hear "fundie baby voice," something that has been in the news a lot lately, because it's exaggeratedly high and sounds too submissive and fake. I like assertiveness to be mixed with femininity. Naturalness. Intelligence. Positivity.

Good vocabulary and diction.

A talent for word play.

A minimum of up speak and vocal fry.

I'm not really into the husky, smoky femme fatale voice, like that of Lauren Bacall or Kathleen Turner.

Not using "like" and "you know" too much.

Some celebrities I think have sexy voices: Susan Sarandon, Monica Belluci, Penelope Cruz, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johannsen, Keira Knightley, Thandie Newton, Helen Mirren.

If I were a woman, some male actors whose voices I think would be sexy would be Sean Connery, Jeremy Irons, Russell Crowe, James Earl Jones, Patrick Stewart, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, Javier Bardem.

Are there kinds of things one can say that you think are particularly sexy or turn you on?

A clear enthusiastic “I want you” is great to hear from any sexy woman or man, depending on your tastes.

I’m particularly drawn to British, Southern USA, Russian, and Australian accents in women. New England and Canada accents can also be fun.

Emily Jean Stone (she doesn’t want to go by Emma anymore), Jennifer Hale, Erika Christensen, Natalie Lander, Julianne Moore, and Eiza Gonzalez are on my list of women with sexy voices in addition to all those previously mentioned.

I’d add Al Pacino, Greg Chun, & David Hayter to the guys.

Strangely enough, I find other people's recorded voices, like for example reading an audiobook, too weird to get turned on by. Spicy bits in an audiobook give me the ick. It's not as bad in videos but I still mostly mute them.

When it comes to in-person voices, though, I don't have specific preferences except I don't like babyish or childish tones. I love someone who sounds confident and in control. Someone in a bar or restaurant confidently whispering in my ear all the naughty things they want to do to me later... Instant success.

I refuse to post here until I hear some audio clips (for my science research)...

I didn't become conscious of how sensitive I am to women's voices until I noticed that I can be attracted to "ugly" women with nice voices, and put off "beautiful" women with harsh ones. How damn shallow, I know...

And fun/funny with a quick wit. Taylor Tomlinson, the comedian hosting After Midnight on CBS (also Netflix specials) gets my attention every time. That sort of personality and speech pattern is how I imagine the FMCs in my stories - somebody who is a joy to banter with.

I'm with you on Matthew McConaughey. Mild accent with a touch of enigma, inviting further exploration.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I have to admit I really like Stephen Fry reading the Harry Potter stories. Not sexy, but really relaxing.

My writing employs dialog extensively to drive the story and create the attraction between characters. Suggestive phrases, innuendo, double entendre and clever retorts all have their rolls in building the sexual tension between the characters (that's my intent anyway), but I never describe how they sound. What sounds sexy to one reader could turn off another. I let them decide if they want a smokey Betty Becall or a breathless Marilyn Monroe.

Once the pants come off, the dialog switches to a cruder, more graphic form, but I'd imagine the reader still hears the same voice

I get chills from Hannah Reid's voice. There's something about her intonation and the range she sings in that is just... it... for me. I just close my eyes an listen and time becomes... unimportant.

Link if you're unfamiliar

Intonation, accent, little mannerisms all have a combinatorial effect.

This.

I love non-English accents. Actual English accents are okay, but I'd take (and have!) Irish, French, Scottish, Spanish, German, Dutch, Indian, Thai etc over the home country any day.

For me, volume is sexy: whispered words and breathless begging. Kind-hearted laughter is sexy: smiles and gentle teasing.

And, yes, content is key. I've always been attracted to women who are cleverer/more talented/more knowledgeable than me in some way/field of study, and conversation is clearly the clue to that in most cases.

So, yeah, I dig chicks wot talk clever, innit?

I guess I'm more like a dog - tone and timbre win out every time for me over the words.

I've had hypnotherapy a few times, and that's where the tone and prosody of voice is paramount, even more than the words themsleves.

This isn't in any way sexy, but since I mentioned Samuel L. Jackson I have to mention his reading of the humorous children's bedtime story, Go The Fuck To Sleep. Absolutely uproarious, and his voice is perfect for it. It's easy to find online.

Few American's saying they like British accents, so I'll return the favour.

Oh, I am. The following clip was fairly formative for me (took ages to find, then it turns out to be the first one on the compliation)
I thought Kirsty Alley's ice queen voice in Cheers couldn't be topped and then 10 year old me found out she played a Vulcan in Star Trek 2 (oh my)

Then of course there's the larger than life take no prisoners cow-girl.

But I also like soft-spoke, shy with hidden depth (yes, she's Canadian)

Returning home, class being what it is, it is a fact that it is impossible for one British person to open their mouths without making someone else hate them. Which makes choose local accents pretty tricky. Still imagine the following voice either your BDSM or LW Cuckold story...

Penelope Keith was quite hot, in an uptight kind of way, but when the other female lead is Felicity Kendall, it's a losing battle from the start.

Absolutely.
The voice itself is something people can't really change, but the way they talk makes a huge difference. A small shy talking person makes a very different impression than someone with a confident person speaking with authority.

And on that point, the way people laugh can also be a major turn on or off.

Is a person's voice, or their manner of speaking, sexy to you?

Yes, very. If I find a person's voice appealing, I can override my natural hatred of speaking on the phone (which is much harder for me than speaking in person) and can talk to them for hours when I'm normally trying to rush to get off the phone. Though, chances are good I'm going to do a lot of listening rather than talking initially.

Being on friendly terms with someone automatically ups the appeal of their voice, but it won't undo my dislike for some tones. Smoking, for example, tends to make a voice sound a little fried and I'm not a fan. It can be an instant turn off. But, a voice I generally like talking down to me can have the same effect.

Voices don't have to be deep for me to like them. My husband speaks softly and I find a lot of comfort in him and that makes it easy to get aroused by his voice.

What makes a voice or a manner of speaking sexy to you?

Intent, timing, believability, focus, and tone are big factors.

A guy with a deep, rugged voice who is clearly aiming to arouse with no actual interest in following through is never going get me aroused. His intent will be one-sided and my interest will wane the harder he tries. But a guy who has genuine interest and uses his voice to drive that home? I can end up putty in their hands. Intent to arouse and my believability in them wanting me aroused go a long way. So, it's a very personal thing for me as far as sexy goes.

Timing... Read the room and make sure you grasp the full situation before trying to go for sexy talk. If I'm stressed with a load of paperwork scattered in front of me, it's going to go real bad no matter how sexy and appealing I find their voice.

If their focus seems split between me and something else,my interest wanes.

Tone... if a guy is speaking to me like they would a toddler or misbehaving child, I'm going to lose interest and their voice will become grating to me even if I otherwise enjoy it.

Are there kinds of things one can say that you think are particularly sexy or turn you on?

Things they are passionate about, even if I know nothing of the subject, is an instant turn on. Hearing that excitement in their voice, them continuing on and on without waiting for me to respond, just letting me listen, all turn ons.
As far as words themselves, sometimes less is more. Gently guiding me toward what they want in as few words as possible can go a long way.

So, there's a stark difference in appeal between, "I want those soft, luscious lips wrapped around my cock" and urging me to my knees with a hand on my shoulder then dragging their palm beneath my chin to lift my head and running their thumb over my lower lip as they sit back in a soft leather wingback before unfastening their pants and presenting their dick in silence, only to finally utter a controlled but breathy, *Good girl," as I begin to blow them.

The former is playful and appealing. The latter is uncontrollably arousing for me. Two words uttered at the right time, with the right intent, believability, and tone while their focus is clearly fully on me? Fucking heaven.

Personally I hate both of those. Giving me instructions just makes me a fucking servant and calling me 'good girl' might be the worst thing that a guy could say to me. Instant turn off. Both of these tell me that he doesn't give a fuck about me other than how I might make him cum. I find this cold, condescending and lacking even the slightest amount of intimacy. Perhaps I really am just a parking space to him but if he wants to turn me on at least he could lie about it and pretend that he cares? Sheesh!

Please understand that I'm not judging you, to each their own for sure. I know that servitude is a hot thing for many many people, just not me - at all. Really boring. Yet another kink that I'm just not into which doesn't help my popularity. Vanilla doesn't seem to get you a cup of coffee around here. : P

Luckily, I was writing about my interests in voices and what I find appealing.

Would be a bit weird to try speaking for others when the questions were directed toward personal interests.

Joan Greenwood, though it's hard for me to disentangle my fondness for that voice from her acting and the dialogue she's given.

One of the few male voices I find sexy is Chris Harms, with just the right amount of growl to it. Songs might be cheating though, since he's enhancing that by doubling.

I'm a sucker for many kinds of accents.

Not my thing personally, but this discussion reminds me of Howell from Black Books.

"Sexy" to me is about attitude and self-assurance. Someone who KNOWS and is comfortable within their own skin and mind and makes no apologies for who they are.

My wife and I were playing "Cards Against Humanity" with our adult kids.
She turned to her son and asked, "What's this card mean?"
He just shook his head, saying "Aw, mom!"
"No. What does 'Roadhead' mean?" she innocently asked the rest of us.
I said, "That's when a trucker gives you a thumbs up."
"Oh," she replied when she realized what I meant. "I've done it. I just didn't know that's what it was called."

Now SHE is sexy!

It's all about attitude.

EDIT: Just to clarify for those of you who don't know, 'Roadhead' is giving a blowjob to the car driver.

The sexiest celebrity voice I know is Sam Elliot, and I'm straight.
