🏺The original kink: Art, Artifacts & Pleasure 🏺

Ever wonder why sex became taboo? Seems to me it was viewed differently in the past. As we look at these historical pieces of art...don't pigeonhole them by placing present day mentality on them.
Oh indeed!

The most important thing: do not judge other cultures or time periods, with your present day mindset.

And again, yes! Sex seems to have been viewed in a much, much more free way than it is the case now.

... The big elephant in the glass store... Dare I say it... Religion.

Are you erotic archeologists on a break. I saw some Egyptian art that I thought could be placed here. Is it acceptable for murals to be shown here?

Also this is papyrus, thought to be the first mans magazine circa 1050BCE

Hmmm the murals and papyrus depictions give new meaning to the song, Walk Like An Egyptian!

I also think the human body back then was accepted much more for lack of a better word. I don't think there was as much of embarrassment then as now. Plus we have a lot more clothes these days LOL. Human body is beautiful all in their own way.

Well.... If I had to mention one era that influenced our prudish ways,
(No, not religion.. at least not before this era, in Denmark it was well know that the clergy was full of debauchery and sex, with illegitimate children being a problem, that was just one of the reasons why we had the Reformation in 1536.. that and that the church was corrupt to the core and owned more land than the king.)

May I present:

Queen Victoria 1st.

The Victorian period of literature roughly coincides with the years that Queen Victoria ruled Great Britain and its Empire (1837-1901). During this era, Britain was transformed from a predominantly rural, agricultural society into an urban, industrial one.

Victorianism was the culture of top hats, of dresses that covered every inch of the female body, of rigid gender norms, and of an almost pathological fear of sexuality. Its defining characteristic was the desire for security, especially security from the influence of the lower classes

The exactly opposite of what we want to learn about.

So back to the regular curriculum!! ❤️

Here in the north it came with christianity. It took a long time for the the priests to force it upon people, though.

For example in Western Finland people still thought for a long time that once engaged, it's ok for the young couple to have sex. And before that, having a kid could be considered a plus - it was a proof of fertility. And oh all the dirty content in folklore songs...

Vulva was considered magical. More powerful than the penis, actually. It was used in many ways, for example to bless cattle in the spring, or fields. It was said that if a woman showed her vulva to a bear, the bear would turn around in front something stronger than itself. Especially an old woman, the magic got stronger with age!

For the first Christians the ideal was to stay in celibacy until Christ return. Marrying was just the way for weak people to not burn in hell.

But where did they get that idea? Was it just a few people's way of thinking originally?

It is much the same here..
Our traditions and religious holidays are one wonderful mash of everything.
- and sex is much, much less frowned upon up here.

I really loved the story with the vulva being so powerful!! 🥰

.. I though it was actually that, just a few people's way of thinking, then forced to be recognised by the rest.

I assumed as much. Western parts had plenty of connections to Scandinavia. We actually had a considerable cultural and genetic divide across the country. The treaty of Nöteborg once drew the border between Sweden and Russia along that. (Well, actually in 1323 the concept of borders didn't exist yet, the border wasn't drawn until the next century.) There are STILL some signs of that left... But 100 years ago they were actually quite clear. Like virginity mattering more in the east, girls having more freedom in the west.

I suspect that too. Some of the apostles seem to have been pretty... Anti-women. But still, how did the Jews of the time see sex, were there anti-sex thinking groups even before that?

It is time for me to sleep, so my mind is not able to think that well ❤️
But, this is rather interesting!!!

❤️

(I will be intelligent and smart tomorrow again!)

Don't know. But do know that the Old Testament, the Torah and the Koran all have primarily the same stories word for word and all 3 descendants have yielded quite prudish followings today. I look back before the establishment of "civilization " and can't imagine such behavior. Survival relied on togetherness. Maybe I am just wishing...or grabbing straws...but I can't imagine sleeping in a cave listening to people having sex...and not being expected to participate. What else could build stronger unity? I can't imagine negative issues because that's how everyone was raised. No jealousy.

The Scandinavian attitude to sex is so much more adult and healthy than most other Western societies… the honest acceptance of the human body and mind as instruments of pleasure, rather than of shame, as in some repressed communities.

It is an attitude I am fully immersing myself in!

❤️

So this is what I know and please understand it goes against everything we are taught and indoctrinated with.

The bible is a collection of stories that was decided by a Caesar and some monks as to what would be included in this book. Think about it, there was no tv, radio, printing press just stories and tales passed down through the generations. In about 400AD a Caesar got together a bunch of monks to reproduce this book (pre printing press mass production).

Now lslam, Mohammad was a merchant living and working on the Euphrates (not sure if it’s the right river but it was a river😃). I think around 500AD the Quran was produced. It is extremely feasible that Mohammad the merchant managed to get his hands on this book and copy Moses and disappear for a while and come back with a set of rules. To me logic dictates that the Quran was heavily influenced by the stories in the Bible hence the similarities.

Islam was extremely forward thinking prior to the advent of the Quran, with no social media in those days to refute anything and people being simple with no education (reading) beliefs were easy to impose. Islam gave the world distillation 🤪
Sorry if I have offended anyone, it is not my purpose.

BTW, I love all the religious (pagan) holidays, Christmas, Easter, all Saints day and love everything that goes with them. But I am sceptical of the underlying reasons.

I absolutely agree on the feasibility. Muslims argue that he was illiterate, but I don't believe that. The influence is clear and they even count Jesus as a profet.

I think religion is the most successful cult of all time.
Basically yes, absolutely!

I celebrate most holidays happily. I'm an athee, but the traditions are mostly pagan anyway...

Found in Pompeii.
1st century AD

Hollow clay figures. Priapos, he was a exceptionally popular figure, these lamps are meant to hang on the walls.
- Imagine the effect, when the only light in a dark room.. Comes from the tip of this guy's penis!'
Interesting to know where the artist mind was when creating this. Pretty cook actually. Have some other thoughts lol, but won't post them. Would for sure make an interesting night light. :)

Disclaimer: I was brought up with a catholic father and an agnostic mother. Sooo, I did the whole catholic thing to confirmation, this is why I am gay 😂. I think religion is the most successful cult of all time.

Also, until the invention of printing press around 1436, books, including religious tracts, were hand written and not widely available. Additionally, with the exception of of the wealthy and educated, most people could not read. So most people got a biased and opinionated viewpoint of literature, including religious tracts through oral interpretation. The printing press was the opening salvo in a long struggle to bring literature and knowledge to the masses.

My first thought wasn't a lamp...but an incense burner

They truly do look like that!
But, they are oil lamps, some hang on the walls, others were meant to be portable..

Waking in the dark, Priapos hanging from the top of the lamp
post, the penis.. lighting my way...

Yup... I can see that working!

The Victorian age was not without Erotica despite theocracy driven prudishness. A few very sexually explicit books of the era: "The Pearl" - William Lazenby, "The Romance of Lust" - Anonymous, "The Recollections of a Maryanne" aka "Sins of the Cities of the Plains" - Anonymous, "Nunnery Tales" - Anonymous, "Venus in Furs" - Ritter Von Leopold Sacher-Masoch, "Autobiography of a Flea" - Anonymous, "The Lustful Turk" - Anonymous, "Miss Bellasis Birched for Thieving" - Anonymous, "The Whippingham Papers" - St. George Stock, and "Gynecocracy" - Viscount Ladywood(?) are just a few. Proof even in the most repressive times people find a way to get their kink on. Anyone interested in BDSM themes should check out some of this eras literature, it is still relevant and still very sensual and erotic.

Ohhh!!

I had not thought about including books to this collection, but yes!!!

- it is conspicuous though, how many of the authors that were "anonymous"
(Also, I suppose.. Some of the names were aliases)

But!! This is quite fascinating!!

Books—
Miniature erotic tomes.
I have to find the book that I scanned some time ago.

This one in particular from 1850. 2 1/2" x 2"
Once again featuring Priapus. :)

Ode à Priape

Aigle, baleine,
Dromadaire,
Insecte,
Animal, homme, tout
Dans les cieux,
Sous les eaux, sur la terre,
Tout nous annonce
Que l’on fout.
Le foutre tombe comme gréle,
Raisonnable on non,
Tout s’en mêle;

*****
Ode to Priapus

Eagle, whale,
Camel,
Bug,
animal, man, everything
In the skies,
Under water, on land,
Everything tells us
Who cares.
The cum falls like hail,
Reasonable or not,
Everything is mixed up;
