Haven’t been on for a while (my internet settings periodically will not allow Lit).

My daughter has never brought anybody home before but next week her girlfriend from England is flying in for a visit. In her usual snotty manner she complained about the state of the house so I have secretly purchased a new shower head, will paint the living room ceiling and am doing a half assed fix on the bathroom floor with stick on tiles. She knows nothing of this and I want to surprise her even if it kills me.

I’m a dad that wants a happy daughter…

That's a lovely thing to do. And I hope she appreciates your efforts. Don't take it personally. She just wants to impress her girlfriend - and the gf will probably love you how you are.

For Valentine’s Day they were going to have a virtual dinner date (daughter wanted Chick-Fil-A ). I got her a red rose and her girlfriend a red rose. I got some points on that one.
