2008 News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

In fact :D freddie :D I’m no longer in favor of abolishing the SURVIVOR contest. I still don’t like it or the concept behind it but it’s hard to ignore the fact that a large number of LITEROTICANS participate in it and must enjoy it to some degree.

Instead I’m now in favor of fixing it. Keeping the good while throwing out the bad.

Yes I know, many of you are already shaking your heads. “Change! Why change anything Mr. Scouries? We’ve always done it this way.”

Yes my reactionary friends, and for the last three years the contest has ended in charges of cheating and the hurling of recriminations.

Lets take a page out of our President-Elects book – Change Can Happen.

So change what? How?

Well guys and girls that’s up to you. You’ve got to decide what’s wrong with the present contest. What to keep and what to toss. What do you like about it and what do you hate. Talk about it among yourselves. Make some decisions. If you don’t it’ll just be more of the same old, same old next year. Which is getting tiresome for the rest of us…

From where I sit as an impartial observer here’s my take on the SURVIVOR contest: Too many rules and too complicated a scoring system.

KISS boys and girls – (keep it simple stupid)

My suggestion:

-Do away with the whole lottery/immunity business – why get points for not writing?
-Forget the poetry categories – invariably the results are awful
-Dump the illustrated stories – same reason
-Dump all the bonuses – they just complicate matters

Scoring:

- 1 point for every original stand alone story submitted
- You must enter a story in every category before you can enter a second 'point earning' story in any category
-Similarly you must have entered a second story in every category before you can enter a third 'point earning' one in any category (and so on)
- Most points win!

Rules:

- Stories must be original works and be accepted and posted at Literotica.
- Literotica reserves the right to change the category under which a submission is entered. However, once accepted and categorized this decision will not be revisited or be subject to second guessing.
-Cheaters will be shot

I’m james r scouries, and I approve this message…

Dolphins believe in change…

Yes, I accept your nomination for special moderator of the Survivor Contest only.

I realize, of course, you didn't actually write out the fact that you were nominating me, but I read between the lines and I accept. It was a brilliant idea on your part. Who better to monitor the Survivor Contest, other than the Ultimate Survivor.

Certainly, I know the rules better than anyone, as they have and still are used against me to disadvantage my story and in the advantage of another.

I, Freddie, Bostonfictionwriter, (hand over my heart) to monitor the contest to the best of my abilities. As special monitor, I shall have unique powers, which I shall not name, yet.

All in favor...

Don't suppose it ever occurred to you that Lauren's post was a heads up to everyone so we had enough time to make modifications to questionable stories before the deadline?

No, of course not.

Thank you, Starrkers. Considering we're still in the middle of November, one would think that would have crossed people's minds.

Does your mother know you talk like this? I'm deeply offended by your personal attack. Does Laurel know you attack her most prolific writer in this manner? Have you no respect for all the readers that I have delivered to this site with my entertaining stories? Look at Mr. or Miss Asswipe waiting in line to post.

I'm sorry Lauren but when a dog is kicked once, he figures he'll be kicked again and ducks at the first sign of your big shoe coming my way. Now, I've always respected your position and you, that is, until you attacked me, as you did above, in threads and in the forum boards in the past. No, I'm not stupid, I can read and I've read several of your hurtful posts about me in your threads and I shall not respond back to you in that manner.

I know you're out to get me. You were out to get me last year. What's changed? What is it that you don't like about me, Lauren? Is it because I'm from Boston? Is it because my name appears in Capital letters? Is it because I write too many stories? Is it because I have a penis and you hate penises and all those who have penises? What?

As far as I'm concerned the Survivor Contest should be about writing stories. Whoever writes the most stories and scores the most points wins. That's the contest. Only, for you to come along, as you did last year and as you intend to do this year, and make your warning post at the 11th hour threatening to delete stories and remove points that don't pass your muster.

Tell me, why not do your job during the year, update the scorecards weekly or even monthly instead of randomly every three or four months? Why not delete stories and remove points then instead of waiting until it is too late for the writer to act upon what contest rules you intend to enforce.

If my stories were accepted by Laurel and by Literotica, then they are accepted for the Survivor Contest. What stories must I change? Why must I change my stories? Am I psychic? Must I be psychic? Must I study the rules of the contest and reread all my already approved stories to determine which stories don't arbitrarily meet your definition as a contest entry. Give me a break. This is not a fair contest and you are one of the reasons why this contest is not fair.

I know when you mentioned chapter 41 you were referencing me. I'm not stupid. I know that my scorecard will be torn to shreds so that you can show everyone how powerful you are and how much you hate me. Knock yourself out. I've already won. This site is not about contests and about winning money. It's about writing stories and I've written the best stories that I know how before submitting them here.

Now, as far as I'm concerned, if I submit a story in good faith and if my story is accepted and not rejected, that should be the end of it. For you to go through my scorecard after my stories have been accept is not only unfair but contest fixing.

Do what you must Lauren to make yourself happy and to show all of your little friends how you took care of Bostonfictionwriter, it doesn't matter.

I'll still write my stories.

Thank you for posting to my thread. Perhaps, the next time you visit you could leave your foul attitude at the door and we could have a nice chat about how to improve the Survivor Contest. Only, all the suggestions that I made to make the contest fairer were rejected.

Considering the sheer volume of submissions the site owners have to go through each day, there's no way they can read every story to make sure the author put it in the correct category. Once in a blue moon they will change what the author designated but that is the exception not the rule. For the most part, they place the stories where the author says to put them, whether it's the correct category or not.

Part of our job as moderators is to make sure that all stories are properly categorized so points are given correctly and the contest remains fair to all participants. The topic of making sure your stories are in the correct category has been brought up repeatedly. This is not something that is being sprung at the 11th hour. The issue about the chapters that will not stand alone was also brought up months ago, so again, not an eleventh hour announcement.

We can only lay out the rules and guidelines and enforce them. We can't make any of you follow them when submitting stories, but we can take care of any story that doesn't meet the guideline before scoring is complete.

As a writer, I truly believe that all my chapters are stand alone chapters. Yet, admittedly, I'm biased. I wrote the story. Writing is after all arbitrary. Yet, for the moderators on this site to deem a chapter not stand alone and delete that chapter and points is one thing, but then to delete and remove all the subsequent chapters that appear after the deleted chapter is stating now that all the rest of the chapters don't make any sense, it ludicrous.

I've already stated that beginning of the contest, you are free to post any and all of my stories wherever you feel they should be posted. Delete whichever ones you want. Post the rest all under non-erotic. I don't care. The personal goal of Lauren is to leave my scorecard with the least amount of points. Whatever.

I'm too busy to waste any more of my time and energy with this. I posted what I needed to say. I have stories to write.

As a mere writer, I have no control over what stories you deem are stand alone and what stories are accepted. I just write them in good faith and submit them. My job is done. You do what you must.

Only, tell Lauren to bite her tongue before she disrespects me again here and on any other thread.

All on a VOLUNTEER basis, I might add. It's a damned lot of work. I can't even imagine. So kudos to the volunteer moderators.

And THANK YOU for reminding us of the rules. I overlooked the "two stories for every immunity" thing... Oops. So it's definitely a HELP not a hindrance, for most of us... ya know... those of us who actually...

oh nevermind...

BFW: If you truly believe your chapters are stand-alone and in the correct category, why are you making such a fuss? If they truly are stand-alone, nothing will change, they will stay where they are.
Could it be that you know they are neither stand-alone nor correctly categorised and are blowing an enormous smokescreen in an attempt to hide the fact?

It's been a long time since I posted, either here or a story; I've been dealing with my kids, my unstable ex-husband, budget cuts at the school district where I work, and some pretty serious health issues. It's good to see nothing's changed on this thread... well, maybe not so good.

Hope everyone's doing well with their stories and their lives in general. I've got a couple of nearly-finished stories waiting for me to finish them, and a few other ideas in the pipeline; I haven't given up on the contest yet. (No worries, for anyone who worries about such things, I won't have enough to suddenly blanket the site with last-minute Survivor entries.)

Good luck to all, Happy Thanksgiving to the other U.S.'ers, and Happy Holiday season to everyone to whom it applies :)

Thanks, Erin. Health-wise, I'm in the pincushion phase, where they keep taking blood to test to try to find out what's going on. So far they know four or five things that it isn't, but not what it is. Hope all is well with you.

I submitted a story Saturday, finally. :)

Not too long ago I withdrew from the Survivor Contest yet I've kept browsing over here to read and see how everyone is fairing. Good luck to all and thanks to the Crimson and Lauren for all they do and still doing it after all they have to put up with.

Magic?

On the 7th day of.... no, no

7 days after submitting a story, I noticed it's GONE. No longer pending, not APPROVED, just gone - magic.

Any ideas what happened? I guess I'll resubmit after I finish my turkey sorbet.

The site had a major case of indigestion a day or so ago. There's a good chance that in re-upping everything that went haywire, your story somehow slipped through the cracks before the glue set.

Just wanted to tell everyone that I finally got to the climax (no not 'that' climax) of my novel. I had the end in mind back in February but it seriously took me 60000 words to finally get to this point. The end is in sight :)

Below is in answer to the three nasty comments that you left to my stories.

I'm so sorry that I've made you feel ashamed and stupid, Erin. If you weren't so dumb, you'd realize that you lowered the standards of this site when you wrote your first 750-1,000 word story and continued to write 200 more of them. I see you are up to your old habit of bashing my stories and giving me zeroes. I hope you instill better manners in your child than how your parents have taught you. I've never bothered you, yet you still cannot refrain from attacking me and my writing. You have some serious emotional issues to resolve. I hope you will find someone who can help with your mental illness. There is medication that you can take. If you have already been prescribed medication, you really shouldn't stop taking your pills without first seeing your doctor. Take care, Erin. I wish you all the best in finding a cure for your lunacy. Have a nice holiday and thank you for taking the time to vote for my story and showing everyone how crazy you truly are.

You really need to leave me alone, Erin. Please stop leaving nasty comments on my stories. I don't read your stories. I don't vote for your stories. I don't leave comments on your stories. Yet, there you are at every turn sending me e-mails, sending me PM's, and leaving nasty comments to my stories with a zero vote.

What is wrong with you? Then, you cry on the forum boards to all your little friends. What comes around, Honey, goes around in this world and you will get what you give.

I'm here to write stories. I don't know why you are here. Just stop stalking me. Go bother someone else.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday. Please get professional help. Everyone deserves to live a normal life, even you.

Hi all -

- I resubmitted my Subway Slut and it was rejected - TWICE. Oh well. My muse gave me two new seminal images, so I wrote two new stories finally.

Does anyone have a trick to sort an author's stories by date? I've wanted to click
on the DATE field sooooooooo many times.

I was beginning to wonder when we'd see another post from Freddie. I think he's actually just copying and pasting his own posts now to save time typing.

Did you get a reason for your rejection?

Unfortunately, I don't think you can sort an author's stories by date. :(

Yup - the 1st was for more than 30 continuous chars on 1 line. I found them and fixed it. Sticking with my original font would have avoided the problem too.

The second was for 'violence/snuff/degradation'. There is no snuff; the actual violence is less than in other published stories and the degradation is essential to the resolution. :(

If ONLY this were an adult site with a warning in the story for the squeemish.... oh wait....

There is a long way to sort stories. You basically highlight the whole list of stories, including category, description, and date, and past it into a Word Document. Depending on how many stories it is (when I did it for my stories it took about 2 minutes) it will show up in a chart and then you can just sort like you would for any Word Document.

I actually plan to do this and sort by category to make sure that all my stories are in the categories I think they are in. I'm worried I might have missed a story or two.

Lit - I'm sorry your story keeps getting rejected. My story "The Hell Club" was rejected twice as well and I had to tone it down a lot. Not sure if doing that for your story would ruin the flow of the story.

I don't use any MS crap I don't have to, so I'll try it in Wordperfect. Thanks for the tip.

Looks like you scored in NAMO......congrats. Taxes, plumbing and other minutia kept me away. :(:(
