2013: The Altered (IC)

Penny looked blankly at the man's hand for a few seconds, he seemed friendly enough, it didn't look like he had any weapons on him, at least none that could be reached any time soon. She kept staring at the hand, what was it people were supposed to do in this situation again, Shake the hand! She cursed inwardly at herself for forgetting about that; reaching out she took the proffered hand and shook it firmly, if a bit inexpertly.

"My name's Om- Penny, my name's Penny, just Penny." She smiled awkwardly as she tried to put the man at ease, although he seemed fairly at ease anyway, but if she didn't seem like a threat then she fitted in.

"I am sorry for taking you away from where you were, but it is not far back to the social commune," She turned and orientated herself, pointing in the direction of the diner, "It is only a few blocks back that way, I thought however that the girl would not survive the trip. I hope she is ok, I tried to help.".

He spoke "Penny, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance" shaking her hand. Her handshake was stiff as if she was unaccustomed to shaking hands. That in and of itself wasn't odd but still there were other things, little things like when she introduced herself. Starting to say one name then changing it to another. Then there was her vibe when their hands clasped, she had a nervious vibe, almost fearful vibe to her energy. Small things he learned to pay attention to over time.

"Penny, an act of kindness never needs an apology. You probably saved that girls life by bringing us here so quickly, with or without our permisson. Your a hero." He tried to reassure her with a smile. "If your not in a hurry would you like to come into the clinic to see if theres any news on the young girl you brought here?" Adding " I want to find that waitress too, she seems to have vanished in the commotion. I want to say thanks for her help and make sure she get's back to the diner ok."

Dr. Patell

Dr.Patell was in exam room Two attending to a child. He was nearly finsihed, the child had a sore throat and a slight fever. Easy cured with a script for some anti-biotics and bed rest he thought when he herd the voices of nurses and staff whiz by with a girney. Turning he spoke to the childs parent "excuse me for a minute ma'm this looks like an emergency. I'll be right back."

Leaving the exam room he followed the wake of the girney to the emergency operating room. The staff already started to work on the young woman, cutting away clothing, taking her blood pressure ect. "Dr.Patell, the patient has 2 gunshot wounds and a head injury. Lots of blood loss." An Rn said from the otherside of the girney.

Dr.Patell quicky examined the gunshot wound in the shoulder then the one in the abdomin."She's lost alot of blood, get a type, start an IV w 30cc of toxalyne, fast drip. Get that portable Xray unit in here stat. we need to find out how much damage the bullet caused." Turning he spoke to the closest nurse "prep the surgery unit and page Surgeon Kendall please".

The staff scurried around in what can only be described as controlled chaos. DR.Patell went back to exam room two. Removing his gloves and throwing them in the trash can. He spoke softly to the child as he removed a prescription pad from his pocket and began to write.

"Sally, you have a slight cold but this will make you feel better in 2 or 3 days." He handed the script to her mother saying "make sure she stays in bed for 3 days. Finish all the pills and drink plenty of water. She can go back to school in 3 days." Smiling he patted the young girl on the head and left the exam room heading for the emergency room where life and death was about to put on a play.

Lights and images floated by her as reality and imagination collided. A some points she was lost in a dark cave. No light shone upon the place yet she could see plain as day "Hello???" called Amp quietly half hoping not to get an answer. As the moments past the hair on her neck stood up as a voice called back "Come to me.... come home...." Gripped with fear she trys to run but is rooted to the spot. "w....who are y.....you?" she studdered still frozen to the spot.

Suddenly lights flashed over head as she became aware of seeing pains in her stomach and shoulder on a crash cart. Frantically she trys to get up tugging on the Drip attached to her arm. "Let me GO!" then a needle pricked her shoulder and slowly she slipped back into her cave. "Come to me Amp" slowly she raised her fists and kosta pulled a knife slowly.

Liesl Hawthorne

Liesl barely remembered exactly how she has managed to end up infront of the clinic but that didn't matter. She stood in the hall, a normal looking woman....in only a bra covered in blood. She had her arms clasped over her chest ignoring everyone who was staring, lost in thought she watched as they took the unknown woman and began trying to save her life. Finally a male nurse offered her a hospital scrub top and she accepted pulling in over her head.

She glanced back at the ER doors just as the man and the other unknown woman were coming through. She nodded to them and turned her attention back to the double doors. She couldn't see through them but she couldn't take her eyes off of them either. After a moment she turned to the woman, "Thank you, she might make it because of your ability." Liesl then looked up at the man, "And thank you as well."

She still had her arms crossed over her chest, the blood was finally dried though but Liesl didn't care for the way it felt on her skin. Shaking her head, trying to clear her thoughts, Liesl wasn't normally this spacey, what was going on?

Penny looked around the freshly scrubbed hallway of the clinic, medical staff running back and forth as they went about their tasks; this place reminded her of the lab where she had been kept, an frown crept across her faces as a doctor walked past, an image of another man in a white coat flashed in her mind, with their needles, needles that made the world hazy and overwhelming, it was always followed by those light. Shaking her head to drive the memories out she looked to the woman who had also been trying to help, though with now the normal amount of arms, wearing a pair of new scrubs to cover her.

"Thank you, she might make it because of your ability, and thank you too." Penny stammered, as the woman spoke to her, she got uncomfortable around women, they were so....so....and that's where Penny's social expertise ran dry, she hadn't ever had a chance to explore sexual feelings, but to her, women were....good.

"Th-thank you, I...was just trying to help. You don't look well, do you need someone to help you, we are in the right place. Luckily this clinic isn't too far from where I took you, otherwise I would not have been able to bring us all here without....damage." This was something that she had been made to learn the hard, expending all her energy in a jump was bad, but if pushed even harder then body cells would start to be damaged, she would sometimes be bruised, become aenemic or worse. She glanced down at her feet, lost for anything to say next, try to act normal, what would a normal person; perhaps introductions.

"My name is Penny, this man says his name is Hanzo to his friends, I would like to shake your hand." She said the words like reading from a script only she could see and then held out a hand.

Hanzo Akagi

"Dorethy, I mean penny..." He looked at Penny grinning, then back to the other woman "is correct, I'm Hanzo Akagi at your service." He made a slight bowing gesture with his head. "If I'm not mistaken, I herd the doctor guy back at the diner call you Lisel?...Pleased to make your acquaintence." Hanzo was always polite and civilized if nothing else.

Lisel Nodded, half smiled seeming out of sorts. "You don't look to well, Your first time teleporting? ...It messed with me too for a bit. Why don't You two sit down and I'll try and find out something about our mystery womans condition."

He walked over to the reception area and began speaking with the woman behind the desk

Dr.Patell

Dr.Patell walked over to the surgical unit, it was small but adequate for minor surgeries. He stopped outside the operating room and examined the Xray's that were already up on the board. The head trauma seemed minimal, stiches were required, no cranial fractures.. she was lucky. The shoulder Xray showed a FMJ bullet intact near the scapula, an easy removal for a resident surgeon but posed no danger to life now that the bleeding was stopped.

He flipped on the light for the 3rd xray studying it closely. This was a problem. He saw fragments in several places, not a big problem. Fortunitly the bullet failed to disintergrate completely. The real problem was the tissue damage and risk of infection..septiss. There was damage to the liver, stomach and upper intestine.

Turning he yelled to the nearest staff person " Nurse , where's Dr. Kendall?" The woman came over " He's on his way but it will be another 30 min before he arrives Dr. Patell." he looked back into the operating room " she doesn't have 30 minutes. I'll have to start and Dr. Kendall can scrub in and take over when he arrives. Get me some scrubs and call the anesthesiologist."

Langdon Caul

Langdon had watched the four disappear just like everyone else had, he stood there speechless. Rubbing his ribs again he walked over to the crash scene and looked at the ground, there was blood splatter where the woman had crawled and passed out, there were kneeling marks where Liesl had dropped to the young woman's side. No trace of where they went or how they had managed to leave. He scratched his head, whoever had the ability to just evaporate into thin air had stumped him. It was an impressive feat, he just hoped that wherever they had gone was safe place.

He looked over at the others from the Diner who were just as shocked, especially the two friends of the dark hair waitress Liesl. He then examined the car, eying the bullet holes and glanced around the area. Whoever had shot at the woman was long gone, Langdon had a good eye and he couldn't spot anyone lurking that hadn't already been in the Diner. A stabbing pain made him wince so he turned and ignored his natural instincts that had made him a good cop. It didn't matter anymore, he left that life behind him.

He turned to the red headed woman who he assumed was the owner, "Excuse me, would you happen to have a first aid kit? And maybe a space where I can privately tend to some wounds?"

Liesl Hawthorne

Liesl smiled a rare bright smile at Penny, "Which hand you want to shake sugar?"

Nodding to Hanzo she added, "I think it did mess with me a bit, I'm not usually so scattered. I need to use the phone to call the Diner so everyone knows we are alright."

Liesl walked with Penny over to the waiting area and kept her eyes on the woman while she used the pay phone. After about the fifth ring Barney answered the phone, "Bean there coffee n dine...whatcha need?" His voice was gruff, like sand paper but it didn't sway Liesl any.

"Hey it's Liesl, let Cat know that we are at the clinc. The crash victim is in surgery now, I didn't want her worrying about me too much. I could use a change of clothes though...maybe some soap so I can clean up."

"Gotcha babe, anything else?"

"yeah, tell Cat to bring some food for my new friend here, she looks like she could use it." Liesl clicked the phone down and sat beside Penny. They sat silently for awhile before Liesl couldn't stand the silence, she turned to the woman, "Penny....you're new around here huh?"

Hanzo Akagi

As Hanzo approached the reception desk he took a good look around. There were faces young & old all here for the same reason sickness. Some looked like they had seen better days others had the look of desperation in their eyes. He reflected on the sad state of the world saying to himself as he arrived at the desk " So this is what the world has come to."

"May I help you?" Those words woke him out of his reflection. "yes you can....." He looked down at the womans name tag "...Kate. A young woman was brought in here on a girney 15 or 20 minutes ago. Can you tell me anything?"

The woman behind the desk made a frown and seemed annoyed. In a way he could understand her frustration, she must hear that question a hundred times a day. "what's her name?" He didn't know " I don't know she is a total stranger, we didn't have time to check her ID she was bleeding allover the street." Again the frown. "Were not allowed to give out any information on patients, except to immediate members of the family."

"you can tell me, I'm her brother" He said.
" No Your not, you just said she was a stranger." The receptionist replied.
"I never understood her so she's like a stranger to me." replied Hanzo.
" Your such a liar" Said the receptionsit
" Ok, you got me. I was lying then but I'm not now. She's my number 1 soul sister." He grinned. She was having none of it.

Hanzo took a calming breath, dealing with rules and red tape always frustrated him. He began to do a slow burn when he took a different tack. He placed both hands on the counter, leaning over it looking into her eyes saying "Luke,.. I am your father." The woman Looked at him oddly not understanding..then burst out giggling.

As she regained her composure, finally giving in she said " Ok..Ok..I'll make a call and find out what I can... You silly man." Hanzo tilted his head ever so slightly and smiled, he could be charming, funny or both when he wanted to be. "Thank you." He wandered away a few steps while the woman picked up the telephone and dialed an extention. As he walked around people close enough to have herd his conversation with the receptionist stared at him. He wondered if they had stopped careing or just hadn't herd laughter in a long, long time.

Chris DaFoe

Chris took in the events as they happened, well it didn't seem like he'll be getting answers any time soon and he wasn't particularly interested in hearing what the priest wanted to ramble about next. Also the amount of people showing up was starting to make him nervous and twitchy. Too many powers to watch out for and that shotgun could do a lot more damage before Chris can react also the waitress he asked the information from had disappeared, maybe he should just come back tomorrow...yeah that sounded like a plan.

Chris stepped away from the counter and casually strolled out of the front door, he looked over at the crashed vehicle and decided that other people can worry about it, he was tired of working for charity. Whistling 'Bad moon rising' he walked down the street, looking for a shop to buy shaving cream

Some time later Amp found her self starring up at a white ceiling tears rolling down her cheeks listening as the hospital bustled with worries and problems constantly. Her whole body ached from the days events she didn't know what hurt from what the surgery the shooting it was all a blur as she began to become more aware of her surroundings the emptiness of the room pressed in on her. *how had she got here... hoe long have i been out...* she thought to herself tears still dripping onto the sheets she relaxed her head hitting the pillow again she allowed herself to cry.

Some time later she gained her composure and sat back up. Gripping the IV drip she lifted her self out of bed the action causing the bandages on her stomach to darken with red slightly. Slowly and quietly she shuffled out into the hall hoping to make an escape.

Penny (Omega)

"yeah, tell Cat to bring some food for my new friend here, she looks like she could use it." Liesl said into the phone. Did she mean me?. "Penny....you're new around here, huh?" Penny looked around the clinic, well sure, she had never been to this clinic. It seemed an odd thing to enquire, but perhaps it was the custom when you're meeting someone you don't know.

"Yes, I am new, I've never been into this clinic before. Actually this whole area is new to me, I'm from...." She paused, she couldn't tell her where she was really from, a lab, but she had to say something. "Up north." That was partly true atleast. She turned to look at the attractive woman again, she was definitely having an effect on Penny, though Penny didn't know what that effect was but she wanted it to keep on happening, even through the blood that had dried on her.

"I'm sorry if jumping made you feel ill. I've only ever had people join me a couple of times, it doesn't affect me the same way though so I forgot that it could make you feel that way. Sea sickness they said, that's what it felt like." She lulled back into silence, turning to look at her feet. Why do I suddenly feel the compulsion to look at my feet? I've never been very interested in them before. You're a killer, you stare at people until their eyes water and they look away, not the other way round. But this woman wasn't staring at her, or being aggressive and yet Penny still felt out of odds.

"How did you become different?" She blurted out, unable to keep looking at her feet any longer.

Hanzo Akagi

Hanzo had paced by the reception desk evenually sitting down as the receptionist could find no information other than the woman was in surgery. He looked back at his two companions and saw they were talking so he stayed where he was.

A little more than an hour later the receptionist motioned to him to come over. When he arrived she smiled saying " Your sister"...came out of surgery and will be fine. They took her to a recovery room but will be transferring her to westside hospital tomorrow if her signs are stable.

"Kate, your a doll." He winked and gave her a big smile, which caused the receptionist to blush. Turning, He walked towards his companions to tell them the good news. He began to whistle his favorite tune from the wizard of Oz.

Strangers passed her by as if she wasn't there. "Did you see that freak what got shot? I don't know why we help them..." Said a passing nurse as rage swelled in amp she stumbled on holding to the IV for support she slowly made her way down each corridor.

The blood keep leaking from her Post-Op stomach she winced feeling the wrap softly she ducked into a side room. The patient inside was badly burned and moaning. *wont mind if i take more wraps from here any way....* she thought snatching the bundle she slipped back into the hall stumbling as fast as she can.

Turning the corner to the lobby she saw several people all in a circle. She didn't recognize them but she knew some one had to have helped her and then seamed familiar.

Liesl Hawthorne

Liesl smiled warmly at Penny, "Pretty much the same way everyone else did, the poison cocktail the government decided to put in our water. I was only sick for about a week...it,uh...was a bad time. But I got better and then one day I was carrying some groceries to the apartment I had been living in. I dropped my keys because my hands were so full but I caught them just as quick as they slipped from my hand. The thing is, I caught them with a arm I never had before because I was still holding my groceries. I freaked, but I got over it, now it just seems natural and it helps to have a extra hand when you work at the Bean."

She glanced around, "I don't usually talk about it, I lost some love ones when the sickness hit. I got a brother though, and a sister...both are altered." Liesl, glanced over at Hanzo, he seemed to be sweet talking the information desk lady. Glancing at the clock she frowned, Cat should have been here or sent someone here by now. Maybe she should make another call.....

Penny (Omega)

Penny listened intently as Liesl told her about how she was made different, although she used another word for it, Altered; she gave the word deference. Briefly she wondered what it must have been like not to be Altered to be a normal human being, what it must have been like to have once been normal and to now be Altered. To Penny, trying to comprehend that was like an animal trying to comprehend a computer, it was unfathomable, she had always been Altered, it was much as she despised it her reason for being alive, for that was her normal state of being.

Liesl seemed to be sad as she talked about losing people, she mentioned her family, another thing that Penny had never had; being grown in a tank she had no parents or siblings. That's not strictly speaking true, is it Penny? There is...Alpha. It seemed like such a long time since she had last seen that face, it was a face that she hoped never to see again. Penny suddenly became aware that Liesl had stopped talking and was staring intently at the clock hanging above the entrace doors, couldn't she tell the time, perhaps she needed glasses? No, she isn't squinting; perhaps she is expecting someone to show up at a specified time, that was probably right.

"Are you waiting for someone Liesl? Would you like me to take you back to your workplace?" As she looked over at her she gazed over her shoulder and saw the girl that they were trying to help standing in the doorway, blood leaking through the hospital gown she now wore.

"Strange customs, I thought patients were not allowed after a surgery" Penny mused allowed, although perhaps it was different here or maybe it was too crowded, do not draw too much attention to your ignorance or you will not fit in.
