30 Poems in 30 Days (Redux)

7-30

Free falling

everything ends
that’s what they say
but they’ve never met
my determination
cornered in a dark room
or my inexhaustible need
to be closer to you

they’ll never know
the ends of my mind
I travel daily
on a road that goes on forever
or my undying desire
to feel your lips on mine

someone should argue with them
everything doesn’t end
some things do
but love once it sinks in
will never find a stopping point
which is what makes it
so scary and wonderful
so sacred and exhilarating
so painful and perfect
so everlasting and unforgettable

8-1

The morning after

Feeling drained
A bottle of champagne
Left empty in the watery ice bucket.
A playbill open
Another token
Of the nightmare’s saunter through.
Nothing is lost
Wipe away the dust
And crack the windows,
Will ya?

1
who am I kidding- ha

The season shifts again
It always happens when
I think of your darkness
There is nothing new
Too few are the ones
From a past passage
Melancholic like a scent
Floating past
Some ghosts are
Always there,
All times of the year
Hiding in the walls
Silent
I will try to keep it up
Without you,
Doubt me because I do

8-2

Rerun

Out of breath
Pounding feet
Dreams of being closer
Running through my mind
As trees fly by
Whispers of
You and I
Thoughts of pressed
Kisses between words
Felt in silences
Separating footfalls

2
Last night
I could smell you
In the room
Little lost clues
Of your existence

Hiding my face
In your hair’s softness
The warmth
Buried in
A black sanctuary

Days pass and I
Remember you
On each one
Praying to something
That you forgive me

8-3

True

You changed everything
With that first kiss
In a hallway
That will always be ours

With that first kiss
A light dawned
Inside and out
A glittering brightness

In a hallway
Where I came undone
And was remade
All at once

That will always be ours
These moments shared
Melting together
With each touch since

You changed everything

3
Creeping in
Like a skinwalker
The sunlight fades
And you appear
Like a glowing ember
Burning through the
Fabric of my soul

8-4

Unpredictable

Who actually knows
How their ending comes -
With age?
With illness?
With broken hearts?

8-5

Years

a few thousand moments
spent dreaming of -
flying away with you -
wondering when the next
jump and fall
into you
would happen

my trust written in the rain
sparkling in your kiss
jumpstarting my heart
as we lift off
soaring above everything -
the floating memories
of your arms holding me

5
tonight I told someone
A dream from
Years ago, except then
Your scent permeated
My mind while
I fought to sleep
I haven’t dreamt that one
Since the time i
Told it to you,
Except when I’m awake

7
Mosquitos and gnats
Try to pester me
On my back in
The dead meadow
Like clouds,
Too high to care
In and out of
Daydreams and
Nods, wanting to
Dream something new
Letting the itch tickle
Through me, on my
Skin & within
Subcutaneous you
Thinking about
Connections, then
Realizing they are
Less than invisible
But your words
Keep me around,
I know there’s not
A string

8-7

Lay me down

Pillow
soft touch
fingertips bright
No shadows written
on your face tonight

Smile
fervent kiss
no layers between
Bodies intertwined
under covers unseen

8-9

Even apart
I feel you
In the breeze on my neck
In the warmth of your shirt
That no longer smells like you
But sometimes I pretend it does
And take a deep breath through it
Just to feel you
Closer
Than 90 miles away
Where you are
Without me
Because every day we choose
And every day you’re more
Than I’ll ever be
Which I have learned
And accept
And know
And still keep you
As close
As if you were here
Laying next to me
As I resting my head on a pillow
And taking a deep breath
Through your shirt

8-10

Career

You told me we had time
Last night
This morning
So I waited
Prepared
But then it was stolen
By that third party
Your special relationship
Unknown to me
But so familiar to you
That her flavor is your preferred
blend of depth
and complexity
and need
That I hold no candle
never will
To what she does
How she captivates
You

2
My words are slight
Always more to say
But why
Go on
Ego doesn’t care
The days cool
The sun keeps risin’
While the fool
Keeps fantasizing

8-11

Weight

Every word
Sentence read
Is hitting hard
Substantial
The building falling
Down upon us
Pinning us down
Pressing us thinner

With each phrase
All that’s left
Is a wafer cut
Of what used to be
Anthologies

3
A bright crescent moon
Smiles down white
As a toothpaste commercial
Organisms squirm
Inside the cold dirt
Curling together for warmth
I embrace autumn
But forsee a brutal winter
Freezing time and love
Like every winter since

8-12

Reasons

The music is playing
Exit stage left
Let yourself be carried away
By the touch
By the look
By the need
But don’t listen too hard
When they tell you
They will be all yours
When they tell you
You’re only for now and not forever
Don’t focus on their words
When they say
You’re not their everything
The way they were yours
Don’t flip the script
And think you have enough
Enough need
Enough want
Enough love
All those four-letter words
For you both

Because the truth is
That even if you’re broken
You’re going to live through it
Through the pain
And the tears
And the darkness
When you rend your body
Hoping you find your pieces again
When dust clears
And your heart stops beating
Only for them.

4
One wakes when
The other sleeps
Thousands of miles
Yet right there, together
Waiting for the other
To materialize
Seeing things in
Wood grain or clouds
Hidden pictures all around
Signaling the existence
Out there, somewhere
Of the other half of me
