Day 15: A holiday/winter movie from the 1940's

I’m picking the same movie because I’d typed the below out last night then decided to wait until the challenge was announced 🀣

My older sister loves this movie and used to watch it whenever it was on when I was a kid.

Honestly I’m sorta torn between Cary Grant and Denzel Washington as the better lead. But I love my sister so I’ll give this one the edge.

Day 14: A holiday film with either a Prince, Princess, King or Queen.

The Little Princess
(1939)

My favorite Shirley Temple movie. Maybe not a "traditional" holiday movie, but Christmas does take place, and I watch it during the holidays. (Also, she isn't an actual Princess... lol.)This is the full movie on YouTube.

The Shop Around The Corner is about love but it's also about hope, or that's how I took it. The hope that first impressions aren't always right, that most people are basically good, and that finding love isn't impossible even if you do a lot to get in your own way.

Slick...sneaking Shirley Temple in there

Day 15: A holiday/winter movie from the 1940's

I am not a John Wayne fan. I have reasons that have nothing to do with his acting, but I also don't like his acting style. That said, this is a solid film, and I like it. Wayne, Harry Carey Jr., and Pedro ArmendΓ‘riz play three cattle rustlers and bank robbers in the old West. After a heist gone wrong, fleeing a posse through a sand storm, the trio find a covered wagon with a woman in labor. They help deliver the baby, and the dying mother, who names the boy after his three benefactors, makes them promise to take care of him as the baby's godfathers. In a retelling of the Three Magi, trying to complete this task is their path of redemption.

In John Ford's capable hands, it is beautifully shot, and the story is punctuated by a solid script and a good sense of humor in a sentimental tale of bad men gone good.

3 Godfathers (1948)

(+1 for "redemption," for a total of 1)

Yeah. Not a fan of Wayne either. Probably for the same reasons. Might check out this movie though.

Day 16: A holiday/winter movie from the 1950's
A film of love and faith, and very much about redemption.
Any movie about clergy or social workers who commit to the people they serve at the neglect of their families hits home for me.

Day 16: A holiday/winter movie from the 1950's

In a film studies class, we watched БнСгу́рочка ("The Snow Maiden"), a Russian film that was live-translated by some students from the Russian language class (It was a lot of fun. And there was this girl...). This is a beautifully animated Russian tale of Snegurochka, the daughter of Spring and Ded Moroz, the Russian version of Santa. Ded Moroz and Spring are heading north, but Snegurochka, now a young woman, wants to stay and learn about mortals. She stays with a human family, and comes to understand mortals better, but doesn't understand love. Highjinks ensue, as they often do. Eventually Mizger, a local man, falls in love with her, and she wants to return the emotion, but cannot. Her mother, hearing her pain, comes to her and gives her the ability to love. Yay! True love wins, right?

Fuck no. This is Russia.

Her heart, made of ice, melts under the warmth of love and she vanishes. Mizger, his own heart broken, throws himself off a cliff to his death. But the god of the Sun, who was mad at the kingdom for some reason, is happy at the sacrifices, and won't be mean to them anymore. The villagers sing, since they all found someone more miserable than they. So...yay?

Yes, it has a sad Russian ending, but it is beautifully made, and the music is from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera, and it is lovely, even if it is opera. I am calling it "love," for the theme of the movie, but also because it gave me a chance to talk to the hot girl from the Russian class who melted my own snowy heart...

All I could find was the whole movie (it is in the public domain, and you can find it online), but this gives an idea of the animation.

The Snow Queen is without a doubt a tale of magic. Haven't watched it in a very long time but I think I will rewatch since it's available. There's also an English version on YouTube for the subtitle haters.

If you read about all the behind the scenes things that were happening, Im surprised it was made. I'm glad it was. It's gorgeous and the music is classic. It tells the story of young love.

Pluto's Christmas Tree
(1952)

For me, this counts, even though it is only 6:45. It is pure joy. And this is the whole feature in it's entirety, but you have to watch it on the YouTube app.

Meet Me In St. Louis is one of my favorite films, not just Christmas films.

Day 17: A holiday/winter movie from the 1960's
Now we're getting into some of the animation classics that we all know and love. Is there hope, joy, redemption, and love in this movie? Absolutely! But when it comes to faith, I've heard a lot of scripture recitations in my day and nothing comes close to Linus's recitation of the introduction to the nativity from Luke. 10/10. Perfect.
